I watched The Matrix on Fox last night, and I was really disappointed that they cut my favorite line, which I think sums up pretty much the entire point of the movie, 'There is no spoon'.
Just thought I'd let you all know I was annoyed. :)

That's why I never watch movies on TV, they're pointless, I usually just borrow one from the video store (I get them free because I dated the boss' daughter until she moved in with her mother)

While we're on the topic of poorly edited TV movies... everyone should attempt to watch the TV version of Mallrats. It was on ABC some time ago, and USA (I think) was showing it pretty recently. At least half of the movie had to be removed, and the other half was edited so much as to be barely recognizable. The actor they got to replace Jay's voice sounded nothing like him, and the lines they replaced stuff with were even worse. It contains such gems as:
"Holy snot! Frickin Yoda and stuff!" and lots of references to putting people "in a confining space" (like the backseat of a Volkswagen). The video they show towards the end (during the gameshow) appears to have been replaced with some outtakes of Affleck laughing. It makes no sense. It's almost as funny as the original movie, but for entirely different reasons. -AbyssDragon |

Damn. Why would anyone want to show Mallrats if they where going to take out all the swearing? Whats next, showing 'Max Hardcore's Slutfest 3' and cutting out the sex?
It probably would have cost more to get rid of Jays foul mouth then to make a whole new movie. -DogMan |

It was on ABC some time ago, and USA (I think) was showing it pretty recently. I saw Scrooged on USA a few years ago and their editing was completely irrational. But now I have it on DVD, so screw you, USA Network! |
I desided not to watch it because it looked gay on my 47" wide screen, so i didnt know they cut that, but that would make me mad.(now no one get mad that i sead gay, i ment it in a diffrent meaning as homosexual) I desided i would wait till we got digital cable before i would watch anymovie as good as that should be.

Yes, you used the word "gay" meaning "bad/stupid". Now why would I, a person belonging to a class of people largely referred to as being "gay", be mad that you used the word "gay" to mean "bad/stupid?"
Could it be that I don't like being associated with things that are stupid? Could it be that I don't like the same label that is applied to me being equated to massive negativity? Could it be that I object to the damage that is done to young minds when their first exposure to the word "gay" is in the context you've used it, so that they come to think of "gay" meaning nothing but bad things, so that when they later learn that there's whole groups of people who are "gay", they're already brainwashed into thinking that's a horrible thing without ever having a chance to make up their own minds? If you have to say "now don't get mad" when you say something, then don't say it. Would you say, "It looked pretty Irish to me," about something you didn't like and expect it not to offend people from Ireland? 'cause I have to say, that's the Scoobertest thing I've heard in a long time... you know, no offense intended. |

hey i could have ment i looked happy! And i figured you would get mad, but it was part of my point. Gay realy means happy, not homosexual, im not sure how those two got mixed up.

"Happy" makes less sense than "homosexual" in the context you used, you probably wouldn't even have thought of that if Air Mapster hadn't brought it up.
"Gay" became a synonym for "homosexual" most likely because of the stereotyped idea of what a homosexual male acts like. However it happened, it did happen, and linguistically, "gay" means "homosexual" more often in modern usage than it means "happy." The use of the word "gay" that you have used does not come from the original meaning, but from the modern one... it arose as an insult or exclamation of derision at traits perceived (often wrongly) to be homosexual. A man wearing a scarf? That is soooooooo gay. Ignorant children, hearing these sorts of exclamation and not knowing what the larger meaning of the word "gay" is just took it to be an insult and so started using it as a general word for anything they felt was bad and stupid. This has the vicious cycle effect I mentioned in my post... when these same children grow up, the word "gay" is pretty close to hardwired in their brain as meaning "bad." Excuse me for objecting to your participation in the systematic poisoning of people's minds against my right to exist. You insulted me and a whole group of people. I didn't need to post an explanation of why it was insulting... I could've just deleted your post and given you an official warning in my capacity as a forum moderator. Well, let this serve as a warning... you've been told it's unacceptable, you've been told why it's unacceptable, so the next time you use a word referring to any class of people as a pejorative (insult), then you will be removed from the boards for a period of time depending on how gross the transgression is. |

Shows just how limited that person's vocabulary is, 2.) Demonstrates a huge lack of respect. |

Look, this isn't about me trying to get an apology from you, this is me telling you, what you did was unacceptable and DON'T DO IT AGAIN. That's not contestable.
It would be the same no matter what group you were insulting. If you told someone who did something nice it was "white of them," if you said someone who added a high subscription to their game had "Jewed their game", or so on, you would have to expect moderators to come down on you like a ton of bricks, because such things are completely unacceptable. You can explain how you don't mean it to be insulting, you bring up all the different people in the world who aren't insulted by it, it doesn't change the fact that such things are not acceptable. This is no different at all. I have many friend that are gay(all female that i know of because i dont even know any male gays) thay use the word gay in that contect all the time. Im sorry if it insalted you, but i know gay people who it would not. Ignorance isn't limited to heterosexual people... You know what? There was a time (probably still is, some parts of the South), where white people considered the highest praise you could give a black person to be to call them white. "Inside, you're pretty white after all." "Thanks, that's mighty white of you." Black kids raised in this environment even bought into it... to the point that some of them even started using the language themselves. Sad fact: members of any group of oppressed people can actually be convinced, through steady indoctrination, that they are actually worse than others, that they deserve oppression. Your friends are are shooting themselves in the foot and don't even know it. If they are your friends, or more to the point, if YOU are THEIR friend, then knock it off, not just on here but everywhere... you are hurting your friends every time you do that. They might even tell you, "It's just a word, it doesn't bother us," but even if they don't consciously make the connection in their mind, the fact is it does have a psychological effect. Gay teenagers tend to have higher incidences of low self esteem and related psychological problems, up to and including suicide. Is that any wonder, when every five seconds someone innocently drives home the refrain "gay==bad"? They can say it's just a word, but no one's mind can ignore that sort of association forever. Also, even if the effect on your friends in minimal, they are spreading the poison to everyone around them... they are recruiting and training people to repress them and discriminate against them later in life. I'm glad that there's places in America where gay teens apparently have it so well that they can apparently be complacent and remain blissfully ignorant of the larger issues that face them, but when they have to deal with the job market and the housing market, with unfair insurance coverage and unequal employment benefits, with discriminatory laws and policies, they'll probably be in for a rude awakening. So, you, friend that you are... be a friend and help make the world a little better place for them. Knock it off with the "gay" crap. |

i have a few black people on my bus that tend to say "Could you be anymore white" or "Stupid white people" And you know what, i dont care, nothing about it bothers me, now i will respect you and not use the word gay in that contect again, but have you ever though your to sensitive to what others say? The reason black people making insults using white in them doesnt bother me is that i dont care, its not a big deal, im friends with a few of them and i know they arnt realy meaning it to be mean, thats just something they say, so who is it hurting? The few people who care, whats the point in caring? I dont know. Now this is the last i will say on this topic and on this subject, good day.

It's not the insult to me that bothers me, it's the larger effect. It's easy for you to not to be affected by "joking" slurs against whites... aside from a few cases where affirmative action is being applied incorrectly, you're on top of the heap. You don't have to live with discrimination or unfair laws.
Again, on the forum, we do not casually insult huge groups of people. That's not your choice, so that subject is closed. Now, in the larger world, you're free to do as you choose. All I'm trying to do is enlighten you. There's good in the world, and there's evil. There's big deliberate evil, and there's little, casual evil. A lot of little casual evil adds up to one big one, and once you know what's going on, continuing to participate in it makes it deliberate. My last post on the subject. I don't want this thread to be completely hijacked. |

For the future, if you want a fairly equivalent alternative that won't offend anyone, try "lame". Actually I guess it could offend plenty of people, but I've never been called on it.

Not sure if this is what you meant or not. They cut out the part with the kid and the spoon in the waiting room, but they left in the part with Neo saying "There is no spoon" in the elevator. And I noticed it to, along with several other parts cut out. Damn I shouldnt have watched that so many times.

Sheesh. Of all the dumb places to cut, that really is the worst. Morons. I posit bad TV editing should be a capital crime.
