Ooh-ooh! Make inner-body part motions, such as if you enter one domain, the walls will be a living organ-fest, and it basically is PUMPING blood, you can see it! That's probably creep some people out, it did for me on Silent Hill 3.

I had a few good text games long ago that were pretty terrifying, but I can't recall the titles. No sound, no graphics, just good writing and plenty of imagination. Basically they were interactive horror novels.
Zilal released a BYOND game last year (http://games.byond.com/hub/Zilal/NightFantastic) that was all sound and text, and it was very creepy, though not particularly scary. One way you might enhance the fear factor would be to have the spirit world at a different invisibility level than the rest of the game. You could have an apparatus to let you see into the spirit realm (higher see_invisible) or a beam that allows everyone to see spirits that are within its light. Players could get brief flickers of "spirit sight" from time to time, seeing the restless dead all around them. Dead players could even communicate with others who can see them. If CPU power permits, you could have random wandering spirits the just look creepy and do little else. Some wander aimlessly, some curious ones follow players simply watching them. It would be pretty creepy, walking through a lonely dark hallway and suddenly a spirit sight flicker gives you a glimpse of unseen things moving around you, one of which is following right behind, staring at every little thing you do. |
I think the thought of something scaring me is more frightening than any actual thing I can think of. Not much realy scares me, so I don't think I can give you any details that haven't already been put forth.
I can share with you a dream I had once, though, as some of them are fairly ghastly. Though, not particularly disturbing to myself, I usually think they're really cool. This one takes place in a large mansion on the edge of some little town, that and the fact that it played like a horror movie are why I'm sharing it. I see a lot of my dreams like movies, with myself just a disembodied observer of the events, not a participant. Anwho, this group of people were, for some idiotic reason, exploring, and/or, trapped in this mansion. A lot of freaky things would happen, and fixtures in the house would animate and attempt to harm the group. One of the members was evidently there before, and knew about the house, so it was common knowledge among the group what was going on, and who was responsible. Turns out the guy who owns the house is not only a well-respected doctor in the community, but was also an inventor, psychologist and hypnotheropist. He probably dabbled in other occult practices, but that wasn't the focus of his work. He liked to kidnap people and hypnotize them into a state of blissful ignorance, then he'd store them in his freezer and sell the living tissue fresh off the bone to the locals, who (it was never revealed) either were hypnotized into thinking this was cool, or were just as sick as the doctor. The people he'd kidnap seemed real happy about being butchered up in front of a nice couple. A litle too happy, actually. They loved it. And the doctor loved it, and the people buying the guy's flesh loved it. It was weird. But, the people in the house didn't love it, they just wanted out. Which, they eventually did get. I forgot, or didn't dream about thier escape, I just remember the group outside of the house in the sun. One of them had snagged a packet of "lightener" from the house. It was a black powder that made things lighter, so they would float. It was a strange dream. Just thought I would share it, as it might give you some ideas. ~X |
To anyone reading this post, DONT READ IT AT NIGHT! Im reading it right now and I have alot of windows behind me, rite now im to scared to turn around after thinking about all these freaky things people have said.

Try the original Thief in the middle of an undead level I didn't find that really scary, except the first time one of those ghost things flew at me at a high rate of speed. :P the Silent Hill series, I hear that's pretty scary The third one is best, but if you play, play all of them. I started at SH2, and I was confused until I went back to the first one. An example from SH3... [Don't read if you don't want to spoil any part of the game, although this part isn't really important.] You find this room with a mirror as a wall, and it functions properly. You shoot the mirror, and it starts to bleed. Everything in the reflection looks run-down or torn up, while you look un-deadish. The reflection of you no longer reflects what you're doing, it just stands there. Later on, you have to fight that reflection. ~>Volte |

Then when you play my game you might want to have the lights on :P My game is meant to pray on senses that normal horror movies/games can't pray on, as well as disturb and startle you.

I don't think that "sweat scratches" is some sort of medical term that you can look up...
What he meant was that any scratch on your skin can become irritated by sweat (which usually contains a large amount of salt), and these irritated scratches will get red and puffy... So you could just get a small scratch from your fingernails if you scratch an itch a bit too hard, and when it happens, the scratch is so small that you don't even realize it, or even feel it... But when you sweat, the sweat gets into that tiny scratch and makes it burn, which turns it red and makes it swell (both from the blood that begins to flow to the area to help heal the wound)... It's not really some weird phenomenon, just the ordinary way your body works... |

That would be a little corny for this game.
The mirrors in this game have this bases: "Some say mirrors reflect your soul. If your soul becomes sour, your reflection becomes sour." Mirrors will also be used in other purposes. |

Not bad, except I don't like that you can see perfectly for an entire tile behind yourself. =) It's much more convenient for gameplay purposes, I know, but I think it'd be more effective if you couldn't. You've already got a nice gradient effect going; perhaps the length of the gradient could be extended so it covers most of a tile? Gives a more claustrophic feeling.
Apart from that (plus what Lummox said), it looks pretty good! |

I had it so you couldn't see a tile behind you before, and even though it's a realistic effect, it causes you to not be able to see things attacking you, in which in real life you could at least sense they were near you if they were to attack you. That and the fact that when I was moving around, the object setup makes it so you are constantly using objects as your sideways to it... When I didn't allow it, you had to ALWAYS face the object before doing anything, which got rather annoying.

Could you obscure half the tile, then? That way you can still see what's behind you, and it gives that more realistic and claustrophic feel.

I have a few questions relating the game because after I saw the screenshots I got interested. XD I know it might be too early to ask all of these questions but you might be able to answer SOME of them.
Will this be a multiplayer game? If so, what will be the point of the game? Does it include one level? Are there different teams or will it be Free-for-All? Will there be NPCs if it is a multiplayer game? Do you level up in this game or is it more like an arcade? Will there be a test version? Will there be items and power-ups? If it is multiplayer, will there be different game modes? Can you pick different people to play with? Will there be different classes or something? Can you be a monster or ghost? Can anyone host it? Will there be different objectives? Will there be blood. XD (I think we all know the answer to that question.) Will there be gore? Will it be un-recommended for children? Can you go outside the mansion? Will there be effects never seen before in BYOND? Can you set traps? Are there weapons? Do you plan on releasing it this year? Do you have a staff team or are you working alone? Will there be music? (If so it might disturb the sound effects and be less scary...) Do you need to use stragedies to conquer your foes? Can I be a GM? XD |

Someone seems sensitive about scary things o.o
I watch scary movies and play scary games before I go to sleep and sometimes I get scary thoughts when I'm trying to sleep like as if someone is watching me or my clown toy is saying that he will kill me when I fall asleep which keeps me awake for hours like yesterday I was up until like 4 AM. But those are the only days when I can remember my dreams... usually good dreams... it's wierd because usually I don't remember my dreams. And when I wake up I feel well rested... o.o Anyone else have the same thing? |

I'm not playing scary text games where you are blind again. o.o |

Will this be a multiplayer game? If so, what will be the point of the game? I don't want to give anything away. But it is half multiplayer, half single player... Basically. When it is released you will see what I mean. |
After playing it for a long time you'd figure out the niche's and the ways to prevent that from ever happening (Especially in the last level in one of the 10 scenario's, where you could simply enter a door that leads to a 100-meter fall, and then climb back up without falling), but the AI learned. Every time you hid in a closet, you couldn't reliably hide there again. Every time the scissor-fellow got close, you'd hear the clanking of the scissors and footsteps.
Fun games, got freaked out the first time I played it. Although I never did play Clocktower 2.
