Egads people! What is wrong with you? This whole community is going to hell. Actually, come to think of it, it has for a while now. Creeps that'll do anything for money, stories corrupt moderators, spammers! That's what comes to mind when I think of BYOND. Don't some of you people even have a trace of dignity? I wish we could all pull together as a community to try to make it a better place! People I have a HUGE respect for is: SuperSaiyanGokuX, digitalmouse. These people I would trust with my life! But everyone else... yeesh. And it is not DanTom's duty to baby us either. So, people, please, try and act like mature adults.

(I realize what I've done in the past is wrong, but I have sworn to be as good of a BYOND citizen as I can from now on)

(Oh, and moderators, I've read the rules over twice, and my post does not violate any rules)

When I think of BYOND, I think of a whiney community, who can't appreciate anything (aside from a handful of decent people). The reason they don't act like mature adults, is that over 80% of the BYOND community is made up of 12 year olds who are not yet mature. I'm not saying all 12 year olds are immature, just most that are infecting BYOND.

Don't some of you people even have a trace of dignity? I wish we could all pull together as a community to try to make it a better place!

Around here, dignity is as sparse as the lack-of DBZ games (In most people, anyway). People spamming because GMs won't give them their gold back when they died, people comming in a game, seeing no 'trade icon' verb, saying it sucks, and leaving.. I too wish that all of this would cease, but there is really nothing we can do about it.

People I have a HUGE respect for is: SuperSaiyanGokuX, digitalmouse. These people I would trust with my life! But everyone else... yeesh.

I don't know SSGX that well, but I would definately trust digitalmouse. He's like another father to me (Poor him). Most of the other people on BYOND are dime-hungry, and would do anything to get some. I really wish people would realize they are BYOND Dimes, not BYOND GoldNuggets.

And it is not DanTom's duty to baby us either. So, people, please, try and act like mature adults.

I agree. Dan and Tom shouldn't have to sit around and watch us, making sure we don't mess up. We should be able to handle everything without calling one-another a 'l00z3r'.

Well said, i would also like to add that i truely think this community would grow a little if just a few more of us planted some seeds. I would like to see open sourced games that anyone can summet mods and impovements too. I was going to do this, but then i lost the project i was working on to use it. It was going to be a MMRPG, and it would have fit that title. But then my hard drive broke and i lost it and everything else byond on my computer. It had a great system for modifieing, adding, and just general stuff like that. In less then 10 min you could add over 20 new peaces of cloths, armor and weapons the same. It was not realeased because i had not finished my combat scripts. I would like to see someone make one of these. But then you do have the problem with people using your code for thier stuff, but that is to be expected.
The BYOND community isnt the greatest place on Earth, but its not that bad.
Creeps that will do anything for money: Its not just BYOND, on average I get 50+ spam e-mails a day, most of which are designed to rip trusting people off.
Stories corrupt moderators: Im not sure what you mean by this.
--Stories of corrupt moderators: Well there are always going to be people who disagree with the ref, and this leads to stories of corruption.
--Corrupt moderators: I dont think so. I cant say for sure since I dont have much to do with moderators, but the moderators I know of probably wouldnt be corrupt. Simply because one of the main reasons they got their status upgraded would have been because they look out for the BYOND community.
Again corruption is a hard thing too prove, but if you organise your case into a nice polite e-mail Im confident that Dantom would listen to it and take what you say into careful consideration. They put a lot of work into building BYOND, they wouldnt let some hothead moderator ruin it simply because they dont want too lose a friend.
Oh, and by nice polite e-mail I dont mean a suck up e-mail, I mean something well written, proof-read and structured. If I seen the subject line "[modname] iz [string of cuss words] ur sit eiz [more cussing]", Id delete it straight away, or at least take it less seriously.
Spammers? In game this would probably come down to how you run your game, the types of people who play it, and how the community views you.
Take Hedgerow Hall.
How it was ran: In my oppinion it was ran a little harshly (LA is a good person, but she can be crabby). This can lead to fights that could easily be avoided, which in turn leads to spamming.
Types of people who played it: This is a pretty big thing as far as spamming goes. It was played by people who where generally "smart". "Smart" people generally dont get upset and yell abuse, spam, ect. They definantly arent the sort too have a mood swing and go from model citizen to flaming moron because of one little thing going wrong.
How the community views you: LA is pretty respected as a Guru. Again her 'crabbyness' has lead to people not liking her, but luckly they tend to stay away from her and her games.
You also missed one thing. People complaining about little things (Or things that cant be fixed) constantly. This really causes a negative attitude. If Im reminded how much this sucks, and how much that sucks every five minutes Im going to start to get into a negative state of mind.
Anyway, those are just my views on what you said.

PS: Sorry to LA if I offended you by calling you crabby.

[Edit] Oh yeah. I missed one point. When you say 'Try and act like mature adults' you forget that not everyone here is an adult. There are lots of kiddies on the BYOND forums. Some are very mature, and some arent.

I was hoping to go this direction with my maze, but only two people have taken up the challenge. I even made an 'additions' channel, that you can submit your graphics, add-ons, or whatever you wanted to.

I myself even made a 3D tag game, to try to get the ball rolling. Obviously, nothing worked.

~>Volte
I hear you, but I wouldn't worry too much. Some of your concerns are just the way of the world -- there will always be people who like to cause trouble, and people who interested in hosting a game just for the thrill of booting people out of it, and it's worth remembering that people (myself included) will almost always have a tendency to romanticize the "good old days" and see current events in a dimmer light. On the other hand, some of your concerns are things that can be improved, and some of those are things that Dantom is thinking about and working on right now. Just hang in there! :)
Well, dracon.. Ive been trying to get a few trustworthy coders to work on a game but they don't trust eachother.

Well hell, its my god damn idea and story so if it's ripped off then who loses out?

That's right.

hear that byond community? some of you are great coders.. and have good game ideas, but the balance is nauseating and the gameplay: repetitive.

No game made on byond is of true quality right now. not true MMORPG anyway.. (btw this is what im talking about MMORPGS)

Morte needs alot of work yet shows promise, however.. the current road it is heading is a dead end. it needs more indepth trade skills and be more friendly to players who do not want to develope their characters through fighting. Otherwise Morte will be nothing more than an online adventure genre wrongfully hugging the title of RPG.

This goes for all these so called RPGs on byond. if it's entirely combat focused.. squash it. think about other ways to have characters develope themselves and think about adding skills and some limitations.

In response to Volte
Muahahahahahahah! But you can't see! For they are BYOND gold nuggets and I must have them all!!! No one can stop me!

Ok sorry 'bout that, but in all truth I, myself, will only care about BYOND Dimes if they reward me even more for my efforts then getting a game done and out. I have pretty much lost the interest in making any money at all from BYOND (I've made $93 dollars so far) so thats pretty much enough. Though I was never dime hungry, I've never dismissed people giving me them :P For now though I don't even think I will put a donate verb into my newer games anymore :P

The thing is, is that the BYOND community hasn't gone to hell, it has just gotten bigger. Any smaller community is peaceful at first, but like any community, you increase the population, and you going to get a minority of people who like causing trouble.
In response to Scoobert
sorry, I would have created at least a small game by now if I ever had the time,

here is a summary of my life the last few months.

A++ certification didn't work out so I continue my high school.

SURPRISE You are gonna be a father.. YIPPEE!! a farting mouth to feed on top of it all.

NOW!! I have to sit down and think about what to do next since I have all these plans.. I have to change some plans around and this is how I think at all times..

So, I want to be a multi-billionaire and own telephone companies, software and hardware companies, and all that.. well money has to come from money,... but how to generate those kinds of funds??...

I need to finish my education to have a better shot at employment. So check!!

I need to acquire training in order to increase chances of receiving employment in a job that I suit.. Security Guard!

alright.. so.. realistically the child will have come by now, and that's not going to be easy. So I'll write my stories on the side whenever I have spare time.. During this time I'll save up money to purchase a computer and programs and educate myself into webpage designing, and webhosting.. Certainly no shortage of need for these services!! So.. my spare time is literally drained now!!! So where would I be at this time?

Me and my girlfriend would be raising the child, I would be working afternoons or nights, when I get home my girlfriend catches a few winks while I watch the child. I fall asleep when she wakes up (during the time I watch the child I would be writing my screenplays or learning more on webpage design from books.. and learn more about computers in order to host webspace. Whatever spare time I have I would do some housework and bring the child to family.

So.. educating myself raising a child and working! this will be hard but I'll do it.. other people do less and where does it get them?

So where then? well.. the webhosting gig should do well if not.. oh well. if it does better than I hope, id leave the security guard job. and work more from home. This would give me more spare time with the family and writing.

So what after that? NO EASY TASK!!!

business plans, licensing, research in all facets of entreprenuership in the regards of game designing.. this step would also include learning to program.. otherwise thats more money from my pocket (and loan) I'd hire programmers to create an original game engine.. this would take a considerable loan. possibly even corporate sponsorship.. but regardless of what byond sees in me, my charm skyrockets when I paint the full picture. When I speak I usually leave out key ingredients to a topic which leads to arguments..

Either way.. when I reach each of these milestones.. my situation will be re-evaluated and different ideas will come to mind. I'm never without ideas.

Sorry about all this but I just started writing... and couldn't stop.

I have an odd sort of respect for you Dareb, sometimes, you seem like a total asshole, others, you don't seem so bad anymore. You've seemed better lately, I hope you can keep it up. The BYOND community needs to stick together, great things could come of it. There are lots of problems, and those problems are inherent with anything like this type of community, but I don't think its something we can't handle, if we just all gained some maturity.

Nothing great will ever come from this if no one ever makes that effort. We must all take part, for the community is made up of all of us. Theres a sad few number of people that I trust, I'm not going to list them, but I'm sure they can figure it out. Teamwork, we just need teamwork.

Weather you consider them RPG's or not, they are still games that some people like to play. Entirely combat focused RPG's are great, they usually dont work once you throw the word multiplayer in there though.
One thing you have to remember though. BYOND games will probably never be world class games. BYONDers are amature game makers (Although we have some very good, almost pro teams out there).
Its unfair to demand perfection from people who are out too enjoy themselves.
As far as trustworthy coders go, just make a team out of your friends. Your team will never trust a someone who they dont know, and for good reason too.
They will lose all the work they put into the project as well. Just because you lose more doesnt make there loss less. (Too many L words... I sound like Mike Brady :P)
In response to Scoobert
I'll do shameless promotion... of a project that isn't mine.

CAGE
LockedInACAGE

Lots of people should contribute to that.
Why do you come in every 3 months and make a post like this? I can recall you saying this exact thing several times before. BYOND is doing fine; much better than it was when I first came here. Keep your unfounded opinions to yourself.
In response to Dareb
Well then, let's go take all of the games that don't conform to your standards of what a MMORPG should be like and remove them from the hub.

You shouldn't be so quick to say "this is the way it should be, and if it isn't this way then it's wrong." Apart from being ignorant, it's kind of annoying.

I don't play that game for a reason ;)

It has been created well.. but let's face it.. It's a strategy.
In response to SilkWizard
What are you talking about?

Im just saying that right now BYOND Needs a multi-genre game. A game that includes elements of Sports, Simulation, Adventure, Puzzle, Strategy, and RPG.

When I said squash it, I meant put it on hold, put it aside and work towards this type of game.

People have been brainwashed with these combat only games.. they aren't fun.. they are challenging.. and if you derive fun from being challenged, so be it. But at least do yourself a favour and admit to yourself that the game is fun because it's challenging.. and probably just that.

One problem game developers on BYOND, even professional game developers is that they don't take games very seriously so they can never be serious.

You make this type of game I'm talking about and more people will flock to BYOND. advertise it like that Dreamoor game which to my knowledge hasnt moved an inch.

You make this type of game and hundreds of thousands of to be game players/addicts would flock to that webpage just by word of mouth.

You see, people on Byond haven't taken game design very seriously. So anybody out there who come in here and see what games have been designed will also not take them seriously.

Im stressing my opinion here because all combat only games are relatively the same.. regardless of graphics. El Kardian, Shadowbane, EverQuest, Priston Tales, Nexus TK, Dark Ages, Dark Ages of Camelot, are all the same on a realistic scale.

leveling, fighting monsters. what else? quests? about fighting monsters.....see? of course you don't if you don't get it now you never will.

Well, enjoy the web. (not the electronic one)

If I find a game to be fun, I usually don't look for a deep meaning behind why it's fun. Nor do 99% of the people who play games. It has nothing to do with being brainwashed...the way that you are talking, having any sort of challenge in a game is a bad thing.

One problem game developers on BYOND, even professional game developers is that they don't take games very seriously so they can never be serious.

I don't understand how taking games seriously translates into making a fun game. Explain to me what the benefit of a game being "serious" is.

Once again, there isn't just one type of "magic game" that will draw every single gamer in to BYOND. Some people prefer action, others prefer Adventures/RPGs in the style of Diablo 2 or Everquest, and some prefer the type of game that you are referring to. Personally, I hate full blown roleplaying games like the one you are suggesting that everyone here should up and create.

Well, considering that some of those games have been wildly successful, I don't see a problem. Who cares if they are based upon gaining experience and collecting items; if that's what people want to play, they'll play it.

I think that Hedgerow Hall meets with your standards of pyscotic roleplaying, or at least comes close...what's your problem with that game?
In response to SilkWizard
The problem with hedgerow hall is that its not serious --- not realistic enough.

It also does not offer challenges or an interactive community.. Indeed it is a step above the rest but it misses out on some critical game features.

it just offers a community.. nothing else.
Thank you all for sharing your opinions. First, I just have a little "beef" with SilkWizard. Calling my opinion "unfounded" is a bit redundant, don't you think? No one's opinions are ever wrong, unjust, or unfounded. It is their opinion, they are just sharing what is on their mind or what they believe.

Okay, back to the matter at hand. I guess what ticked me off again to post this is after searching the community for a bit, to find little good in the community. Oldies treating newbies badly instead of helping them, BYONDime worshiping creeps, and recently I've gotten many threats to have my sprites to my new game stolen! And the game is barely into the Beta Stage! Of course, I will not mention their name(s), because although I have disrepect for them, I want no harassment to be brought against them.

Gughunter, you are right. No matter what, there are going to be those annoying people that love to cause trouble. Every online community will have them (but some more than others).

Well, there we go, I shared my opinions after drinking a liter of Pepsi.
