Anyone else waiting for the muchly anticipated "War of the Worlds" movie, starring Tom Cruise and Tim Robbins? The book was by far a phenominal read, and I can quite say that it deserves a movie of such great actors. I can only hope they don't somehow manage to screw it up.
If you haven't read "The War of the Worlds" yet, it's by an author called H.G.Wells. He's a pretty all-around good author himself, and I highly recommend you check it out. It's basically about extra-terrestrial beings invading our planet, Earth, in the late years of the nineteenth century. I shall say no more.

Even the commercial is scary to me. Hell yes I want to see this movie.

I remember vaguely that the book got extremely popular at one time, so a popular radio host (Orson Welles) adapted the story for a radio drama on Halloween night in 1938 and created a national panic. If you could possibly stir up such a panic with just a radio, imagine what you could do with a presumably super high-end special effects movie. God, I know I'm going to cringe if they get the description of the alien correct. |

You're insane if you think any movie is going to reproduce the panic the radio broadcast of War of the Worlds created.
First of all, people back then, due to how perfectly the broadcast was done, were completely convinced what they were hearing was actuing going on. People thought it was the end of the world. Anyone who sees the movie will not feel the same way. It's just not possible. Unless they're a moron or out of touch with reality, they know it's fake. Personally, I think that movie's getting overhyped like others have in the past, and is going to bomb. It is possible to take something that used to kick ass and make it suck. Just look at the garfield movie. |

Just look at the garfield movie. They're heading in the right direction; but I'm not going to clarify on whether or not this movie will be great. However, having both Tom Cruise and Tim Robbins, two of my favorite actors, in a single movie has got to be promising. |
It's set in the present.
Which kinda defeats the threateningness of the Martians- in the book, Humanity only had horses and pretty rubbishy artillery. Nowadays, we have kick ass lasers and missiles and armour. We could pwn any Martians that tried to invade, they aren't scary. |

Most of my friends and myself found it quite funny in it's first couple of years (yes I'm old enough that I was reading it when it first came out). It had an edge to it that many other strips lacked. Unfortunately, once it became popular, the creator seemed to quickly decide he was in for maximizing money at all costs and sucked all the creativity out of it. |

Yep. I see that as changing the entire thing. I dunno. I'd much prefer it if it was set when it was supposed to be set.

Same here, the book was quite a horrific thing.

I think I prefer it in the now... Makes it more "relatable"... But I guess I can see where you are comming from, it makes it seem more hopeless for the humans for back then, which is a plus.
Is it just me, or was there already a really crappy War of the Worlds movie made like 20 years ago or something?? |
