I find that doing that artwork for games is generally a snap. Just point and click using bitmap images, copying and pasting and so on. I've been able to make that extensive so far in "Final Fantasy-The Hunting Grounds".

However, learning how to code the program is going to take as long as it will to make the game. I can't code for donuts, so here is the first of a long future of simple stupid questions:

How do I start everything off where a player can make a new character, pick the class (RPG here) and have them start in a certain spot on a map?

I looked at the demos and all that stuff, tried redoing it over, and I get errors aplenty. It's frustrating...
I wish all these damn newbies would say "Hi" and how they found BYOND. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

They just want free code.
mob
Login()
switch(input("What class?","Class") in list("Newbie","1337 d3wd","Anything that isn't as degrading as the other two"))
if("Newbie")
src << "Hello, newb."
src.client.mob = new /mob/Newbie()
if("1337 d3wd")
src << "1 |D\/\//\/ _/00, /\/00|3!"
del(src)
else
src << "Welcome, [src]!"
src.client.mob = new /mob/Warrior()
Newbie
Login()
src.loc = locate(12,30,1)
Warrior
Login()
src.loc = locate(4,4,1)
I suggest taking a look at the Wicked Witch of the Web's(Zilal) newbie guide, it can be located here http://zilal.byond.com/tutorials/zbt.html. That is what you should take a look at and follow the steps, then once you get a basic idea try your own ideas =).

What gets to me, is how you follow my posts around checking my spelling.

I found Byond looking up hints for Dragon Warrior 3, I think it was. And I ran into Dragon Warrior on-line on the search engine and was blown away, had to check it out. That's how I found Byond. Played for awhile, thought it was time to have a whack at contributing...

Anyway, I'm not really interested in "free code". I'd like to learn how to actually do it on my own. Free code will be good in and of itself, but it doesn't really go anywhere. Thanks anyway though. ;]

heh, I have you beat. I checked out your demos (and your Realm of Mordar) quite some time ago. They got me started pretty well.

You know your Realm of Mordar game is great for just about everything except for your goddamn battle system. I can't believe how much work you put into the graphics and sounds and details (doors opening and closing with a sound to back it, really cool)and then settled with this press-the-button-and-miss battle system. If you changed ONLY your battle system to turn-based (I believe turn-based battle systems are superior on Byond because of the delay) your game would be a smash.

Heh, relax. Sariat has posted (spammed?) BYOND ads in other forums and likes to take credit when new people show up. ;)

Most people don't post until they need something and that's fine.

I don't recommend trying either, it's just not worth it.

Not worth it? Pah . . . . what's this generation coming
to. Coding gives you a certain sense of power. It's the
power to create things from virtual nothingness. Nothing
(IMHO) can compare to watching that new code idea you had
snapping into place perfectly. Although that rarely
happens on the first go-around, the attempts in and of
themselves are enjoyable. Sure, it didn't work right, but
you (hopefully) figured out why, and either fixed it or
took a different path. Those different paths may give
you new ideas and directions to take things.

Not worth it?
It's at least worth trying, and not worth giving up just
because you get frustrated.

Psst. You snipped the line Awakening was replying to. I believe the key words were "for donuts". Now for packaged donuts or stale donuts, I might not code either. For fresh-baked donuts however... ;)

Is it a bad thing when other people come to BYOND becuase of me? (Unless they are DBZer, no :P) Look at Malive and Corperate Dog.... w00t w00t!!

And I only advertise once on a forum (at least once every few months)

Relax, Sariat. New people are good. Please keep in mind that "spammed" did have a question mark by it. I have no way of knowing where or how many times you posted.

Unfortunately, I was trying to come up with a light-hearted excuse for your apparently poor behavior. It could have been your sense of humour, but newbies have not been around to understand it. (Okay, there are plenty of current members who don't understand it either, but that's besides the point. ;) ) I tried to make my remark friendly and possibly get a smirk out of you, but I guess my humour doesn't always translate well either.

Criticizing newbies because they are asking for help is not good. They are here for their own reasons. They don't have to dance for us.
