Well, pretty much, but not a documentary, more of a comedy.

The books are a very funny comedy based on this concept. It's not actually a documentary.

Well, that is true, life is about reproduction. We have added more false meanings, but that is the one true meaning.

It might be the only meaning that we can still see. Who knows what other meanings creatures may have held- before failing to reproduce, and then never passing on their own 'meaning'?

Pphhhttt, I say, to reproduction! Pphhhttt!

Read the books. That's seriously what they come up with. It's in the book with the Golgafrinchans and prehistoric Earth.

I know it is in the book/radio show, I heard the radio show a long time ago, and it wasn't the correct answer, just one that someone spouted out.

One review I read of that book, many years ago, selected the bit about the invention of the wheel as an example of Adams' humor. (Paraphrase: "All right, if you're so smart, you tell us what color it should be.") At the time I didn't think the joke was all that funny; but after 11 years in the corporate world it's now one of my favorites...

Perhaps strangely, I have very little experience of the corporate world and I found that bit hilarious. =)
I went to see it last night, and... you know those teenagers who always sit in the back and dont shut up? Well, thats my 2 friends. So not only did I miss most of it for myself, but I was busy explaining whatever I did know to them >_> So I'll have to see it again when it comes out on DVD (9 dollars for a movie now? Rediculous) to fully understand it. I did find it quite funny though.
Zomg!
I loved it. Every last bit of it. I loved it all.

It was fantastic. The changes were extensive, so I treated it as an alternate story than an adaption.

I loved it!
And the Point of View gun...such genius that I could not hope to attain in a billion zillion years!

I loved it!

It gets a zillion stars of quality-ness!

Oh, and Trillian was hot.
I read the books they are awesome, I like it that he directected it to, also I heard that he was drunk and laying out in a field when he wrote the book.

It's about hitch hiking through the galaxie.

Douglas Adams did not direct the movie; he didn't even write it. He wrote the first draft of the script, then another writer came along and made several "artistic changes." Anyway, if you liked the books, you might also enjoy the radio and/or TV series.

Allegedly (and according to the introduction of the omnibus edition I own), he was drunk and lying in a field when he thought of the name (and then promptly passed out and forgot about it for ages). He didn't write the whole book in one night. =P
