As of late I have been noticing that the developer.byond.com sub-domain for BYOND has took a serious downfall.
I don't know whether or not it is I who have seen it alone or whether others have noticed it... But, for some odd reason, it takes a while to load pages and such.
Any other site I visit loads within seconds, but this sub-domain has started to go more sluggish than ever.
Has Dantom downgraded to a different server? Or has the original server been taking that much pressure that it has started to show its bruises?
I am not sure on what to say about it, but I would like to know whether or not anyone has actually noticed this besides myself.
If it is nothing to do with Dantoms side, then I am wondering why the hell it should be like this with me :S

I notice the sluggishness at times, but that is usually at peak times of the day when most people are on. At the moment, at 11am on a Sunday morning, all the pages are loading for me within a few 10ths of a second.
|
I haven't thought about it until I saw this post, but now that I think about it, this site's speed of loading has been driving me crazy :)
|
Maybe, like Lod said, it's when many people are online at developer.byond.com? Right now on a 56k, things seem to be loading fairly fast :-)

(GMT) It has been doing it everytime I have visted; developer.byond.com Today, the times I have been on are roughly around; 10am, 1pm, 5pm, 9pm, 11pm, and now. Each roughly estimated time I have been on during today, it has always been sluggish... It just seems to go worse with each visit. --Lee |

Well right now, for me, it's nice and fast.
|
For me, occasionally it'll seem to hit a lag spike or something for a few minutes, then it all settles down and works quite fast.

I've been noticing this happening often, even at odd hours. Definitely seems like it's an issue of processor cycles rather than bandwidth. Most replies to this post, so far, are talking about available bandwidth rather than CPU usage. Could be a change of server or problem with the server. I doubt Dantom has changed hosting companies since byond.com is still handled by the same IP. I imagine (hope) they aren't using a shared hosting situation (DreamHost is notorious for overloading their boxes). If they haven't already, someone with authority should contact technical support at dreamhost.com. This does appear to be a real issue. |

We've been running on the same server for about a year now. The processor load doesn't seem to be frequently high, although I have not monitered that closely (Air Mapster may know more). You might try gathering some diagnostics via 'ping' or 'tracert' (traceroute?) to see if there is a problem with the network. I can forward relevent info onto our contacts at DreamHost.

But, how could it be a problem at DreamHost servers, when it is only happening to a certain few. I'm not saying this isn't the problem, because it could be, I'm just wondering how, at the same time, someone at the developer.byond.com site is going slow and sluggish, while someone else is perfectly fine.

A perfect example of that would be to compare me and Jon88 from last night. I posted at just gone 1:50am and it was just as sluggish as ever, while Jon88 replied with no more than a few seconds after me saying his state was perfectly normal. I don't know what it could be, but, maybe it could either be the "victims" computers connection to this particular server/network/whatever you wanna say it is :P (IE; mine and whoever else attains this problem), or it could actually be a part of the network not handling the "victims" properly? It might also be due to firewalls clashing a little with the connections going to and from this server? I will try it now just in case... If that does seem to be the problem for my experience here, I will post the make and version of the firewall at hand as to which I am using. --Lee |

It's also going a bit slower for me now, too. It should be back to normal in a couple of minutes, though.

Sorry, but I haven't heard of this before so I would like to be informed a little ;) What I gather is that because I live outside of the US I can only connect to BYOND's site through this cross-Atlantic connection, while Jon88 being a US resident he uses the North American network? Not entirely sure but that is why I ask ;) Although I am still having troubles with the sluggishness of the site :( --Lee |

What I gather is that because I live outside of the US I can only connect to BYOND's site through this cross-Atlantic connection, Well, the cross-Atlantic connection is the major bottleneck between Europe and continental North America. I think it consists of several thick cable lines running along the seabed from New York, going around the vicinity of the Arctic Circle, and then "docking" in the vicinity of northwest England. (I'm just guessing on the geography, so don't take my word for it.) There are also sattelite relays to get across the Atlantic, which are used more than the cross-Atlantic cable these days, considering they're a lot faster. while Jon88 being a US resident he uses the North American network? Jon88 is Canadian. =) |

Yep, so I have less lag than you(to places in NA, on average), and more than someone who actually lives in the US. There's only about two points where the canadian portion of the internet connects to the US.

Most web servers running at a hosting company host more than a few sites/services. Say on one of these newly setup sites to that server includes a very inefficient script/background daemon/app/whatever that is being accessed by a web based front end by visitors to that site. Every time this poorly written program is executed the server's processor becomes overload for a few seconds. On a low traffic site using the cycle hogging program, the server will experience this problem on an infrequent basis. A noticeable pause would only be noticed by the visitor who happens to load another page at the same time the CPU becomes bogged down. |
