What scares you? I mean REALLY, don't give me a "TEH GOVORNMENT" or "The growing amount of DBZ games.". I'm serious. If you were in a creepy strangers house, what is the most disturbing/twisted thing that you can think of that would make you cringe and run, or you wer ein a creepy house and something so terrifying it would actually scare you.
Basically, ideas that disturb you, or things that can happen that can spook you and keep you spooked.
I have already got multiple people saying things happening that they didn't see, or that they hear things in other rooms/lights turning out and thinking something unknown is near, etc. But I also need stuff visible.
I already know murder type things, those aren't too hard, what I need more, is how ghosts could scare you (Considering that ghosts can really do anything with their environment, etc, so oits not always murder stuff.).

Hmm, I seemed to be especially scared of the ghost pic of the white girl with the balmy eyes that is always in the fake ghost pics.
The one you speak of is an especially frightening type too though. For some reason I just don't see how stuff like "Jason", "Freddy", and "Michael" or whatever can be scary. |
Human hides scare me. The thought of seeing a large part of human flesh unattached to a human almost makes me sick. Human parts like foots and arms would not scare me as much as just human skin hanging from the ceilling. Now granted, that is not the thing that I am most scared of, but it would work best for a scary house.

What would really scare me in a game like that is having ghosts and such pop out at unexpected times, much like the movie 'The Sixth Sense.' It would definitley benefit from spooky noises (not childish ghost howls, but human screams) and realistic portrayal of ghosts as actual humans of varying ages. Nothing would scare me more than to see a three year old jump out from behind a wall, face ripped apart, screaming while I'm on my way to make toast.

I don't think Michael himself is scary, just the idea. I was perfectly fine watching all of the Halloween movies, but when I started to think about the idea of it, I couldn't fall asleep for a few days.

Human carcasses, you know, the type where there's bloody and gutty legs and arms and heads hanging from the ceiling. However, if you REALLY want to make users freak out, make a "flashlight" aspect of the game, basically, you can't see anything but 5 tiles length and 3 tiles width ahead of you. Also, making ambient noises, usually freaks out many people too ... not just zombies and ghosts though ... bizzare things. I remember this aspect ... I was playing "Silent Hill 3", and when I was walking down this wall, I heard a cross-laugh between a freakin' hiena and babies joyful, and gleeful laugh. I immediantly dropped the controller and turned off the console ... I took the game back the next day. It isn't just about the MOBs that make an environment scary, it's the environement itself. Ambient noises, such as laughs, groans and stuff helps this matter, but try your best to make things completely out of the ordinary. For example, when you walk in a room, you hear a knife drop, or a door opens, like the time on Silent Hill 3, when I strolled into this room with a bloody bunny rabbit doll, about 3 feet high. This didn't scare me, but right when I turned around I heard a crash, and fall ... the bunny rabbit was hanged and all of this blood was oozing out of its corpse. Sometimes somewhat silly stuff can be very scary, like this. Goodluck on your hunt, Kunark, I've been wishing for a truely scary game on BYOND. |
Things popping out of no where, very fast. I was playing Resident Evil: Directors Cut and I was going down this one hallway, and this dog zombie thing jumped in through a window and scared the hell out of me. >.>

Heinous torture. Someone strung up on a rack I can deal with, but things such as slowly removing fingers with a dull blade I just can't stomach. For me, it's the pain/psychological aspect of it. Ironically, since I have such a high tolerance for pain, I fear pain the most. Pain and helplessnes. Drowning/asphyxiation/suffocation have to be my all-time worst feared ways of death.

I'll second the extreme fear of helplessness, but that wouldn't work out well in a game.
"Wow, I'm drowning." "Wow. I drowned." "Stupid game." |

I consider drowning and suffocation as one of my favorite ways to go. I don't mean I would cause them, but I would rather suffocate than be ran over by a simi-truck. The reason I feel that ways is because drowning and suffocating are two of the most peiceful ways to die. After a short struggle, you loose the power to and slowly fade away, nice and peiceful. But that is just my opinion.

Because, drowning and suffocation isn't exactly quick...by time you die, you've already felt your vital organs beginning to shut down do to lack of oxygen (mainly the heart & lungs). Take it from me, I've suffered partial drowning (passed out while in the ocean), it ain't a way someone wants to die. |

Well, my mom had that happen to her in a public pool, and she said everything went real calm, and slowed down, and then she faded out. Perhaps it varies from person to person, but the pain involved in a truck...

but the pain involved in a truck... If it were a big semi truck cruising down the highway, and you (the schmuck in this story) step right infront of it, you are not very likely going to feel that pain, because death will come instantly. |

Sounds are what scare most people in movies/games/etc. Try watching any movie you consider "scary" without sound. Try playing Silent Hill without the sound.
Sounds create the environment, visuality only enhances the feeling of "scary". Thats not entirely true, but its a basic thing to go by. Sounds set the scene for something "scary" to occur, they allow build-up of adrenaline by proposing through music or ambience that something bad is about to happen (Like an increasingly fast beating of a heart, scary laughs, or music going wonky/scary). Get the sounds right :) |

No, chances are, you would be hurt very badly, and would probably die in about 30 seconds, but doubltful that you would die instantly. And 30 seconds of pain is worce than 2 minutes of drowning.

Halloween and Jason movies were alright, The only thing that bugged me with it, that they ALWAYS walked, and no matter where you went they'd catch up, Kinda dumb, but Oh well, I enjoyed the Movies.
|
For those of you giving me the "sounds", thank you, but I already got that one down.
That's why I said something visual... I should have a very creepy environment away from you, but I'm having trouble with the visual ideas. Oh and I already am planning for a flashlight effect, whoever gave that response :) I think it will be a good effect. |

That is true... Unless it ran over your head... And that is just gruesome :P

Well, disgusting visuals in the BYOND Developer thread tend to frighten me a bit too. Maybe you could add that in.

I guess a gaunt, super skinny ghost shrieking and rushing at me would scare me the most. Like that pic that went around a while back. /shudders
