hay i notice that in some games GM's have like the best items in the game i was thinking is that right ? shouldent they just have like powers to help what what a GM's for most whant it to get what ever they whant well...i tink i gm should only have like summon and teleport so he can help you out but even thin i could make a /stuck cammand to get people unstuck .... if i lost you what i ment is in games GM's got to much power sure there a GM but i think they should be a normal player with speicel abilties just to help not to cheat they should go tho the game like every one else you all agree ? just wondering.....thank you for your time

Well here is my opinion on GMs as a whole.
The best game is WITHOUT a GM at all. Everything is automated, if they can do it on a MUSH they should be able to do it on Byond. Again, in my opinion. Secondly, GMs, at least in my exp. are people who worked on the game to begin with, they know just about everything about the game! So they usually dont even play the game, they sit on there and chat and moderate. So I think its fine if they have special items that players cannot get. As long as they dont start giving their equipment away. But that poses another problem, on a number of games I played, some how players got hold of GM equipment, without GMs even knowing. So how they hell do they get hold of this stuff? Players can be tricky actually... lol, damn them. So in the end, youll get screwed anyways.. So just go with the flow.. |
I don't think GMs should even have powers to "help" players... if the game is a serious roleplaying game, that wrecks the atmosphere, and if it's like a strategy or other goal based game, that's cheating. Answering questions is one thing... but manipulating the game and changing things around... why is that necessary?
GM powers to administrate the game can be necessary to prevent players from abusing bugs, crashing servers, or just disrupting the game, but other than that... if the GM has special powers, that changes the game into a completely different game... a game where the GM is the only player and everyone else is just playing pieces. |

With the development of a good anit cheating code. You can auto report cheaters then if they don't report the bug. You can have a little talk with them *cracks fingers*.
:) you tell him Ms. hedge I agree. Gm's arnt that much needed in a good debuggable self game. Then again giving your self powers I dont think would hurt any thing just as long as you kept it secret from every one else. hehehe |

The actual powers a GM should be decided on a game to game basis. Also, a lot of environment manipulation stuff is meant to be used as a reward or punishment system. It's not right for every game, but in a game where power gamers make the majority of the crowd a simple 100 EXP boost can be a great motivator.
I like these on top of the normal moderator commands in an RPG: Serious Roleplaying: A GM has as much power as fate. (You can set it up so that events will occur, but you can't outright change the world) Hack n' Slash: You have the power of fate, but you also have some god-like power (Creation of something from nothing, moving mountians with a flick of the wrist, only the god-like commands that are useful) Alpha/Beta/Gamma version: Complete god-like abilities, to be used for fixing problems that occur. |

When you make a game and have the ability to give yourself power, why not? http://www.byond.com/docs/guide/preface.html said well in the first sentence of the preface of the blue book, "So you want to play god?"
There are certain perks that should come with being the creator of a game. I agree that handing out "GM" status shouldnt happen and powers should never be abused, but there is always that desire to play god over your creation. Trog |

I put unnecessarily powerful admin commands into most games I make, and give them only to myself. Why? Partly for debugging (you'll never know when you'll need to debug something, even well after release) and partly because, hey, it's my game damnit. I can do what the hell I want to it! =D
Of course, the day I give these powers to anyone else is the day I need to be taken away by the nice men in white coats. =P |

"Law" shouldn't be a problem AI can't fix, although bugs are another story. You should be the only one able to change a player's statistics, and "GMs" should play the role as mere moderators. Thats what I plan on doing with my MMORPG. |

I said absolutely, positvely no such thing even remotely resembling that, but I'm not going to bother repeating myself when anyone who's interested (including yourself) can go back up and just read what I did say.

Yeah, most games give the term GM a bad name.
