Why does virtually every medieval themed game in existance have magic in it?
because without magic, where would be the fun click-on-verb-select-spell-select-target excitement come from?

Because magic is magic. ;-)

Mainly, people want to add ways of getting modern-ish delicacies and delights in a time period that would otherwise be really poor to live in.
Well, people don't get enough good ideas to make a medieval game, so they add some spice. Sorta like rice has no flavor until you add salt maybe? Play ultima online, do you think it would be fun without magic? That includes potions and other magic items, not just spells. Also magic can make for a more intriguing(spelled correctly?) story line.

Probaby just cause the attraction to swords and spells is greater then just sword play. Why hack a enemy to pieces when you can burn him to a crisp first?
Why does virtually every medieval fantasy game in existance focus on fighting?

Oh, I get it. You can't kill people with rocket launchers, so fireballs are the next best thing ;oP

Ooh, I thought of another reason: To get further from reality.

Games are better the further they get from reaity without making things more complicated. Sure, you might say CounterStrike is popular and it's not far from reality, but it is. Have YOU ever gone around shooting people with guns? I didn't think so. Magic is just a way to get further out. This also explains why there are no games based on sitting around in your underwear playing computer games all day.

Cause the medival period was a violent time in history. Combat happen everywhere, Ahh you touch my dog slash slash, you there peasent, slash slash

Mine doesn't.

The sims

Unfortunately, there are no skins of balding gamers sitting around in their boxers. So that doesn't count. The Sims is an exception. Then again, how many times a day do you get to play god to a housefull of people?
In response to Garthor
If your a parent you play god every day in a sense
In response to WildBlood
But it's less fun because you can't click and make them move.

Well, the dragons aren't going to slay themselves, you know.

Medieval fantasy is largely based off of the folklore and literature of medieval and ancient times. Quite a bit of that literature is based around really big and deadly things and the slaying thereof, and big noble wars.

As for the lack of purely historical medieval games (at least in the RPG genre), not entirely sure; yeah, magic can make things more interesting, but more often than not it's implemented in pretty bland fashion.

Tell that to my parents i swear parents run off syntext..

Wildblood.Move(locate(Room))
spawn(10) RoomClean(Stamina, Boredom, Willingness)
if(Willingness < 5)
Wildblood.Boredom -= 10
spawn(5) usr.Yell()
if(Willingness > 5)
Wildblood.Boredom += 20
Stamina -= 10
spawn(50) Wildblood.CleanRoom()

Lets put it this way, Why does virtually every game in existence focus on fighting?

The only games that I know of that don't focus on fighting are board games, educational programs, games for 2nd graders and under, and simulations (simcity, flight sims, the sims, etc.).

Pretty much every other commercial game is based upon fighting of one form or another. Whether it's blowing up enemy ships, hand to hand combat, running arround with a gun, or controlling entire armies at a time it's basically all fighting.

Maybe I've just missed a lot of non-fighting games but that's the impression that I've gotten.

Because games that focus on roleplaying feudal peasants are boring, and the aristocracy had nothing better to do than whack things with their swords for fun. (Had to keep those peasants in line, you know.)

Why not have magic in it? Answer that and I will give my reasons.

Profit, Profit, Profit! Most people who look for games are looking for games that allow you to kill others or harm them (Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Quake 3, Duke Nukem, Medal of Honour,ect. are all good examples of major sellers even though they are not medeivel). So companies take what gamers like and began molding it to their will into a game. Sometiems it may turn out great, and sometimes it may not be so good. Also, in Medeivel times, it was DEFINITELY not a great place to live in. I would have to say there were probably a good deal of fighting back then, not to mention the Black Plauge (I'm assuming it was around that time). Besides, what is wrong with fighting?
