I start up my computer and go to internet explorer, The top CD BURNER tray opens and i shrug thinking it's overheating or something. Then wham the CD-ROM drive pops open, Now i know it's not the overheating when i'm spammed by this pop up from this ad i saw a while back, It said
If you're drive(s) opened you have spyware, GET RID OF EM NOW WITH SPY WIPER!
I'm thinking: Dummy, you made it open!
Then it goes beyond the level of crappyness as my wordpad opens and it says:
If wordpad is opened, You have spyware. GET RID OF IT NOW WITH SPY WIPER!
What a bunch of crap eh?

You all diss IE and windows too much.
IE is perfectly fine, just don't be stupid and everything is alright. Get a pop-up blocker, google gives a free one with their nifty IE only toolbar. Blue-screen doesn't exist on XP, get a new computer? I have no problems using IE, all the other browsers are crappy and filled with these plug-ins that ALWAYS try to be helpful, but they aren't. When i'm on the computer, i have it set up so everything LEAVES me ALONE. Period. |

You all diss IE and windows too much. That's because it's got more holes than swiss-cheese (as mentioned elsewhere). It also fails to follow several internationally accepted standards for HTML, Javascript, and CSS, *and* adds bells and whistles that don't exist in other browsers... while the last point in and of itself does not make it bad, it does limit your audience to only those who use IE for the "special effects"- which, I am glad to say, is not the entire world. If I want people to view my website projects *everywhere*, then I need to follow the standards provided so that the website in question is viewable by everyone. If I stuck to what IE can do I would limit my audience. (granted i have had several projects where that was the case) Get a pop-up blocker, google gives a free one with their nifty IE only toolbar. don't need to- mozilla and firebird (also mozilla based) have built in blockers/filters. more convenient, and usually faster than ones you need to install or plug-in. Blue-screen doesn't exist on XP, get a new computer? not entirely true. while it is very, very rare to see it, GTA3 periodically gives me a blue screen of death after playing for a while. mostly likely due to the fact that my laptop only has 256MB RAM. (Pentium 4 2.8Ghz, Windows XP Pro) so :p -otherwise it runs great under XP or Mandrake Linux. ...all the other browsers are crappy and filled with these plug-ins that ALWAYS try to be helpful, but they aren't. hello? there are plugins for *all* browsers to view things like flash/shockwave animations, quicktime videos, 3d-websites, etc. about the only one included with IE is the flash plugin, and at last check it was an old version (new one available on the Flash website i believe). IE uses plugins just like everyone else does. When i'm on the computer, i have it set up so everything LEAVES me ALONE. Period. so do I and millions of other people who use mozilla-based browsers- we just don't have as many security flaws to worry about. |

Check out Safari if you haven't...it's quickly become my favorite. I typically run three browsers at a time, for various reasons...right now it's Safari for my main browsing, Mozilla (Camino) for doing some admin stuff on another key, and Firebird for some web development I'm using. Firebird is nice but definitely not finished (leaves stray pixels around and such). I used to have IE on that list but I dropped it because: no tabbed browsing (I can't use a browser without tabs anymore), and on the Mac it was even buggier and slower than on Windows. Safari has a very nice tab system, though you do need to turn it on in the preferences. |

I've gotten many blue screens on windows, and regularly crash the system.. though I must admit, I DO indeed give the system quite a bashing while i'm developing things ;) As far as getting a popup blocker, Netscape has that built in ;)

Lazier and lazier!
sheesh, you don't even have to do anytihng. Just click a linka nd its installed, boo hoo. and i have never gotten a blue screen, maybe you should stop downloading so much porn? Only "explorer" crashes, and then refreshes itself, no big deal, hardly even does it in the first place. (Maybe like twice a year.) |

It not a matter of laziness at all- just a really nice useful feature that makes browsing faster and more convenient... if you notice, *only* IE-based browsers do not offer tabbed browsing- everyone else does (ok, except for Links/Lynx text browsers). I bet next-generation IE will have it though. :P
And, yes Deadron, I use Safari and Camino on our Macs- very nice, smooth, and fast. Would be nice if Safari came to Windows or Linux... iTunes for Windows runs nice (better than Winamp in many areas), would be cool to see more Mac apps like that ported to Windows or Linux. (MacPlus.org reports that Apple may be porting Safari for Windows- wOOt!) |

I'm thinking the only reason Windows does not crash on you, is that the *only* thing you do is play games and surf- lucky you! Many of us use our machines for more than that on a daily basis, for work and for play. And because of that we experience all the problems that you are spared from.

You know, I'm really tired of you complaining and whining all the time. Every other post contains some rude and obnoxious comment. Why don't you go and work on your attitude before posting something on these forums.

Well, i personally love IE. Its simple and small. I have IE with google tool bar installed and thats it. That takes care of all my unwanted popups(and rarely gets any i want like mozilla used too, im not sure if it still does though). I dont like tabbed browsing, i like having all my IE stuff right there on my task bar. Google has blocked 1132 popups, and i dont think i wanted a single one of them that it blocked(sometimes popups are good, like sites that open in new windows). IE is simple to work, looks nice, and has very little to slow you down from what you really want.

Exactly, scoobert can say what i can't.
And no, i don't jsut use the computer to surf and play, i use it for making my templates (PS7 can crash windows, as reported) and making sites. I have several gigs worth of sites on my HDD and i'm not even slightly slowing down when opening huge PHP or Java files, up to a couple hundred megs or more. Plus i use it to host 4 differnt servers. Where did you get the idea that i just used it to surf and play? |

Well, i personally love IE. Have you ever tried any other browsers? No? Thought not. Its simple Too simple. and small. Small in what way? If you mean that you don't have to install anything else because it comes with Windows, well that's true; but my Mozilla Firebird folder is a mere 17mb. And that's with a whole bunch of plugins and stuff installed. Don't tell me you can't spare 17mb of hard drive space. If you mean that it's fast, you're sadly mistaken. I was content with it until I tried Firebird; then I couldn't go back. Pages just load and new windows seemed to open almost before I told them to. After downloading a page, IE would take a few seconds to render it; Firebird was practically instantaneous. I have IE with google tool bar installed and thats it. That takes care of all my unwanted popups(and rarely gets any i want like mozilla used too, im not sure if it still does though). You can have the popup blocker on or off; when it's on, it blocks all popups (but you can specify exceptions); when it's off, it allows all popups (but again, you can specify exceptions). I've tried several popup blockers, and Firebird's is by far the easiest to use I've seen. I dont like tabbed browsing, i like having all my IE stuff right there on my task bar. Well, if you want to make life harder for yourself I'm not stopping you! Tabbed browsing is a little strange at first, but you quickly get used to it and then you discover you hate surfing without it. If you're used to having them down the bottom of the screen, you can move the tabs to the bottom of the window instead. It's even possible to configure it to always use new windows, if you really hate tabs (no idea why you would though). IE is simple to work So is a rock that you throw at people's heads. =P Anyway, Firebird is simpler. looks nice Hah! You have to be kidding me, I hate it. But Firebird has this wonderful feature called "themes" (basically skins). 81 themes on the official site and growing, plus you can make your own if you want to. and has very little to slow you down from what you really want. Yeah, whatever you want to believe. With IE, it took me about an hour to browse this forum. With Firebird, it takes me 30-45 minutes depending on how much forum traffic there is. The *ONLY* non-internet-connection-related delay I've ever seen with Firebird is when you initially start it up after rebooting the computer; after loading it once, it then loads more quickly when you start it up. And you don't have to wait for new windows (apart from downloading the page of course), because guess what? The program's already loaded! None of this "five grillion copies of IE running at once" stuff. I recommend you at least try the latest verson for a day or two before you diss it. |

Ehh, what the hell do you mean it takes you an hour, or even 30-45 minutes?
It takes about 5 minutes for me to view all of the new posts, reply, and leave. I don't know why it takes you 45 minutes, ....hmm..aol? |
- Edit
I particulary like how these 'popups' (sometimes i allow them for humor) show in a konqueror window with the win9x them on it.. the most hilarrious being the blue-screen window box "oh no, i got a blue screen.. oh wait, that doens't happen on linux!"..
Also, checking my hotmail account, microsoft is so kind to inform me that my browser will be insufficent to check my email, and that i should download IE.. so i click th download button, and all I saw were updates, no way to download IE for linux, so i click continue anyway.. and who knew.. everything works fine :p
