Greg wrote: Yu-Gi-Oh is a Digimon type of cartoon. You go around challenging people in card battles where you do battle on this Hologram field and your monster become real on the Field and use attacks when you call upon them. Each fighter takes turn on the field and you get Points. Once one fighters points hit zero that fighter looses. Each fighter plays for "Stars". Once you get 10 stars you get to enter this castle thing where you fight this guy(dont know his name I forgot) I think it is Pegasus not too sure (I feel really bad right now :'(...) Anyway, I cant think right now. But Yu-Gi-Oh is the name of a fighter (the hero of course). But I will stop my ranting because 1) I cant describe things well. 2) I feel like crap. 3) You might Get on my back about this constant babbling so :P Lee |

[snip] My answer would be no, but the name itself is enough to get me to ask, "What is it?" =) Mix Medabots with Card Captor Sakura. There are people who compete in a sport. There are cards to collect (and pawn off to kids) which include creatures. There is some larger enemy and story. Mellifluous comparison to Digimon holds with the latest Digimon season's attempt to include a card sport. Both seem to have a continous story. Neither seem to speak down to kids too much. However, the Digimon are characters like any other. The cards of Yu-Gi-Oh, from the admittedly few episodes I have seen, usually are just pieces in games. When I first saw the series, I shrugged it off becauase it was on WB, where Pokemon is. However, the only reason I don't watch now is because, once I found out it seemed interesting, I can't stand watching continuous stories out of order. |
I'll watch it when someone gives me a satisfactory explanation of why it takes two hyphens to form a six letter, three syllable word.

Yeah I mean, that is a good reason not to watch a show, its name. Why on earth would anyone want to watch a show that has 3 syllables, BUT ONLY HAS 6 LETTERS!? Perhaps Yu-Gi-Oh means something in Japanese, or heck, maybe when they were thinking of what they should call the main character, somone came up with the name! You can't judge a Saturday morning cartoon by it's cover...I mean, name.

isnt that the guy in the movie "HOOK"? Almost, but I believe it's, Rufio, that or Ru-Fi-O |
I'm not objecting to the number of letters per syllable... many syllables are easily represented by only two letters. My question (and the part of my post you completely ignored) is the necessity of the hyphens. They convey nothing... the syllable breaks are obvious enough without them.
Why is this a good reason not to watch the show? Because it shows a bad stylistic decision on the show's creators or translators. If what they put forward to entice new viewers is that much of a turn off, why should I expect any better from the actual show? It's not a very good reason, I admit, but in the lack of any more compelling reason in favor of it, it's enough. |

I have an idea for you ^_^ Just watch one episode of this cartoon and tell us your thoughts exactly on the cartoon that way we will know exactly what your getting at on this cartoon as I only watch cartoons to entertain myself. I dont really see most names a turn off. How you do that for yourself, well, I couldnt do it because I have never tried lol. But only afew names of cartoons really turned me away from them :-P Sorry about babbling aloud of crap there if I did as my head hurts :( Anyway, just thought I would say that and if you do actually watch one episode Lexy (dont think you will though) post your thoughts on it ok. Like you did with the other thread...er...better still lets sod my idea as last time someone turned it into a flamed post...Me and my stupid head! Lee *shuts up now* |

My question (and the part of my post you completely ignored) is the necessity of the hyphens. They convey nothing... the syllable breaks are obvious enough without them. I beleive I know why. In Japan, it would -probably- be pronounced with 2 sylables as they say things faster. So instead of sounding like Yu-Gi-Oh, it would sound like Yuhg-hio. also they could've added that so people know how to say it, as it could also be said Yu-Ghi-o. this is what I think though, as in japan, they dont call tokyo to-ky-o, by rather to-kyo. |
Actually the show is about Yugi Moto(me! his name is not Yu-Gi-Oh!!!!)and his Millenium Puzzle which his grandpa gave him which he is destined to build, and the cards which were recreated by Maximelian L. Peaguses Crawford(what a long name!) which was facinated by the heiroglyphics of the young pharoh fighting a mage called Seto.
Once Yugi finishes the puzzle he is bonded with a spirit who in the past was a pharoh who fought against heinshin, seto and mages and saved the world by summoning monsters from the dark realm, the reason he fought against them was because they had almost all the millenium items except the millenium puzzle eventually the pharoh is losing and is told by Simon Muran(his little annoying advisor) to destroy the millenium puzzle(which is like a charm on a chain) he throws it and it is destroyed and he saves the world. But he is stuck in it until somebody builds it ,later Yugi builds it and we are once again left at the part of the show where Yugi is the hero, one day Yugi takes his friend Joey Wheeler to his grandpa's shop where Joey sees the BLUE EYES WHITE DRAGON which is a legendardy card, he asks to buy it but Yugi's grandpa says no it is not for sale because his best friend gave it to him a long time ago. Than Seto Kaiba(reincarnation or decendent of Seto,I think both) comes into the shop and disses Yugi's grandpa but sees the Blue Eyes White Dragon and asks to duel him for it, than Yugi's grandpa goes on about the heart of the cards(which he beleives helps him win)he goes to duel Kaiba but Kaiba uses his latest invention, a virtual reality chamber ring thing where you put your card and it appears in the ring. Yugi's grandpa gets a heart attack from the fright and because kaiba has 3 blue eyes white dragon. Yugi gets to kaiba corp and sees his grandpa in pain and kaiba has grandpa's blue eyes white dragon and rips it. Yugi gets pissed off and the spirit takes over grandpa says to Yugi to beat kaiba. Yugi goes and fights kaiba and is losing against kaiba's 3 blue eyes but has amazing luck how he always does and takes out Exodia which is another legendary card and summons it and kills all 3 blue eyes w dragons and wins. Kaiba is pissed off since he was the world champion and soon Peaguses(has a millenium item, the millenium eye which helps read minds) finds out Yugi won and begins with a tournament called Duelist kingdom where you get 2 starchips and a video by mail. Yugi receives tha invitation and he wants to open it with his friends Tea,Tristen,Joey and his grandpa when he puts the video in Peaguses appears on TV and uses the powers of the dark Realm to suck them in his friends are frozen and Yugi is forced to duel peaguses in the dark realm and if he wins his friends are safe if he loses their souls are lost forever. Yugi duels him and almost wins but the time runs out so Peaguse steals his grandpa's soul but leaves his friends and tells him he knows what he has to do Yugi is forced to go to the tournament on an island and joey goes along with yugi so yugi gives him 1 starchip and tea and tristen sneak on the boat.... That is where the story starts off...By the way Yu-Gi-Oh means king of games in japanese |
Heh...I feel kind of silly replying to a revived 9-month old topic...but I just felt the need to explain the name of the show... (although Yugi Moto's post below mentions it, I figured I'd expand on that)
Yu-Gi-Oh isn't one word... It's three words in a related phrase... It roughly translates to King of Games... It could just as easily be named "Yu Gi Oh" without the hyphens, but I suppose they wanted to tie the individual words into one title (not "title" as in book title, but "title" as in "Sir")... "King Of Games" is slightly different than "King-of-Games"...lol |
Ive seen the show a few times it was okay the first few times but after youve seen yugi duel 2-3 times you can practicly tell what he is gunna do... ive also noticed in like every battle the 4th card he gets is the Dark Magician...

My answer would be no, but the name itself is enough to get me to ask, "What is it?" =)
