So, if BYOND were someday magically turned to pure-MUD, I'd never stick around... Sure, you might be thinking that wouldn't be a big loss, but I'd be willing to say that a lot of the players around here share my opinion, and also would be gone... That'd be a great loss to the community, stemming from a proposed "solution"... (of course, depennding on your perspective, losing a large number of the current BYOND players might actually help, but let's just ignore that point...lol)

BYOND hasn't been advertised to an audience which enjoy text-based games yet, so I'd agree, most of the audience would be gone. I plan to advertise a BYOND-based MUD there soon, so mayby that will change some day. I doubt BYOND would ever revoke its graphical capabilities, infact its text-based are the most lacking right now, I can mention atleast one memleak, and a dozen bugs related to text-based games in BYOND at the moment..

I've noticed that too. BYOND seems so very pointless now, But I don't really think it is totally the communities fault. I believe that its just a matter of you getting older and maturing, and you are starting to realize how ridiculus and pathetic this things that have been going on for the longest really are. I know I am. Thats why I have completely stopped playing BYOND games and have uninstalled it. BYOND has lost it's fantasy element. The vast majority of games are imitations of actually games or TV series, and the real games are much better than anything that could be created on BYOND (no offense to people who work hard on these games, but do you really think BYOND is capable of a game that is up to standards of console games?). I remember a about a year ago my idea of the perfect day was waking up, getting on the PC, punching a bag or meditating for 18 hours in DBZ NN and going on a pointless killing spree, just to wake up the next day and do it again. But since I am getting older I have less time for things like that, and I now see how sad that really is.

(Oh, and moderators, I've read the rules over twice, and my post does not violate any rules)

Yea, but that never stopped them before :-)

Why did you just make two posts in a row? You can edit your posts you know.

I think it falls into the "the expectation of something is better than actually having it" theory. That is, its more fun to imagine you had the ability to create whatever you wanted and have it work online, than it is to actually create whatever you want and have it work online.

(Oh, and another reason I encourage MUDs is because, sparing a few bugs that will hopefully go away, you can create BYOND MUDs that are comparable to MUDs created outside of BYOND.)

Do you know why I wouldn't deserve a third chance? It's because I'm not as immature as I was to do anything idiotic to deserve a third chance. Your comment was rather ignorant.

Maybe not you, and most of the DBZers, but the other 20% sure does. ^_^

Your missing one VERY great point of why you should use BYOND if you wish to make a game... And that point is that if someone wants to create their own game, the rest of the game making utilities out there eather completely suck by giving you no flexibility at all, or require you to make graphics that basicly eather require extremely good graphic making skills, or require you to pay someone else to make them for you. NWN is 3D, but isn't very flexible at all compared to BYOND.

And your saying you have matured out of it, well making stuff on BYOND doesn't have anything to do with maturaty. You hanging out with little kids playing DBZ games doesn't determine your maturity. YOU and your age determine your maturity. Am I immature because even though I am socially accepted, and have a fine life on the side, I like to program games? No. It means I like to program games. Thats all. In fact, telling people that something is immature when it obviously is something used by very mature people, shows signs of immaturaty. The "I can't hang out with that kid because hes unpopular" or "I can't go out with her because shes unpopular" or the "BYOND is immature because alot of immature kids play it, even though they are the part of the community that is looked down apon" are statements that show immaturity.

I rarely get to state my oinion on anything, not just in here, but in life in general. So i'll take advantage of this opportunity.

Well, first of all, I seen a little comment of BYOND being pointless. I feel it to be anything but that. I myself would never had found out just how much I like programming. So without BYOND I may have ended up doing something that I don't really even like. Plus it gave me a pasttime. The only other things I do are listen to music, skateboard, and watch TV/play video games. Ffor the most part, I did nothing constructive. Well, that's all changed because of BYOND. Now I now that's not exactely what was meant by saying it's pointless or whatever it was that was said. Which brings me to this point. Which is that I have found that some of the games made by BYOND have the same features that a lot of Console games have. So BYOND can't be too bad right?

Now about the community, I do find that it is somewhat corrupted, but for the most part it's good. The only proofs I have of the community being corrupted is that I was looked upon like an idiot at coding because some guy wanted to make a game like Final Fantasy Legacy or Legend, whatever the game is called, and I told him that I was learning how to make games like that(the random encounter fighting system) and that if he needed help I could help if given a little time. But he still insisted on acting like I'm an idiot who doesn't know what I'm doing. When he doesn't know how to code at all! But still, I don't find this as bad as a person from an RPGMaker community who wouldn't help make CharSets for me because i accidentaly called them icons. I just think that shows that despite how bad a person may seem, there are worse. About contributions to the community, I have found there to be plenty, considering the amount of people we have that actually CAN contribute to the community. Probably the only thing that could fix this is to simply get BYOND's name out there more and wait for some new people to come in, some will be bad, but there will also be some good that could end up contributing to the BYOND community greatly. Which is why I say that people truely devoted to making the community grow should take a day, instead of looking at the forums or what have you, to just go to websites about onlime gaming and programming and things of the sort and starting getting those links to BYOND up.

Now to the feuds, they just need to stop. In my life I have found it very easy to void any sort of conflicts with others that may arouse. One thing I do is if I know how a person operates so to speak, and we get in a little confrotation, I simply say what they want to hear if I know it will help avoid any major conflict. Instead of getting full of myself and saying what will make the problem get much worse I just be the bigger man. It's kinda hard to explain. I just say the things that will make the person stay calm enough to not escalate the fight but at the same time keep us going our seperate ways. Don't just agree with what they say though, because then they'll still probably want to be your friend afterward and then you've either got to live with them again or try blowing them off which can makes things even worse than what they would be had you gotten into a bad argument.

Well.... I'm tired so I'm going to bed. Hope I shed some light on some of you. Though I seriously doubt that I did.

Heh, I had a feeling that Windows has one built-in, but the operative word in my statement is running... I've never had a Telnet client running on this computer...regardless of whether one is installed or not...lol

Heck, my ISP's connection console has quick launch buttons for various internet-related programs (E-mail, Browser, FTP, etc), and one of them is for a telnet client... The install disc even gave me the option of installing one along with the main program, but I turned that down (no reason to waste space...lol), and have never even bothered to set up that button to run the built-in Windows client...
Ok, I agree with you. Byond's community has been going downhill. Here is what I believe would be the best solution(s).

1. Remove any source code off the hub that you are distributing that is not your own work. It is, after all, copyright infringement to distribute another person's work without their permission. Thats quite a big lawsuit.
2. Any source code that you ARE distributing, make a little snippet in mob/Login() that says something about the game using that code. Also make the programmer aware that if they use the code in any way, shape, or form that this piece of code MUST remain there, or they may not use it at all. This will keep others from claiming work that isn't theirs.
3. Limit the number of posts on the forums to say...5 every 30 minutes or something. This would not only increase bandwith for Byond (most likely), but it would prevent spamming.
4. If you see someone who is (or claims to be through HUB advertisement) distributing a piece of code that you know is not their own, contact the owner and let them report it to Dantom. Dantom will remove the entry, and most likely punish the person. I have actually reported someone myself, for distributing a ROM file with a HUB entitled "Fast and the Furious Source."
5. If you can't follow the rules, or are only here to piss people off...leave. The community is much better without you. Go spam something else...like your own computer. Wait, thats a waste of CPU time as well. Darn...

Anyway, those are my views. Most of them deal with stealing someone elses work, but thats really probably the biggest issue. Corruptness in GM powers or something is another, but I think we can crack down on that. I have been trying with my new GM Log System.

Puh-leeze. Five every half hour? I browse the entire forum in about that time, and I make many more than five posts during that time. One every 30 seconds, at least.

Why not? It's easy to see that I make a fair amount of posts. Just search the forums.

Not one every 30 seconds, though - that was just the limit I was suggesting, were there to be a limit. =)

This is a one time warning. Keep this thread civil.

If you want to discuss the BYOND community, that's fine. But do so in a manner where you do not break community standards, and devolve into a state of constant flaming, or I will axe the thread.

Personal grievances should be kept personal.

Thank you,

instead of a "Zeta" plague, we would have a "MUD" plague... I sure dont see any difference...

1) BYOND is too centralized. It would be better if people went and created their own communities around specific topics, such as MUD building, instead of staying at the central BYOND.com location. DWO did this, why can't everyone else?
Maybe everybody else can't?

The BYOND forums here are really just a place where people of a huge variety of different, conflicting interests merge together to bicker, argue, and flame each other out. At least, that's what we'd see if it weren't for the moderators. While there are decent descussions, there's really no reason for anyone to be here.
Um... I dissagree, i have learned lots of stuff about coding since a came on this forum...

Or, of course, we could always just ditch computers and get lives.
Never!!!!!

And if all that fails, the alternative solution to everything is Salsa!
Says who? :)
