Today, in a game I was playing, someone told me that I shouldn't use grammar like:
What are you doing today? I'm watching T.V

He said I should go:
wot r u doin today? im watchin tv

He also told me that grammar on BYOND isn't worth anything, because no one cares. As I recall, on the BYOND forums are get forever getting nagged at even for a spelling error.

A correction the other way I could see.

Someone actually telling you you should talk like that is too stupid to live.

The nagging is a bit much, but I believe some of it is important to have. We can't have the place descending entirely into madness, but neither can we jump down some poor 12-year-old's throat because he accidentally put "u" in a post without thinking.

Im going to start a n00b reeducation program, for all those who insist on talking like fools. They will be givin grammer and spelling lessons daily, and then beaten becuase I dont like them.

I guess I did over react about the nagging. But alot of the time when I read a post done by a 12 year old, or younger, they tend to use "u" "plz" "r" "4" "2" short expressions like that, and end up getting flamed about there sad grammar.

Ok, maybe 'jumping' isn't called for, but correction for someone 'accidentally' using bad grammar is still in need. Regardless of age, and *especially* of the younger generation who has a bad tendency of being too lazy to type.

Oh, give me a break - 'Accidental bad grammar' my left butt-cheek! This is *not* - I repeat - *not* a real-time medium. You have all the time in the world before you press that 'post' button to review what you have said. If you don't, you should not be posting. There is generally no good excuse not to take a few moments to review what you wrote before committing the post to the forum. And even then, you can still edit your post if you discover something awry.

Although I'm not perfect, I try my best to look over what I've typed, to eliminate the obvious errors.

Grammar and spelling play a key part in allowing everyone to understand you clearly - if people cannot take the time to be understood, then they should not whine when things don't go their way.

Speaking of spelling, it's not "grammer" either.

Whoops again. Give me a break, I'm 16.

And I'm 15, age is no excuse.
If everyone in the world spoke like "wot r u doin today? im watchin tv", then we'd all be a bunch of nanderthals. But anyways, that's one of my pet peeves. When people speak like "hey yo wot up nothn mch herr yo", it really ticks me off. It makes me picture them as a monkey typing on a keyboard... which would be pretty funny.

If you are under the age of eight it is.

Ah. I recall an event that occurred today. Our class was in the computer lab, nearing the end of the period. We were all standing, waiting for the bell to ring, and all of the monitors showed the standard Windows log-on window. One of the guys standing next to me typed on the keyboard of one of the computers, "i hate u!" At that moment, I thought to myself, "They're all the same."

Didnt you also say your no longer in school? I havent even taken 10th grade english yet.

I strongly agree with you that people should look over there posts before actually hitting posts. However the mistake Lummox JR mentioned could easily be overlooked if you use net speak in other places (Ie, MSN, AIM, SMS Messages, Chatrooms).
If your used to seeing "u" there, its not going to look out of place.
With the younger generation I dont think its a case of being too lazy to type, its a case of being too slow. They jump right into there IM programs and have to instantly know how to type a hundred words a minute.
Then since they use net speak in other online situations, they use it here too. Im guessing that net speak would become a habit.
Back when I first got on a computer the only reason speed typing was needed is if I had an assignment due the next day. So A) I Couldn't use any sort of short hand without getting in trouble, and B) Short hand would only shave a few seconds off trivial stuff like leaving a reminder on the desktop or entering a highscore.
I think the net speak trend is more closely aligned with learning to use a PC (Or typewritter) inside or outside of the internet.
Anyway, for the most part I agree with what you said. Ive never been able to understand how people could post something so full of grammer and spelling mistakes its unreadable.

I find it hard to believe that you've graduated and have done and are doing most of the crap you tell me.

This reminds me...

One time, in an online chatroom, I was the only one who used proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

'So how fast do you type?' was one of the questions brought up.

I said, "60 WPM," and a bunch of other people did the classic "lol" and said, 'Man, you're slow... I type 100 WPM.' (Mind you, they weren't typing in the proper grammar I'm paraphrasing with.)

I chuckled to myself and said, "And how many words per minute is it when you type *properly*?"

At that point, people started swearing at me. I couldn't stop laughing.
