Is there a way I could burn a couple Avi Videos from my PC to a CD-R then watch the Videos on that CD-R in a DVD Player or X-Box?
Yep. You just need to burn them as video CDs (they may need to be in a divx format for this). A lot of burners can do that (Nero Burning ROM can, I believe). Not all DVD players will play them, but I think most do.

There are gobs and gobs of free DVD-to-VCD/AVI/MPG/Divx rippers out there - ya just gotta look for them... one that I use often to rip German DVDs (to get the English soundtracks for me so that I can watch them on my comp at home or on the road through the laptop CD player) is called "Gordian Knot" ( http://gknot.doom9.org - comes in two packages that you both need) - it is a collection of excellent DVD ripping tools covering everything from AVI conversion to VCD creation to alternative dubbing. It does have a steep learning curve, but once you get the hang of it you can rip DVDs into nearly any format (it includes nandub which converts movies to Divx too!).

Since I do not have a DVD drive on this comp, a nice feature I really like about Gordian Knot is the auto-detection of Daniel's (my girlfriend's son) network-shared DVD drive - I just popped a DVD in the drive - while he was playing the Hitman2 demo - went back to my comp and began ripping right away... he said he did not notice any lag in his gameplay. I now have a nice Divx verison of all three Mad Max movies on one CD - good video quality too - only took me about 90 minutes per movie to decrypt DVD in .avi/rip English-soundtrack/convert to Divx, and about 25 minutes to burn all three (with Divx player) onto CD.

I don't need no sticking DVDs! (well, as source material only)

I was wondering, most of my divx stuff goes about 10 min then i get an error and it shuts down, i have to reload divx and skip that part or it will error again. Do you have this problem, its not just in divx formatted stuff, anything i play in divx does this, anyone know why?
