Well I have some really bad news that gives me personnaly a new perspective on life. Y'know how you think that nothing bad will ever happen to you? Y'know how when you see the news and you hear about something bad you think what are the chances of that. Well the current state that we are in is pissing me off and reality finnaly hit me. My dad lost his job because of our current state of government. Another wonderful thing is that I will have to move because there are no jobs that would appeal to my dad in this area! I'm going to end up moving and this sucks because I am in high school and I dont want to leave at all!
Just out of curiosity I would like to know how real our current day America is doing, has this happened to you?
All responses would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, we just went through a depression. There was one at the end of the 90's, as there usually is following an upswing. Like usual, short-term band-aid was applied and it was so short and slight that not everyone around the country noticed it.

I don't think we're quite in the "last days of Rome" here, but I do think we're on the downward slope. I'm actually not infrequently reminded of Hari Seldon's description of the galactic empire in the first Foundation novel (which was consciously patterned after the historical example of Rome)... the empire was in the middle of a freefall, but few people noticed because everything still seemed so good.

Ah, but remember Rome's "last days" stretched over decades and, arguably, centuries. I saw an interesting comparison between the Roman timeline (condensed to scale) and our own. Roughly, we are somewhere after Claudius, about in the time of Caligula ;-)

Upper Michigan has been hit very hard also, every day, more and more compaines and factories are all right leaving the contunry and going to places were they can pay much less for more work.
Its hard times right now here. We cant heat the upstairs at my house because the gas bill costs too much, just to keep my room above 10 degrees I had to buy a electric space heater to heat my room as it is upstairs. Everyone is being hit hard, I think it may be one of the worst we have seen in the last few years. Right now, I a job is a job, no matter what it is. We have 40 year olds working at Burger King. We even got some 50 year olds doing paper routes, normally in the UP, these jobs would be done by kids, for pocket money. Now pocket money is the fine line between being able to pay your bills, or living under the bridge. Its sad. |
Pah, you all lie.
You Americans are the riches guys in the world! You'd think if America was all poor, then us Brits would be in shambles! But we're fine! There's no "hard times" here. |

don't joke about this, it isn't funny. I'm not. I'm in disbelief. I also don't see how life can be "so bad", that you still have time and money to log onto the BYOND Developer forums and tell me not to joke about it. If you can't pay the heating bills, how the hell are you paying your internet bills? *EDIT* "disbelief" |

It would of sucked if I would have had to leave with only one month left and goto a different school. :*( I miss my old town been there since I was maga little. As for america im sure its just in a slump and will go back up like it always does. Those who compair america current troubles days to the past rome. Should read a little more collage english :P In there they explain some basic logic. All though no matter how much we look like rome. It wouldn't be logical to say america is going to fall just because rome did. And dont say Im wrong about the above because im not :P |

I'm going to end up moving and this sucks because I am in high school and I dont want to leave at all! A few years ago my Dad got laid off. We said in poverty for about two years. We had to sell and/or pawn almost everything we had. We kept the necessities, but that's it. It was a very tough time for us all. Most of the time, we barely ate because of the lack of food. My advice is to move if it will help. Trust me; you don't want to go through that whole thing. During that period my parent's marriage nearly fell apart. I hope things look up for you. ~>Volte |

don't joke about this, it isn't funny. Shades, you must realise it seems America is very rich to poor countries. Personaly I don't like most Americans since they think they own every single thing in my country (yes, even me! no doubt), it appears. I despise these ones in particular. I believe Americans are very, very RICH. Anyways, Darkdemonrad the same thing is happening to me (because of the money situation, here). I am moving, from my home town to some other place I have only been to once before. I know how you feel. |
However, even all the crappy short-term band-aid fixes the government has been trying to do over the years will not truely fix things; and it can only go on for so long.
Did you know that the US government does not even own "the country's" gold anymore? All the gold that once stocked the government's pockets is now owned by the banks and is kept locked away in New Jersey instead of Fort Knox.
What a sad day to be alive, economically speaking. I don't like living in a lie.
