Does it have to be from a videogame or computer game? (Or any game played on a monitor/screen for that matter.)

Ya if board games count then Cornel(I have no clue) Mustard from Clue would win no hands down. He was in the war after all...

Although my firsthand experience with DBZ is practically nil, I have trouble understanding how such a character could be construed as "pure good" or "the ultimate hero." In a purified, elemental sense perhaps, but as a character? The situation, as I understand it, is this:
"I am stronger than the bad guys, who are stronger than the innocents. I defeat the bad guys, therefore I am a hero." Pretty straightforward, eh? But here's a curveball for you--what if we tried a bit of a different hero? "I am weaker than the bad guys, who are stronger than the innocents. I cannot possibly hope to defeat the bad guys, but I will try anyways." In typical mainstream literature, this is "I cannot possibly hope to defeat the bad guys, but by some incredible miracle I will succeed anyways," but nevertheless, I think the second sort is several orders of magnitude more heroic than the first sort. You seem to be saying that the decision to do good is somehow harder for possessing such unimaginable strength; in truth, it only becomes easier. |
Well, for the most part, the good guys always start out weaker than the bad guys in the series...
The bad guys always have the upperhand until the final decisive moment of the battle, in which the good guys attain higher powers... And in the few instances where the good guys actually start out with the upperhand, something always goes horribly wrong to ruin their advantage... So yes, Goku definitely is one of the "I am weaker than the bad guys, who are stronger than the innocents. I cannot possibly hope to defeat the bad guys, but I will try anyways." Only, his attitude isn't one of "I cannot hope to win" but of "I must always have hope that I'll win" Which I find to be much better than the former... |
Somehow that doesn't surprise me; as I said, that's basically how most literature works (heck, for that matter, that was basically Lexy's point too), although the "good guys attain higher powers" bit as a deus ex machina sounds bland at best (not to mention, you can only suddenly get more powerful at the last second so many times before you start jeopardizing your underdog status). But you didn't answer the rest of the issue--Goku would seem to remain the big tough guy when not being immediately threatened by bad guys. He's still astronomically more powerful than the innocents he's saving: whatever he decides to do in regards to them, it is a comparitively easy decision to make, because he is (I presume) not answerable to them in the slightest. It is within my power to crush a lot of insects that aren't particularly harming anybody: does that mean I'm a saint just for not going around stomping on anthills?

My point on that bit basically hinges on the axiom of "Power corrupts"... Goku could easily have whatever he wants, or destroy whatever he wants (and in fact, that's the natural way of his race... Saiyans are conquerors...) but he doesn't... He only uses his powers for good... (of course, his innocence and goodness comes about from a bump on the head as a child that erased his genetic programming for being evil...)
The same can be said of most other super heroes, though...so I suppose it doesn't really say much for Goku being better than they are...lol |
I agree with SuperSaiyanGokuX. [EDIT: I'm referring the the DBZ ignorance, not the "what type of hero is best" stuff. Me write slow.] I know that some general moral argument can be made about the strongest fighters winning in the end. However, the heroes become stronger by fighting the bad guys and/or preparing to fight them after getting stomped on.
The problem is not a lack of weak heroes. The problem is the repeated plot elements. You will see the heroes fall. You won't see them win through anything but fighting. A weak fighter can't defeat the villan in the final battle through trickery, but a weak fighter can become a strong fighter. Granted, it can bore the snot out of people. However, the strength of the heroes is not the problem. PS: Weren't weak villans one of the worst problems for Superman comics a few years ago? It was one of those things Wizard spoke of when some staff on the comics changed. PSS: SuperSaiyanGokuX, don't try explaining the defeat of Boo. ;) |

In the reality of a story, Superman couldn't be defeated by the Saiyans, except temporarily. It's the same argument as the Predator vs. Federation thread. The Predators never get to win except when they're fighting something less sympathetic than themselves... they're not allowed to. Poorly drawn, overly arrogant aliens who have great powers for no particular reason are not allowed to beat Superman. Oh, it is on now Lexy! I'll just call Fox right up and ask them to make a movie, Predator vs. Federation(If they don't own rights to Startrek, they will now! Just like they own the other 90% of the worlds crappiest T.V. shows.)....(Holds up phone and acts like he's talking to someone, but really it's a dead tone.) Actually, if Fox really did own most of the world's crappy T.V. shows, then why don't they have DBZ? Oh, and it's ironic that they have very few quality shows, yet they also have the Simpsons, strange... very strange. <<>>Kusanagi<<>> |
I enjoyed some parts of Dragonball, especially that Goku could get killed by bullets :). I would have to say my favorite segment of the show is when he first goes to the world martial arts tournament, and the top fighters can actually compete fairly with him. Then there was his master who had to use a disguise because he could not allow Goku to win the tournament, if he did then Goku might of stopped training and got bored since he would think he was the strongest. Plus, there was not all this, "My big blue beam can eat your big yellow beam, so... KIAAAA!!!", but more of people doing sneaky moves to win the outcome of the battle. I would say that Goku was much stronger than Master Roshi, but Roshi had much more experience which earned him the victory, like his Hypnosis technique had to of had some everlasting effect, and his split image technique(Which was mimiced and increased by Goku as triple image or something like that.). The coolest part was Yamcha using that Wolf Fang Fist attack against that Wolf-Human guy, I thought he lost at first!

I guess we are forgetting that there were some actual dbz games made. Well ones that were liscensed anyway (sp on liscensed please).

Secondly, I don't think most of you people know who Dante is and what he is capable of. The man is dead so basically can't really be killed again, he is half demon so is extremely strong, can jump about 10 stories high, and has weapons out of this world, not to mention the Devil Mode ability which powers him up more then he already is.
Thanks for everyone who replied and get'em coming.
