I'm making a MUD and am wondering which way would be best to have a system to bury items.
I was thinking maybe a grid system.

i.e :
Average Joe finds a magical sword far away from his home. He doesn't have enough room to carry it home, so he digs four feet from the cave he finds it in, and four feet south of the the cave. He digs about four feet down into the ground, hides it there, and writes the coordinates on a piece of paper, which takes considerably less space in his inventory.

Average Joe dies from a horrible giant rat encounter. His favorite cousin, BillyBob, gets his will, which is a piece of paper that has the location of his sword.

Just an example i thought up, This will be a non-graphical MUD.
Any ideas or comments to add?
I like the idea, but can people go around randomly digging the ground looking for items?

That's the fun part. You need to put it where someone wouldn't just randomly dig, plus they would need to put in the coordinates.[edit] maybe make it obvious somethings there, and put a magical trap on it, so when they go to move it , poof, ashes.
Not bad, I like that it's pretty original.
Sounds good, I like the concept. Very original!

I'm not really into MUDs, but you've given me some ideas to add to a mental design document I've had floating around in my head for months. Thanks. =)

I'm sure Average Joe knows how to set up a devastating MAGICAL trap like that too. Idiot can't even carry around a sword. Wimp.

Heh, That's why average joe died from a rat mertek ;).
Thank's Crispy! glad to know it helped you.

Heh, nice, one of the best ideas I've heard since I've gotten back to the boards. I'm sort of partial to the original ideas, working on a couple of little demos myself just for fun. Keep up the good work.

Lol this concept kinda sounds like a combo between the games

"Lode Wars" <-Byond Game
and
"Dig Dug" <-Atari Game

lol its just my opinion, lol its actualy a interesting game concept, i'd play it ^.^

This isn't the game Elder, it's just a function in the game.
The actual game is a text-based MUD(no map) RPG.
