Alot of people use libraries, right? They help everyone on BYOND who has done any type of programming, they cut the programming time, add style to whatever your doing and it's overall helpful.
Now, I've come up with a new programming theory that I hope goes well that could indeed help this community.
"Chronicles". Chronicles are basically a series of libraries that contribute to the setting of game you to accomplish. Very similar to a Engine, but since the engine for BYOND is already here you really can't call it a engine, but a "Chronicle". This is something I'm going to do for the project we all know as Dragonball Online which has gone through alot of troubles. While not including any elements of Dragonball Online but a dynamic RPG "Chronicle", that we could release to this community.
I believe this will make our programming lives easier and improve the overall community of this game. We haven't come up with the name of this chronicle but I will keep everyone here updated on what's going on.
Thank you,
Vakir

No, not like that. It's a collection of libraries to fit an game enviornment. Content won't be there, but the ability to make content will be easier and easier overall. It will have simple to no graphics basically.

I still don't fully grasp what you mean.
Could you explain further? |

I think he's saying combining libraries into like SUPER LIBRARIES with tons of lag lots of coding and useless crap and calling it a chronical.

Um, no, that's not what he's saying at all.
What's with all of the negativism around here, anyway? Just because you don't agree with an idea doesn't mean you have to insult it. |

Seems to me* that he's proposing we have a base for certain types of games that we can implement to create a "standard" so we don't have to program as much.
Yeah, I mean, who cares about variety and originality? * if(prob(0)) |

That really sounds like a good idea, making a "Super Library."
Offtopic - Kholint, it almost makes you seem obsessed with DM, your using the code to like, prove something in your posts? wow..lol.. |

Kholint, you forgot to define those.

What he's proposing is a code base, similar to what BYOND already has, of basic object types without any actual data given to them. People, with a creative and unique idea, can use these "base classes" as a foundation for building their unique game.
For instance, say I want to make a game which features players as animals; the goal of the game is to survive as an animal in a complicated food chain. Players can choose from herbivores, who just wander around and eat plants, finding which ones are nice and good for them, and reproduce; carnivores, who eat herbivores, and figure out which herbivores can kill them, which are easy prey, and which don't have enough meat on them to be worth it; and scavengers, who pick off of kills from carnivores when they have ample opportunity. This game would likely require the following: - Combat System -- have to hunt to survive, have to protect your territory from competing animals, have to defend yourself when attacked. "Weapons" would be hard-coded for animals, like antlers, teeth, etc. - Spells System -- ability to use natural defences, like musk, ink clouds (for water creatures), etc. - Movement System -- some animals can run faster than others, some animals can't swim, some animals can't breathe on land, some animals can dive. - Map Generator System -- for variety. - AI System -- creatures need to be attracted to each other for breeding, players need to worry about other predators, etc. See what I'm getting at? Basic roguelike/RPG elements can be applied into a completely different genre. The Chronicles system only defines the systems: it's up to the developer to tie those systems together into a whole. |

It's not what you think. It's just a bunch of libraries, with premade procs, systems, that would assist your game world. It's not a complete game as you would htink. It's only about 25% of it which is the base and it depends on how that person wants to use it.
Spuzz, that's exactly what I'm talking about. |

Spuzz, I still think a developer should do all those himself- it develops your skills for when there isn't a Superlibrary at hand.

I prefer to do so myself, too, but I can see the merits in the idea.

Maybe it would persuade the DBZ rippers to stop ripping, and to make their own games.
The more I think about it, the more I approve. I take back the scathing insults I used earlier. I say "Go Ahead"! |

I don't. <nub programmer comes in> oooh this game has nice libraries <mixes them all together> <BYOND is now filled with these, and any games included with the "Chronicles" libraries, or a trace are taken off, the same as Zeta.> Dun dun dun. |

There's always going to be someone who's too lazy to make their own game, but in this case, the content of a game that was made exclusively from the Chronicles libraries would be so utterly non-existent that no one would bother to play it unless they were a retarded yak that just recently got out of an insane asylum.
You know. An asylum for animals. |
