Building a server

Hello im currently building a server and i was wondering what OS i should buy for it? Windows Server 2003 i was told also its for byond hosting that ill be selling later on so how much ram should i need for say 10+ games and how large should the harddrives be and how many? im asking this because i dont wanna go pay for it then have to upgrade it because its slow.

Download redhat linux and install it on your machine. Linux is great for hosting.

Really there is no reason to waste your money on Server '03 for BYOND hosting... it's really just a stream-lined version of Pro... no use in paying $1000+ for an OS, just get XP pro... Or if your like me and know some one @ a university get 2003 from them :)

Depends on the game. Normally I'd say about 512 MB, but if you're planning to have upwards of 10 games running at once then 1 GB (or even two) would be better. RAM is pretty easy to increase though (provided you don't mix'n'match types and speeds RAM too much - "too much" really depends on the motherboard and RAM), so don't worry too much about it.

and how large should the harddrives be and how many?

I've never seen a BYOND game above a few megabytes. Most are under 1 MB. So basically anything that you can buy these days will do. Unless you're planning to store other things on it; if you're going to run a website on it as well (particularly if you're selling web space with the BYOND hosting) then you'll want more. I shouldn't think you'd need more than, say, 40 GB. Get 80 if you want to be safe. Unless of course you're planning to store ISOs or something on it, in which case the sky's the limit. =)

I would think it depends on what you are hosting. If it's a game that is only for Windows, then you want to get the Windows Server 2k3, which is usually less secure than Linux. For BYOND games and Website Hosting, I would suggest you use Linux, which I am. It is rather easy to learn, especially Debian 4 O/S: Sarge. All you have to do is get the files on CD, pop them into your computer, and it begins teh install, which takes around 10 minutes. From then, you "apt-get install *" everything else you need. You can go to the Debian site for the package lists to apt-get.
Now if you want, you can get Red Hat, which stopped at I think 9, and supposedly won't be making any more new versions. I hope I can help you =D.

In fact, if he is going with the Mercury - 740CFDMx. he should get PC2100 233 MHz memory. Unless he is going to over clock his bus clock speed up to 400Mhz. (which by the way will most likely kill the chip) note that the chip is already over clocked.

For best computer performance the memory should be in sync with the front side bus. And that happens to be 233Mhz. anything more would increase legacy. And degrade performance & stability.

Couldn't he just get something that's a multiple of the clock speed?

Wow, I really need to build my own computer. That stuff is CHEAP and I need one for my windows work (my current windows comp is a family sharing comp. Do you know what its like to have your brother delete your stuff every day)?

Thats what i thought last time, tomarrow there will be the same sale again :P.


It's not haif bad ether, I've buit 2 computers from it :P. the only down side is the powersupply almost sit's the the heatsink.
