Hey, I am trying to update a computer from windows 95 to windows 98, but when I insert the cd it goes through some stuff. Then it shows a message, "Your computer already has a operating system installed which cannot be upgraded by this version of setup, you need to obtain the windows 98 upgrade."
So anyone know where to get this file, or I'd rather just know how to format(delete EVERYTHING from the computer). Thanx for any information.
P.S. I know this has nothing to do with BYOND(acually it will later). But I am trying to setup a network, and will test my game on my network with a couple of my friends.

alright, I was just hoping you would have to type format in dos or something :), but I have a friend who can help I just couldnt get a hold of him today and was hoping I could do it without much help. Thanx for stating that though.

It's pretty sticky stuff. Luckily, my brother's doing ours pretty soon ;) =V | |
Actually, there are just two files you have to delete to fool Win 98 into thinking you can install. The problem is, I forget which two files those are. You can find them on the net with a clever search engine query. I found dozens of sites when I was looking for it.

Most computers come with a CD for formatting your hard drive to restart, this is very simple to use so check to see if you have 1.

You should never EVER EVER update any version of Windows. EVER. Firstly, Windows does not remove device or inf files, which cause incompatabilities. Secondly, all of your installations will break, requiring you to reinstall everything anyways.
Just reformat, which is really easy. Firstly, go ahead and backup any documents / save games or whatever to any spare media you have ( Probably floppies or a spare Hard Drive if you're like me and keep a 30GB HDD for backups ). After doing this, you should just insert your CD into the CD-ROM drive or do whatever is required for you to boot up to DOS. In DOS, you want to type: fdisk <ENTER> After this, enable large disk support in the prompt given and go ahead and delete any and all partitions on your Hard Drive. After doing that, recreate a PRIMARY partition on your hard drive the size of the entire drive. The reason you want to do that is to destroy the original FAT16 Filesystem, which only allowed up to 2GB Partitions. You can do this using the following steps, but it's more secure and less problematic if you do it this way. After this, you need to restart your computer. You can do this by typing: A:\ <ENTER>( if you're not there ) restart <ENTER> You'll go through the same process. Now, you need to do: format C: /V:[HardDriveName] /Q ( This does a quick format, which should be ok if you've used the Hard Drive before ) After this process, go ahead and reboot your computer once again. Now, go ahead and begin installing Windows 98. Well, that should work. Make sure you have the proper CD for Windows 98 to install it and that you don't require certain files on the Hard Drive before you do anything. If you didn't do that before you read this, I feel sorry for you. | |
It's not a file -- it's a whole CD. =|
Formatting a hard drive isn't a good idea unless you know exactly what you're doing, so I'd recommend dropping off your PC at a computer store somewhere and having them do it.
If you know any small computer stores that don't get much business, that's better -- they might show you how to do it if you ask them.
