What does everyone here think the best multiplayer game is? I would have to say Unreal Tournament by far, no tactics or anything just a free for all killing spree, now thats what I call fun.

I dont like UT, to simple, mostly the one with the fastest computer and the best stereo wins(what with 3D sound and all). Little skill even, i went in, i would win a lot, lose a lot. Im not saying there arnt any good players, just that it's not that specail. The CnC(command and conquer) games were good and fun. Lots of tactics and such. I was very good at it, but would run into people who could stomp me like a bug on a rug. I once played a game for about 6 hours, that was long and complicated, i lost, but it actualy lasted for 2 days, it was just broke up. It was CnC RA for the PS, me and a friend linked them up.

I agree with those games, but playing people over the net is just as fun as someone beside you. Often times a lot more difficult. People you dont know are hard to predict. People you know, well, you know them.

I don't which is best but I had a lot of fun playing Super Smash Brothers multiplayer. And a small LAN(5 computer) game of Half life is great fun :). Much more rewarding to be able to hear people cursing at you in person than over the internet. |
I like both Counter-Strike and Battlefield 1942, only because my friends and i always have lans together to play these types of games, and also to play on my friends new 1.5 mb connection to the net, which makes it all the better.

I don't know about the best multiplayer game, but Counter-Strike is totally absorbing,... 0. o

Kujila, I recommend surfing for other half-life modifications, Counter-Strike is not nearly as much fun as some of the other more interesting mods floating about. Heres some links to even better games:
http://www.desertcrisis.com http://www.specialistsmod.net http://www.planethalflife.com/vampire http://www.natural-selection.org http://www.firearmsmod.com Try those out, I can almost gaurentee you'll change your opinion on Counter-Strike(almost). <<>>Kusanagi<<>> |

I prefer DoD myself, it was the best one I've played. Very nice ww2 weapons, good sound effects, good everything.

I was just talking to some a couple freinds first period today, about how Goldeneye is the best game they made for n64. Think about it, anyone who had a nintendo 64 had goldeneye, the gameplay is still unmatched.

no it isnt...halo beat all other FPS in one slice to their 32 bit heads. And for some reason DoD lags unbarably for me. (Ping rates of 1000+ or more)

no it isnt...halo beat all other FPS in one slice to their 32 bit heads. And for some reason DoD lags unbarably for me. (Ping rates of 1000+ or more) A ping has nothing to do with the way the game was programmed. A ping is the time it takes a network packet to make a round trip from one computer to another and nothing more. The game can run poorly over a good network but this is bad implementation and has nothing to do with ping times. |

then why is my ping over a 1000 on the ending screen hmm? ..it could also be the coding..but it doesnt happen for others..or on half life or counter strike or any other CS/HL mod i have....the lag only comes on battles

Unreal Tournament is fun... I can do really well on there... I usually get a really high kill rating... something like umm... godlike I think? And then... I end up getting snuck up on and blow myself and the other person up.

Day of Defeat is always fun because of all that you can do, like set up TNT to tear down nearby walls. Not to mention grenade lobbing, especially when its one thrown at you then you send it back to the enemy.

Thats because your connection is sending more information to you when you see other people and opponents, and it especially starts adding up when gun fire sounds and bullet calculations have to be made.

-And the environment of DoD actually gives the feel of a real battle,...
'Battlefield 1942' feels more like a game than an actual war to me, I think that's why DoD remains popular, even with similar games with superior graphics competing. ~Kujila |
About 3 years ago I would have said Diablo II. The bad thing about games like these is that you end up literally wasting four years of your life on them.. Now I would probably prefer CS. Online gaming among anyone besides my friends normally ends up being a big headache, and I generally try to stay away from that(Battle.net has a serious issue about things like these).

Thats because your connection is sending more information to you when you see other people and opponents, and it especially starts adding up when gun fire sounds and bullet calculations have to be made. If they had server side special effects that would be just bad programming practice. First person shooters tend to just constantly send positional information and make guesses as to where things will be when not recieving data. Which is why when you have a bad connection you may see a person heading one dirction then suddenly pop into a different location. All special effects - animation, particle effects, lighting, sound effects, ect are almost garunteed to be handled client-side thus not contributing to network data in most games since the syncronization of these things aren't importantant to playing the game. If you're seeing a lot it's probably slowing down since your computer can't run it at full speed which has nothing to do with the network. |

The server does have to keep you updated on how the sounds should be heard depending on where the person is firing, thats only if its a 3d sound integrated game(Most are now of days.).

Console and Arcade are the only true multiplayer non-RPG formats, anything where you can't interact with the other player(s) outside of the game isn't multiplayer.
