After chatting with some people online, I learned of the following cheap disgraceful hub entries that have most likely screwed up BYOND for a majority of users:
http://www.byond.com/hub/ hub.cgi?qd=hubIndex;hub=7017;channel=620
http://www.byond.com/hub/ hub.cgi?qd=hubIndex;hub=2994;channel=620
http://www.byond.com/hub/ hub.cgi?qd=hubIndex;hub=4370;channel=620
http://www.byond.com/hub/ hub.cgi?qd=hubIndex;hub=8329;channel=620
http://www.byond.com/hub/ hub.cgi?qd=hubIndex;hub=4450;channel=620
...what method of learning do you need to understand that this sort of content is *not* appropriate???
[Mod edit: Agreed on the sentiment, digimouse, but I think it was a bad call to actually post the language in those entries on the forums. I've taken it out. For the rest of you kiddies, it's language that's the problem with those entries. - Lummox JR]
Being nice does not work, being stern does not work, being angry does not work, warning or even banning does not work - shall mods start coming to your house and beating common sense into you?
You people know full well that this stuff is frowned upon, yet you don't care, and do it anyway! You people are darn lucky I'm not a forum or hub mod... It is crap like this that makes me glad I moved from the U.S. You children disgust me. I just hope you grow up and learn to respect what a great system BYOND provided for you, for free! Thanks to you, there is an ever increasing chance that BYOND will no longer be free...
Thanks for screwing it up for the rest of us, jerks...

I have no money myself, but for a hobby which I feel takes a substantial time of life and gives me entertainment is worth saving up a little. If BYOND Professional or whatever would cost $40-60, I believe that would be somewhat reasonable.
And I am not saying that the free version of BYOND be immediately abandoned. It could serve as a fully functional demo, a way to test the commercial software. But updates and development work would only be conducted on the commercial version, and games for the commercial version will be promoted more. So it would still be possible to create great games if you can not afford the price of the commercial version. I believe that is the best comprimise possible. splatty |
I agree with this, BYOND should go professional for those who want to be serious about games.
Byond could become a tool for employers and employees in the gaming market. Early talent could be recognized and initiative could be taken. Also, those who simply lack the talent required to actually code could then hire and legally bind coders to do contract work for them. for a fee of course. So people could actually be legally protected, AND code professionally on BYOND. Host Professionally Code Professional or even design games and hire people, pay them and get paid by the players. Build your own Net Dream and make sure it doesnt turn into a nightmare. ;) |
Or you could have a filter that checks the hub entries for bad language then, if it finds anything, it rejects the entry and sends a report email to DanTom.
|
Tom is planning for HUB moderators, and possibly pay-to-upload rights in the future.
|
HUB moderators are EvIl! Just have a filter! FILTER FILTER FILTER!!!
If BYOND was pay-to-do-anything then it'd suck and BYOND would lose more than half its viewers! If BYOND had a filter, you could weed out the manky HUB entries, saving on bandwidth and storage space, costing DanTom less cash! FILTER FILTER FILTER!!! |
the idea IS to lose half it's viewers.
(because i would then be able to yank serious programmers and gamers into byond and they wouldnt be scared off by imaturity) Then byond would be larger than it is now ;) |
Hello-o? Let's just settle it at:
BYOND stays free. " gets updated occasionally. BYOND Pro is BYOND, except maybe 3D or something. " is pay to develop/upload/whatever else DanTom wants it to be. " gets updated often. Because I'm fine with that. |
That's more or less exactly what I proposed in another branch of this thread. BYOND should remain free, but a commercial version of BYOND should be created, a BYOND Professional... maybe not with 3D (there are other programs for that), but skinnable Dream Seekers would definately be a plus point in my eye.

yep. I would definately make the jump to BYOND PRO.
Because I dont have the time to code even DM, or even learn it. but I do have the money to invest into the time of a coder or a group of coders to create a few byond games for me. And I have quite a few ideas for byond, quite a few people have seem the starting of a few failed attempts. They arent gone, simply resting. And my creative mind has danced across a few byond games, like Dragon Ball Omega Epik2k and even Draconites Dragon Quest Evolution. |

If some binding agreement (no hate crimes, ect.) was neccessary in order to buy and use BYOND, then DanTom would have real legal tools to go against such cases in the future. What about minors? Wouldn't a contract like this be void if one of the parties is a minor? |
Well, they couldn't fulfill the contract as minors - they'd need express permission from their parents before buying the game.

I think they need to go delete alot of the stuff on the hub right now. Most of it is just pointless. Maybe there should be alot more rules on what you can put on the hub? If byond wasn't free id be gone because im broke :( Maybe I could code for dimes when i get better.

I totally agree with what you're saying here; these people need to be slapped upside the head.
I did however modify your post, because I don't think it's such a hot idea to be posting the language from those entries openly on the forum, even though it does illustrate a point. Those who are morbidly curious can always check them out. Lummox JR |
That's the idea. unfortunately I wont hire coders to program even a byond game who cant be held accountable.
The game would be published under my name, the coders would be my employees. signing a contract making certain that any unlicensed release of code be dealt with harshly. Since there is no protection for people like me on byond thats why im waiting for BYOND PRO.. hopefully dantom will create some. |
Id imagine it would be up to the individual who would go into an agreement with that person.
Id personally prefer if there was some way to authenticate age on the internet without releasing personal information,.. Until then we simply have to take everyones word for it. And if the child claims to be 16-18 (legal age in canada for contracts is 16) then they would be commiting fraud, a crime they CAN be held accountable for, even if they are young offenders. And as a deterrent.. the governments of both America and Canada are really starting to crack down on internet crimes despite age. So by all means call their bluff. ((added)) Also, another useful tool to add to BYOND PRO are fully written agreements where the participants can sign electronically with their pagername signatures BYOND PRO keeps a copy, and the participants keep a copy. This would be sweet, but the effectiveness of it will hopefully never need to be seen. |
Hey, you know how I feel now! I don't get why some/most kids on BYOND just don't get it.
LummoxJR said the problem was the language in the hub entries. Well, I think as themselves are horrible. Why can't these people act half way decent instead of being greedy morons? Digitalmouse, You also said "It is crap like this that makes me glad I moved from the U.S.". Well, I don't think that everyone in the US is like that... but there sure are a lot of these morons! Why, the other day I had kids making fun of me because I wear dark clothing and I don't act happy all of the time. And one kid actually threw a sticky piece of gum at me, and it stuck to my clothing... >=( I'm getting sick of everyone... these bastards that don't even have a conscience. Sure, I've done some horrible things in my past... but I would never dehumanize another human being just because of the clothes they wear, what race they are, or because they act and look different in general. Well, there's my ranting and raving for today... I just wish BYOND would work together as a community to make it a better place. [edit] I also agree with digitalmouse and LummoxJR, we should go to these [explitive deleted]'s houses and beat the living [explitive deleted] out of them! [/edit] Use some common sense, people. |
If some binding agreement (no hate crimes, ect.) was neccessary in order to buy and use BYOND, then DanTom would have real legal tools to go against such cases in the future.
Added to the improved professionality of a commercial BYOND, I think the BYOND community would "grow up", not in the sense of actual age, but in sense of "maturity", which I also agree is lacking in some parts of the BYOND community.
