Heh, here's an e-mail I received through BYOND pager forwarding (names and addresses edited to protect the "innocent"):

"hey man this is a fan of your game i was wondering if u will sell me your game if so give me a price and we can negotiate if u want to get in contact with me my sn for aim is (removed) and my hotmail address is (removed)"

And here is my reply:

"Well, let's see here... I've worked on DBTC for 15 months now... At an average of 2 hours per day... 15 months is around 450 days (give or take)... 450 days*2 hours/day = 900 hours of work that I've put into the game...

Assuming that I want to be paid at least minimum wage for that work, we'll just say I'd want $6.00/hour... $6 / hour*900 hours = $4,500... Or 45,000 BYONDimes...

That's my final and ONLY selling price... No negotiations... That amount is only fair for the time and effort I've put into the game... It's less than I could have made working at McDonalds for the same amount of time... So you'd actually be getting a deal... Plus, it's a HECK of a lot less than professional game makers get paid to do their jobs, and most professional game makers don't even work on the entire game, just parts of it...

Well? Still interested? If so, I expect the deposit in my wallet before I give you the source..."

Think I've got a deal? lol
yeah...so whats the point of this again?

The point is that reality is funny.

Uhh... To show the stupidity of some BYONDers?
In response to Kunark
It's a lame attempt to doom DBTC to the same fate as Dragonball Zeta.. >_>
You think you're going to get paid $6 an hour for your work on a byond game? You'd be lucky to get $0.50 an hour. This is not a part-time job at a company. And payment would most likely not be based on how much time you put it into, but how much detail the game has. I would pay more money for a good game that took 50 hours to make than a mediocre game that took 200 hours to make. The final product is everything. Good luck.

Unfortunately, he didn't go for it... His response was that he hadn't noticed the recent update, and thought that I had abandonned the game...but definitely didn't want to pay that much for it...lol

As for the point of this post, it is both of the things mentioned below by Kunark and Triste, but also as a commentary on the practice of game source selling and buying... For one, it really shouldn't be done for the relative pennies (err, dimes) that most people do it for... And two, if someone needs to buy a source to have a game, then they obviously lack the ability to improve upon that source (otherwise, they'd have coded their own) and will end up claiming your work as theirs (regardless of "credits" in-game or in the game description) and adding a Donate verb to earn money off of your work... Or worse, selling the source out to others a la Zeta... (I'm too lazy to go to the character map to get the properly accented "a" for that...lol)

And three, it's to illustrate that no one's ever going to get the source to DBTC... Unless anyone's willing and able to pay at least that much (which virtually includes no one, so I'm safe in that respect)

I know all that... The numbers I used were pretty much only to inflate the final price with decently logical reasoning... Not exactly realistic reasoning, but it at least makes sense...

The reality is that I don't really expect to get that much (or anywhere near that much)...it was basically to scare them off...lol

But more than that, the point is that I'm not selling...lol

"Off Topic", I wouldn't sell the B&N source code, even for $50000 =P

I'm pretty sure you would. :)
In response to Triste
I'm pretty sure that for $50,000, I'd sell not only DBTC, but everything else on my computer, too...lol

After all, honor and pride are strong forces, but they won't keep you fed and clothed...lol

I still mooch off my parents. =P
In response to Hanns
I do too, but it'd be nice to change that...lol

(well, I do still live at home, and mostly eat food provided by my parents... but I pay them rent and such for those priveleges...lol)
