In English a few days ago, we were given the assignment of writing a research paper. We were allowed to choose our topic. I chose Medicinal Marijuana. I was wondering, what is everyone's view on Pot and stuff.

If this is like...a bad topic sorry to the mods.

I agree, I have "experimented"; but in a medical way do you think it is appropriate?

hehe. Good old "experimentation"

I think that if someone with cancer, or bad artharites(sp?)
or somthing should be able to use it to ease the pain a bit, because panamax or the other ones wont do much

I agree, if anyone has seen the episode in simpsons when Homer broke his jaw, he started smoking to relieve stress. That is what should be allowed, but I also think it should be legal in general. It is known here, that there is a larger percentage of people that smoke weed in the states, then in like Amsterdam where it is like legal.

*goes to amsterdam*

I think its legal in Canberra (The capital of Aust)

I think homer went to far but.

I've always heard stories of how people swear by marijuna helping them through a disease or sickness. It's not as horrible as many of the other drugs out there, and it only has damaging effects over a long period of time smoking every day.
What I'm curious about with the "medicinal" version is... why is smoking the only way to get its supposed curative properties? I suppose it might be difficult to get funding to develop a safer, more controlled delivery system that gives you a precise dose (pill, inhaler, etc.) when the federal government still regards as it as an illegal drug... but on the other hand, would the feds have as much to say about it if somebody took the chemicals that make it work, developed it as a pill, and went through the proper channels with FDA testing?

From here:

'With a legal synthetic marijuana pill already available, why are people still pushing for the right to smoke marijuana for medical purposes? Because patients and doctors assert that the two do not behave the same in the body. And a convincing body of research, some of it now nearly two decades old, shows that smoked marijuana suppresses nausea better than Marinol pills, and with fewer side effects. Physicians speculate that one reason for the difference is that smoked marijuana enters the bloodstream almost instantaneously, allowing patients to control their dose, whereas the oral version is absorbed slowly for some time. In addition, there's the possibility that the complex mix of compounds in whole, smoked marijuana somehow counteracts the more unpleasant effects of pure THC, such as extreme dizziness and unsteady gait.'

That supposedly comes from Consumer Reports, but their web site only has a four year archive and that article is from 1997.

I disgaree with drugs in any way, shape or form.

I have a full, happy, intresting life, with lots to do, yet I live in a abusive household and has had to deal with a number of things. Im sure others have had to do. Hell last year I used to wake up screaming. Yet I have never feel inclided to use drugs to ever feel better, or get away from things. Hell I barely even take Advil.

The thing that irks me the most is people using excuses like cancer and stuff for the use of Pot. And thats all it is for me, is an excuse. I hated my step dad, he was a physaclly and mentally abusive, retired drill sargent, but he eventally caught cancer when he went to Panama to build a school house. Apperetnly he got spores in his lungs, and his smoking triggered some sort of effect...

Anyways, the cancer spread, it spread alot, in his brain, in his lungs, all over the place. And the first thing the damn doctors at our local Hospital did was offer him Med. Marijuna. And the one thing I can say I respected him for was that he refused it, he actully refused it a number of times. Instead he a 3 a day morph. pill and a small side mophine IV bag he kept on his waist.

He lived fine up to his last days when he finally had to bring him to the hospital.

I know, I understand some others views, Morphine, other medicial drugs, well, they are STILL drugs. But to me, they are not nearly in the same sense as Pot or Coke, or anything else might be.

I do not agree with drugs in any sense, and I have 0 respect for people who have even experminted, because they have never given me ONE good reason why they even tried them. Thats like asking the guy who found out licking frogs would give you a buzz why he licked frogs in the first place to begin with. I bet you he wont have a good answer.

See, most people misunderstand pot, and why people smoke it. Well, some people smoke it for a very wide range of reasons. But I think the best reason is for whatever that person wants. Personally, i do it because it was helping me with my A.D.H.D and being Hyper and all. It made me calm and understand more aspects of life. It got rid of my cares, worries, it was like a place to go after you deserved a reward. The thing about weed is the fact that if you actually control how often you smoke it, it won't ever harm your body.

You may "disagree" with it, but you still haven't tried it, or have any experiences with it. You wouldn't understand from a personal view! ^^
Here's an interesting post by the lawyer who represented the pro-medical-marijuana side in the recent Supreme Court hearing. The case could have much more far-reaching effects than the medical marijuana question:

It's also worth reading the article this link refers to: http://www.nationalreview.com/adler/adler200412010837.asp. The author is a professor at Case Western Reserve. Hooray for Cleveland!

Marijuana and Cocain aren't in the same league either. For one, Marijuana isn't addictive like Cocain, especially in it's rocked form, more commonly refered to as Crack. Crack is so addictive that people who are hooked on it will do just about anything to get more. The high only lasts about twenty minutes, but the cravings last for hours. I knew a girl who would rob her own mother to get more.

Crack addicts will sell themselves to the nastiest people you'd ever meet for the promise of a piece. The same can't be said about Marijuana. You don't hear about people under the influence of Marijuana killing someone over a hit, but Cocain addicts do it frequently.

You also won't find potheads ripping up the rugs looking for small green bits they "know" is pot. They don't rob their friends and families to buy pot, and I have yet to hear of one Marijuana-related casualty, but the death toll for Cocain-related fatalities rivals that of any other drug to date.

Marijuana has been called The Gateway Drug, but the statistics have shown, and people I have spoken with and known, tell me that alchohol was what lead them to harder things. Alchohol is a drug too. It's addictive and damaging to the body. People waste away on alchohol and Cocain, not Marijuana. Smoking pot won't turn you into a monster, it'll just make you giggle and sleepy.

And smoking it is probably the worste part about it. The smoke, like any smoke, is bad for your health. But, the same can be said about cigarettes. The only difference between the two is cigarettes are a mild stimulant, while pot is a moderate depressant. Injesting Marijuana has not been proven harmful, and it's probably the safest way to take it.

The legal system is what's wrong with Marijuana. The fact that it's illegal to use, posses, grow and distribute has given law enforcement an easy target to arrest. Many good people are locked away for possesing Marijuana, with no prior convictions, histories of violent behavior or even intent to distribute. If it was made legal, cops wouldn't be able to search people for having a rolling paper, like they can now. Some states even make possesion of a single seed a felony offence, even though the seeds are not the drug, and they have legal uses outside of getting high.

I'll have to disagree with you there. I know plenty of people who were generally nice and easy going people, and then starting smoking pot. After that, they started getting violent, rude, and interested in other illegal activities (theft, mostly).

My best friend went through this, sadly. His brother always stole from their mother to get money to get more. A drug is a drug; I can't stand any of them.

That's most likely because they were bad people anyway.

I smoke, and let me tell you. I still stand in my position against alcohol and all other drugs. I refuse too do them and would never think differently. Pot is definatly one big piece of american history. All of our ansestors did it, so why is it illegal now? Countries could be trading it as wealth, and growing money to surrport there small communities. I'm sure america could find millions of ways to make money off of legal pot!

Think of it people!

Did you not read my post? I said they were good people. I knew them personally. :P

Even after they quit (the ones who did, anyway), they still acted goofy. I don't care how many people tell me how 'safe' or 'cool' it is, I'm always against it.

I find that hard to believe. I've never known pot to make anyone violent, and I've known litereally hundreds of potheads. Sure, some were violent, but they were violent by their nature, or because of the environtment they were in. I could possibly beleive the stealing part, but I can assure you that the action was not addiction-related. Marijuana is simply not adictive. Of course, any drug affects people if different ways, and certain people with mental or emotional disorders will be more affected by drugs than healthy individuals. Do note, I'm not advocating the use of Marijuana, I'm just pointing out that pot and cocain aren't cut from the same stone. On the scale of things, Marijuana is less harmful than alchohol, cigarettes are actually more addictive than cocain. They just happen to be legal, so people don't see them as wrong.

No, i'm telling you they were probably bad people if Marijuna led them to any stronger drug. What i mean by bad people is the simple fact that they can't retain enough self will to control the drugs that they get led onto. It's their fault if they lead themselves, or let anyone else lead them. Sad!

It didn't. That's how far their addiction went -- and yes, it was an addiction. They always talked about it, even when I didn't want to hear it.

My best friend even said after his whole ordeal with smoking, his memory and thinking skills have declined significantly. That's more than enough proof for me.

I think cigarettes are disgusting and for one don't understand why anyone smoked them. I use to smoke when I was 14-15, and I don't know why I did. They're just used to kill off the population, and supply the snack corporation with money. Not only that, they're really bad for your health. Besides giving you some different forms of cancer in random areas, but it can destroy how well you breath, and your maximum lung capacity.
