Alright I made a topic about this, when I was trying to buy a computer. I have the computer with me right now, but it's a bit slower than I wanted.
For example, when I tested a game it went pretty slow, I know it's GNOME GUI on linux that slows it down. Digitalmouse told me that 128 RAM was alright, but not enough for the GUI. So I called the local shop, which is where I bought my computer. He was telling me that my computer could only put 512 ram, which I wasn't sure would be enough. I also have a 40 gb HD, which I meant to return...which went over it's return date >.> So i'm sorta stuck with it. I'm planning on installing that soon.
I have a 900 mhz AMD proccesor, and I don't know what motherboard I have exactly >.>, but I know that type 131 ram works...or something like that. So what do you guys this I should do? He's making another computer which should be ready by next Saturday, which is a 1.3 ghz, with 1 gig ram, That will cost me my computer I just bought, plus like $150. I really would prefer to do the upgrades this weekend, and not wait till next weekend. If I waited though, I would get more out of the next computer, for less money.
So what do you guys think I should do?

Heh, I've used a 350 mhz w/ 152 RAM and a 10 GB HD and Windows 98 as a BYOND-server before :)
You might be over-killing here, BYOND really isn't as tough on the Hardware as say, hosting a Half-Life 2 server would be. ~Kujila |
hmm, It might be my OS...I have Linux Fedora 2, and i'm using the GNOME GUI. Also, my cable modem is roughly 5mps (That's pretty fast from what i'm told). When you used it as a server, did you host more than one game at once?

Well that's another thing, I can't seem to figure out how to turn it off, and then be able to get on it when I need to use it because i'm extremly lazy.

If you buy a dell you can get 1024 MB Ram, 80 GB hard drive, monitor, speakers, mouse, CD/RW drive and an AMD 2.2GHZ processor for £369. Find a convertor and get that into dollars. |
That's $460.530..hmm that would mean I would blow 460 bucks away, and still have the other computer on my hands >.>

simple thing to do is keep GNOME, and just get the max amount of RAM you can get for that motherboard. 512MB should do ok, with a 1GB swap file.
as soon as i remember how, i'll show you how to turn off the GUI from loading automatically, and be able to start it/stop it manually when you really need to (though this should be covered in the Fedora manual/forums). |
yeah, I checked the linuxquestions.org fourms, and they really don't have any solution that I could find for Fedora. Another problem I'm having is Apache...it doesn't want to save when I click save in the HTTPD application from the GUI.

First of all, your getting ripped off. 1.2 ghz processers or whatever go from 20-30 bucks a piece. Considering you have a old computer a cheap 256 stick or 512 stick would cost about 40-60 bucks. So, yeah. Your probably paying for labor. But yeah, just upgrade the ram and you'll be fine.
