I was flipping through the channels this afternoon, when I am passing through Cartoon Network, a Trim Spa commercial is on! On a kids channel! Later, 30 minutes ago, I am watching Comedy Central and a GGW commercial comes on! At 9 pm, when anyone of any age could be watching. I don't know what is up with the commercials today but I think they are out of control and the people behind all this should be paying more attention to this stuff on cable. They're going to go as far as they can go until someone cracks down and then they move onto the next medium like a swarm of shameless locusts.
EDIT[4/13/05]: GGW came on again at 9:30 before South Park! I guess kids shouldn't be watching but how many of you used to stay to watch South Park or other shows not appropriate for your age when you were <17 or so? (Editted to prevent this from going back to top, more important stuff to be discussed by other people.)

For like 3 seconds before someone can grab the remote.

Younger viewers like it more than me. Think of a 12-13 year old male, "OH MY GAWD I SAW PART OF A BOOB!". I believe they would like it. I don't hear them complaining.

I've noticed the GGW one and thought it was odd that it was on at 9. Also in the order that my channels go I can turn to the disney channel, and check out some "good family" entertaiment, and then turn up one channel and see a preview for GGW. The GGW doesn't bother me as much as the Bling it on thing on Cartoon Network. That commericial sent white people back another 15 years >_>

As far as I am concerned if you are one of those over-reactive parents that want to censor everythig in the world to your child, then you should have Comedy Central on lock down on your television set anyways. There has never been anything approate for anyone under the age of 15 on that channel.
Cable providors and televsion channels have given you everything you need to make sure your children are protected from things you dont want them to see. EVERY TV now in this day and age as some sort of password protected V-Chip in it and there is no excuse to blame the media when a person is being a lazy parent. You can lead a horse to water, but you cant make it drink. |
In England we have the 9 o clock Watershed. That's when the little kiddies go to bed, and when the actually decent comedy starts.

I'll give you TrimSpa, but kids shouldn't watch Comedy Central at all, let alone in prime time. A GGW commercial fits CC's target demographic perfectly.

Ironically, cable was supposed to be commercial free- that's why you had to pay, to compensate for the lost commercial revenues....
But I hardly think the FCC (who regulates such things) stepping in with greater censorship is an appropriate answer. You do realize you can simply change the channel, right? And parents who let their kids watch whatever they want have bigger issues to deal with then TrimSpa. And the general rule in the US is that after 9pm is considered adult hours. Even the networks get away with racier stuff. Just breathe and relax. Stuff like this is the cost of allowing somewhat free speech and somewhat free markets :-) |

When was the Trim Spa commercial on? Because as far as I know, Adult Swim is like, not affliated with cartoon network, its like its own deal or something.

Plain daytime, right in the afternoon.

I find over here the ads aren't offensive they're just stupid. For example, the key to making an ad for a new show seems to be 'claim it was huge in the US'.
They've also resorted to playing encore presentations of shows (however the encore is planned and written up in the TV Guide long before the first episode of the series has even aired. So reguardless of how liked/disliked the show is, they're going to replay it). Basically if you want to put a new show on you keep on telling people they like it until they're convinced all their friends do. Cable TV is much worse than free to air (and not just because I'm paying for it). They've taken to putting on anything that will pay them money. They're completely irrelivent. Pretty much all of the cable and free to air channels are bombarded with a set of ads for mobile phone ring tones/backgrounds. It's not just that they're on constantly, it's not just that they're cheaply made (I'd compare them to ad banners for cheesy porn sites) and it's not just that they chose the most annoying sound on Earth as their centeral ringtone that's in almost all the ads. It's all those things together. If you think that's a rant, you should hear me when I get on the subject of SMS polls on TV shows. |

The cartoon network one is bad. But around 9 P.M., Southpark is on, which is only for mature people. So only mature people should be watching...
