Feral/evil radioactive monkeys if actually done seriously could be scary, but somehow I doubt that's what you meant. =P

having tons of spiders crawling all over me. That actually happened to me once. I was leaning up against the basin in the bathroom, cleaning my teeth, but I hadn't noticed this rather large cloud of just-hatched baby spiders under the basin ... I was wearing shorts, and about partway during cleaning my teeth I felt something on my legs, just under ths shorts. I thought it was just the hairs being blown by the breeze, so I ignored it. So I finished cleaning my teeth. I felt the sensation again and reached down without looking before realising there was actually something there. Luckily, they were really really small ones, of a harmless-to-humans variety. =P |

I didn't read alllllll the posts but I did get through about half.
Some things I find scary... Screaming. Non-Stop screaming coming from a young female as if they are seeing a horror that you can't see. Then, the female tries to kill herself by sticking a spoon handle in her eye. Failing to finish herself off, she runs about the room madly screaming even more but, the spoon is sticking our of her eye socket. More Screaming. ____ Waking up. You feel strange. You feel ill. Your head hurts. After a moment of groaning, you realize your strapped into a chair and cannot move. You notice a glass window that looks into another room as it slowly fades from black to clear. Your eyes squint as they adjust to the light. Through the glass you are surprised to see your mom. She is yelling something while banging on the only door in the small room. She looks very upset. You call to her but your voice is weak. You call again. She turns, walks around a table, and starts to approach the glass window as if she might have heard something. Using what feels like all your energy, you call again. This time you can see the recognition on her face. She calls your name back with a partial look of relief on her face. She is one step away from touching the glass when she stops suddenly and a look of horror now covers her face. She starts to scream at the top of her lungs with her eyes as wide open as they can be. Her arms are dangling at her sides lifeless but she continues to scream. She is staring right at you like she sees a horror that you cannot see. Your scared. You try to calm her down but she won't stop. You yell at the top of your lungs to get her attention but nothing changes. She continues to scream. You try but you can't move... Why is she screaming!?! Your head is starting to ring. From fear. You don't know how much more you can take... just then, you hear some type of loud unlocking noise. The glass window starts to fade. Just before it goes completely black, you see the door behind your mom start to open. She stops screaming immediately and appears perfectly calm. The glass window fades and it is pitch black once more. The screaming begins again but its different this time. The screams are constantly broken by sobbing and gurgling. Then silence. A minute has gone by... maybe ten. Your about to call out to your mom when all of a sudden the bright light starts pouring into the room again. You see your moms silhouette standing right where she was before. As your eyes start to adjust to the light again, you realize the room is covered in blood and so is your mom. She is standing lifeless with her head down. Her arms are still at her sides. You call to her. She doesn't respond. You call to her again. This time she appears to respond. Her body twitches as if she is waking. She lifts her bloody head. Her eyes slowly open. They appear to move towards you and gain focus. Then suddenly as if she sees something horrific again, she begins to scream. Before you can even react to this, she rushes forward and slams face first into the glass window and falls out of sight. Then silence. Your afraid to call to her. You want to but you can't. Your fear and fatigue is so overwhelming you pass out. An interesting question to ask yourself is; What types of fear are there? Which are visual, which are ambient, which are imagined? I bet you could find some white papers on fear which would help you think of things to add into a game. 1. Unknown. (Possibility of monsters, dark caves, partially open closets, and death) 2. Shock (loud scream or boo type of scare) 3. others... It seems as if most games use the Shock type of fear. The slow build up to a zombie or something jumping out from the darkness with a loud noise. The best thing to do is get the player concentrating on navigation or a puzzle. Once the player has spent some time repeating a pattern to solve the "puzzle", insert loud zombie where they are expecting something safe. Imagine a player going from A to B 10 times to fetch a pail of water to solve a puzzle. On the 11th, the zombie jumps out of the well... screaming... tsfreaks |
First thing's first. I'll give you a few suggestions at what's scary (though not quite on the top-ten list of things that scare me.)
- Changes happening when you aren't looking. (I.E. you look in a generally normal room, and turn around because you hear something behind you. Seeing nothing, you look back to the room to see blood all over the walls, or maybe a corpse.) - Multiple subtle, yet scary things happening in a row. - Blood. It's especially scary when it doesn't seem to have any source, or reason to exist. And now for the fears I have. They aren't very handy though, since they're nearly impossible to program. - My WORST fear is simple. Being trapped in an illusionary world, such as a dream. The only way I wouldn't be afraid is if I had a high level of power over it. But I don't control my dreams that well. Luckily, that's the only kind of nightmare I ever have. The rest of my dreams are just weird. :D - Next up is spiders. They're a phobia, and only a phobia. - Finally, dolls and clowns freak me out equally. Just appearence-wise. And stuffed animals dun work; it has to look human. |

- Mannequins. Ever since Silent hill 2 i have been definatly afraid of mannequins and ran down houses/buildings.
- Dimensions and OBE. Dimensions and OBE (Out of body experiences) are definatly something you don't want to mess with. - Completely vanishing towns with fog and snow. - Spiders. - Thing's that move abnormaly. Like on gothica when the chick goes through the wall. See that coming towards you with an oversized butcher knife and i'd be committing Mijin Gakure. Anything else doesn't really scare me. |
Is this for that Roses game?
Ideas: -When the player's back is turned, some kind of movement would appear behind them and move from one corner of the screen to the other. It wouldn't be slow enough to recognize but they would see it out the corner of their eye and be suprised and all like "What? Huh?". -Dolls, a whole room of dolls just sitting there and then they attack or their eyes follow the player. Or just milling around, running from under chairs and tables. I hate porcelian dolls... -Shadows can be twisted and stuff, like some ghost of a little girl but its shadow is like a demon or monster. -Sounds, if you could mess around with the left and right speakers individually and have like unexpected screams. This can bring more out of a scary place. (Not much you can do along the line of horror games with 2D and 32x32 icons, but good luck) |

Heres ONE...
-This ones sort of hard to implement in a game, brushing my teeth or something like that looking in the mirror, when I go to spit the tooth paste out I can't see the mirror for a second, then when I bring my head back up theres a pure white figure behind me in the mirror, wrinkles and no eyes, just..blackness.. I see it raise its hand and try to strike at me, right before the hand is about to hit I turn and see the lights turn off, its pitch black, the door is slamming rapidly and all I hear is screams and footsteps until, silense, and when they turn on I'm fine, I take one last look in the mirror and I'm scratched rappidly all over my face... Just made it up as I go...heh |
Alright, thanks for your ideas guys, but the thread is too big. Let it die now.

So your saying, if foomer was in the game, it would be scary? =p

Not knowing what is happening when something big is happening is scarey. Also, getting stuck in a place where you can't find the way out of alone is frightening.

I'm guessing it'll be something like the user is in a calm room, and suddenly after like 10 seconds, something pops out accompanied by a startling noise of some sort. Or possibly a well lit area that suddenly goes black and then lit again but when its lit theres blood in all the wrong places, meh just some predictions, probably wrong.
