Hey all, I have been hearing people needing C++ programmers ans such, so If you want to create a fun chatroom, rpg, action/sidscroll and such, im available. I have been studying this and its quite better than rpg maker 2k. You can program (like I have) a IPX, TCP/IP, Modem2Modem connections for numerous games. So just give a reply and tell me what you wanna do.

I just spent a little while looking over the Game Maker site and it looks quite nice. It's definitely better suited to action games than BYOND. On the other hand, it's largely event-driven, which isn't my cup of tea -- though there is a scripting language that looks pretty robust, although not nearly as nice as DM, at least at first glance. It seems to do networking, too, though I get the feeling it takes a lot more setup than BYOND's implicit handling.
In fact, it looks good enough that, had I discovered it before BYOND, I might never have thought to look further. I wonder how many potential BYOND programmers have done just that. |

But it did not have much support for networking at the time. Then I stumbled upon BYOND at mudconnector.com, and preferred the OOP style of DM and have been quite happy with what I see (now I just got to find time to put it to use!). I have looked at DarkBASIC and 3D-RAD recently - both are not bad languages for creating Quake2-like 3D worlds... |

MMmmmMM.... Yes, I'v been looking at game maker for quite a while now, havn't yet decided to work fully on a game yet, because I can't quite get the functions correct. I myself think its a step up from BYOND though, when I saw it like a year ago when I was looking for something that could help me support online games, this program didn't have that kind of support so far, so I just left it alone. Now I'm seeing it getting posted a lot and have been glancing at it every now and then.

Wow, that is pretty impressive, though I wonder how well it handles large scale multiplayer games. The ones on the site seem to only support two players at the most.
I like that it can incorporate external DLLs and can be compiled into a stand alone executable (thought that also makes them vulnerable to viruses.) *grin* I also noticed that none of the tank games had independant turret movement. ;) |

A link to this would be nice... How about: http://www.cs.uu.nl/people/markov/gmaker/index.html - official site, http://gm.timpiper.co.uk/ - a community support site for GM, http://pub39.ezboard.com/bgamemakergamesdirectory - games directory, and each of these sites has tons of links to fan/developer websites... a very strong community... But I still prefer DM-style OOP to GM's scripting... but admittedly I thinks the games that people have made with GM outshine DM at this point... (they even have a 3D engine) but it shouldn't remain that way for long.... |

(they even have a 3D engine) but it shouldn't remain that way for long.... That depends on if you're going for graphics or gameplay. I gagged when I played most of those games, simply because the designers had no concept of what was fun -- in most of the cases, it was either just mindless twitch-gaming, or something akin to torture in difficulty. Sure, the graphics were nice (even games with Windows-Paint-ish graphics had their own feel to them), but that's all I could really find good about it. I'm talking about the ones that got good reviews, even, like MatrixMan and stuff like that. Yes, I'll definitely admit that I'm biased for BYOND and DM. Game Maker fills its niches, but it doesn't fill mine. =) (One other thing I noticed about it is that it is oriented almost entirely at action games and racing games. RPGs and strategy games would be very difficult in there; any level of depth would turn even the most well-designed game into a tangled mess.) |

But I still prefer DM-style OOP to GM's scripting... but admittedly I thinks the games that people have made with GM outshine DM at this point... Graphically yes, some GM games outshine the most of the current BYOND games. I didn't see a lot of content in the games I tried though. I still haven't seen any GM games for more than 2 players either. Lagrange, one that had high recommendations, could easily be duplicated in BYOND with many more players. For building 1 or two player action games that are dependant on high frame rates, I might recommend GM. For building worlds, I'll stick with BYOND. (they even have a 3D engine) I saw nothing about a real 3D engine, only a psuedo-3D game. Do you have more details? Of course, all of my opinions are based on a few hours of browsing the site and manual. It looks good, but it's no BYOND. |
