What's the alternative to Final Fantasy? Dragon Warrior/Quest? Ultima??

Well the whole category of games that resemble the FF games I don't really like since they try and make an emphisis on story but all it does is detract from gameplay and thier dialog writters really suck at comming up with good dialog. It doesn't matter how intreging or bad of a plot a game has if the dialog is bad the plots going to sound terrible. But as far as alternatives go I think the Dragon Warrior series hasn't strayed from thier roots much and have managed to pull thier gameplay through as well as improve it unlike the FF series. Ultima games have thier own flaws. Ultima is really interesting just because it's very non-linear, after the intro areas it's usually here's the world and you just go wandering forever. That is fun for so long until the point where you just can't find that one person you need to talk to to advance the game or find some obscure item in the corner of some cavern. Ultima is also very different since it was designed to be a computer game and not a console game so it was built with vastly different constraints than a console game. As far as games I think are good that have similiar concepts(gaining power through number as you progress through the game and have a story as a prime factor in the game) are the Baler's Gate Series, Icewind Dale series(These really aren't roleplaying games more hack and slash than anything else but still very fun), and Arcanum(This is probably the closest you're going to get to an RPG for the PC the only thing better is actually playing a pencil and paper RPG). |
It's not the attacks worth seeing, it's to see the entire world re-done in better graphics and more detail. I wanted to see the Kefka Tower thing in 3d. if they do remake it, I am almost sure they're going to add stuff anyways and maybe more plot. *cough* Look at all thier previous "remakes" they are just the same game directly ported which only adds to the problems in the game such as excessive loading where it isn't even needed! Enix has done a fairly good job. Squaresoft just doesn't even come close to doing a good job on rereleasing game. |
Oh, and Theodis to answer your questions, the players of Final Fantasy like it because they like gaining upon the story, each Final Fantasy has a new story which makes it better than the last one for the players, just because you don't like it doesn't mean its a horrible thing. Gag. Good story? That may be true but the way they do dialog is just gaggy both the good guys and bad guys aren't even close to believable and they don't even do a good job when trying to be serious or funny. Read a book by any notable author and you can see vast differences and there are plenty of other games which actually have believable dialog. It may be just because of the fact that much of the original meaning was lost in the English translation but you shouldn't just like it because it's Final Fantasy and everyone for some reason or another says thier plots are good. |

WHAT IS A FRIKIN CHOCOBO! They are so stupid, they dont do anything ever. And wow 3d attacks its not like you cant play ff8 or 7 and look at them. Seeing half the attacks in the games are the same just with silly names like Firega and Blizzaga, NOW THATS JUST STUPID, naming something and putting ga infront of it, its a waste of time and its stealling the gamecubes profits which it needs! Look here sonny, i dont care what my name is, but i could make an attack in about 12 seconds, like get something to do with grass, like ivy and add a suffux and there we go like, ivyga or ivykra or maybe ivygya. I sweared that i will never like Square, and i never will. |
Nobody buys it just because everyone says the plots are good, and there is no real way to tell if they are considering people have different tastes. The problem is, is that when people try to talk about a good game to those people, then someone else jumps in to anger those talking about the game. I'm sure the meaning of this thread was to talk about Kingdom Hearts and Square and what not, not to hear people contradict it. It's not very enjoyable to talk about something you like and then having someone else jump in critisizing what you like. Also, comparing Final Fantasy to a book is not as predictable as you think, books fit tastes of different people and I'm sure someone would find the Final Fantasy storyline much more interesting than a book, it just depends on the book your comparing it to, and the person who is judging both.
Read a book by any notable author and you can see vast differences and there are plenty of other games which actually have believable dialog. It all is based on writing styles, and it doesn't take a notable author to write a good book. <<>>Kusanagi<<>> |
Wow, you hate an entire game company because of the way they spell their magic spells? Or is it one of those, "They are taking money away from Gamecube", bits? Just to clear the Gamecube bit to people, Square is not stealing money, it's a little something called buisness where Square makes games that sell and that gets them money. Now Mrhat99au, we don't care if you hate Square, this thread was made for Square and it's products, so don't tell us you hate them since nobody cares, this thread was made to talk about Square and it's products, not to express your "deep" hate for the company.

This is a post on a public forum so you should expect largely ranged opinions. Just like for DBZ there are people who love it, don't care about it, and absolutly despise it. And the original post was asking for opinions so you should be expecting arguments. So whether or not you think Mrhat99au's opinion is valid doesn't mean he can't post it provided he follows the community guidelines. |

Well maybe you didn't but there is that whole fad thing and hive mentality. When you have a lot of people or a person that a lot of people follow claim that something is real good you will have followers that will believe it or or claim to believe it just to fit it. It happins on everything from cloths to food to game to anything else there are going to be those people that just tag along. All big reknowned companies like Square, Blizzard, and many others are going to have large amounts of people buy thier stuff just for the company name. My game teacher even claimed that he though Warcraft 3 sucked but despite that he will buy the next Blizzard game the day it comes out. FFX which I have heard was pretty bad from a lot of people(most of which bought it) still sold well just due to the fact that it was a FF game. I'm sure the meaning of this thread was to talk about Kingdom Hearts and Square and what not, not to hear people contradict it. No. No. No. The initial thread was asking for opinions. "I thought this game looked stupid because its Final Fantasy/Disney but i rented and played it i think its one of the best PS2 games out and anyone who says its kiddy because its got disney is very wrong i enjoyed playing it so much that im going to buy it i recomend this game to the young and old give it a try and give me some responses on what you think about it. SaiyanBrad" It's not very enjoyable to talk about something you like and then having someone else jump in critisizing what you like. The games I like to play get critisized all the time and I don't care at all because most the people who critisize the games I like only care about graphics. ZAngband, Arcanum, and SLASH'EM are all awsome games made to near perfection gameplay wise but they get bashed on due to thier "primitive" graphics. Also, comparing Final Fantasy to a book is not as predictable as you think, books fit tastes of different people and I'm sure someone would find the Final Fantasy storyline much more interesting than a book, it just depends on the book your comparing it to, and the person who is judging both. True, anything based on an opinion is very subjective and I should have compared it to a play since the FF games's script would be more like that than a book. As far as my suspention of disbelief goes thier dialog was very unbelievable and I couldn't think of any real person that would act like that. But that's just my opinion which probably does vastly differ from yours. Read a book by any notable author and you can see vast differences and there are plenty of other games which actually have believable dialog. I never said a non-notable author couldn't write a good book, but chances are a notable author picked at random will do a better job than a random non-notable one. |

Jees..It took me a good 15 minutes to read all this. I was not really originally involved in this, umm, argument so to say, but after reading it all I got lots of stuff I wanna say even though no one cares. Fun.
Kingdom of hearts: It looks good, I have heard so many good things about it, and I definately look forward to seeing Sephiroth and Cloud again, especially now that he is evil that makes it more interesting. If you have played Final Fantasy 7 at least 4 times like I have, you do sort of get the feeling Cloud has evil properties to him that are hidden or he does not know are there. It isn't obvious though, but I really really get into these games. Which brings me to the next argument: Squaresoft SUCKS: This is an interesting one. I will not deny I own basically every single Square/Squaresoft game created, and enjoy them, but there are a few things I can elaborate on. Whether or not they are called RPGs, I don't care. And gameplay, sure it is repeatative and I understand that. Even I get annoyed with the random battles. The inventory and equip menu was very very evil in Final Fantasy 8. Infact Final Fantasy 8 is the worst Final Fantasy I have ever played and it will continue to collect dust on my shelf until I die. Final Fantasy 7 and down had nice menus. I care about the story. I love the stories and I feel for the characters. I will play to the end, annoying battles or not. When Sephiroth came down and impaled Aeris, I was so shocked and so angry I was yelling at a TV at something that wasn't real. The music and the movies in that game were perfect. I do not care about graphics, but the areas you goto were so well done. It's just like the DBZ issue. I as well like DBZ, and anything that comes out of Japan really. Anime, and its unique culture. I am a hardcore Otaku. But the problem is, if something becomes popular, people will get all worked up and say you are just trying to be like everyone else, that you are meeting the standards, to have something in common or to be able to do something and not have to worry because there are other people along with you. If someone were to ask me what my favourite movie is, I would say The Fellowship of the Ring. But I don't. Because it is new, it is epic, and people will just say "Oh really...gee.." So hating Squaresoft because you think Chocabos are dumb? My god shut up! Squaresoft makes these games because PEOPLE DO SEEM TO ENJOY PLAYING THEM. If those millions of copies sold didn't get sold, well then I think they would stop making them now wouldn't they. Squaresoft is a genre in itself. It is the Final Fantasy, because each addition is a completely new world, with a history and unique characters. The fantasy ends in one world, but theres a new one in the next. FF4[2]: One of the best. FF6[3]: Rated the best. FF7: My ultimate favourite. A must play. FF8: Sucked. You dont get money from naked animals.. FF9: Better. I can't complain. FFX: Didn't care for it. Terrible voiceovers although interesting story Chrono Trigger is a must play. It is on snes and there are not any random battles. Plus the fighting moves and things are much more interesting and its all on one screen. Very good story. Classic. Other good Squaresoft Games are Wild Arms 2, Final Fantasy Tactics, Brave Fencer Musashiden(Addicting), and Xenogears. As for that Newgrounds movie, I found it entertaining. I laughed slightly, but there was one error in it. When they were, I am guessing making fun of Japanese names, or just mentioning Japanese names...they were not Japanese, they were Chinese. Too bad. Wish I could remember the real name of the Final Fantasy composer. It has been awhile since I looked him up. As for Max Payne, it is an overrated terrible game. I finished it but only because I was bored. The slow motion bulletime stuff is fun the first 5 times, but then it just gets annoying. If you want a good game that is First Person Shooter, I recommend Half-Life. For multiplay, Quake 2. Quake 3 sucks. The thing, I have yet to play the game but I loved the movie because of the unique effects they used. You should see it at least once in your life. And now I am done my rant. I have to goto school for my one class, but I will back to elaborate on anything more if someone wants. <shrugs> -Chibi |
