If you're looking for something interesting this morning, do a Google News search for SpaceShipOne. Pretty exciting!

its great that a non-goverment funded space project actually made it, but Im a little worried about the malfunction they were talking about, that caused the ship to roll, that could have caused serious problems, lucky for them they thought ahead and made the backup system.

With something like this I'm guessing luck didn't play much of a part. Anything that could have a backup system would. I've always wondered why Star Trek ships don't have backup phasers. =P "Phasers are down!" "Well then, for eff's sake, get out there in a suit and shoot at them by hand! What are you, stupid?" |
Not yet, at any rate. This wasn't done for the X-Prize (although it appears it could have won it), but as a trial run. They're expected to do another launch in competition for the prize. I'm not quite sure how it works, but they had to do it this way.

I've always wondered why Star Trek ships don't have backup phasers. =P It's the same with StarWars. Technician: "Are you sure you want to put the hyper-drive unit there? I mean, if you put it there even the slightest hit will probably knock it out, reguardless of if the shields deflect the blast." Jedi: "Who's the Jedi Knight here? Me, or you?" Technician: "But it's right next to the engine, and you know how hyper-drive units have a habit of overheating. Why not put it here. It'll be further away from the engines, which means less chance of overheating, they'll be safer from enemy fire, and they'll run much cheaper and more efficiently." *The Jedi taps his light saber* Technician: "<font size="1">Fine, it's your life...</font> Well, where should we put the hyper-drive repair kit?" *Jedi ignites his lightsaber* Jedi: "You just don't know when to shut your mouth." |

I'm not quite sure how it works, but they had to do it this way. It couldn't have counted for the X-Prize, because the prize requires that the spacecraft be able to carry at least 3 people at once, and this run only had one person in it. Quote: Scaled Composites' SpaceShipOne flight on June 21st was not a qualifying ANSARI X PRIZE flight because it only carried the one pilot, without the weight equivalent of two other individuals. This flight was a test flight in preparation for competition flight attempts later this year. -- http://www.xprize.org |
