Well during my brainstorming I decided that I am not the most skilled person in coming up with what makes a game fun. So I came here to the forums to ask what you feel makes a game fun to play, and that keeps you coming back. Some general topics for discusion are.

1. Battle System (Tried and true or New and Inovative?)
2. Overall gameplay
3. Sound
4. Customization (such as xml scripts to edit, map editing, player editing)
5. Interface
6. Anything else I may have not thought of.

I am having trouble deciding on these things so I came here to get some helpfull input.
I totally agree as long as none of those things don't mess with the server or whatever like if your game is fun and it's an hour download...wouldn't be fun to wait for. Originality especially makes a game fun (not in all cases) but usually it does, people love things they've never seen before it's new to them, a new experience. The gameplay's gotta be smooth no one wants to play a fast pace game that takes a year to do the move or whatever I mean imagine the game "The Sky is Falling" if the tiles never fell faster they just kept coming slow...how much fun would that be..but since they speed up it's a fun game and original.
One thing that makes a game fun and probably wat keeps a player playing is the thought of getting something good by playing the game. Another one is being the strongest to pretty much get bragging rights. There are plenty other factors, but I don't remember them.

Motivation.
A game that "pulls" you in, making you unaware of the graphics and such things. Music is a great way to surround players with your game, but should never comprise game-speed quality. In action games, you should be focused purely on the action, and nothing else, puzzle games should keep you focused on solving the puzzle, and rpgs should have a good story line, character cast, and game flow

I would have to say 100%, customization. It is hard for me to play a game with no customization. It just has to fit me, ya know. Games where everyone looks the same and stuff like that..man..Bump() that.

Agreed. If you're bored with a game, it gives it a whole new lease of life if you can not only edit it yourself, but also download mods and see what other people have done with it.

What really bothers me is those PVP games where you just start off and all the higher levels kill you. You hardly get a chance to do anything. What makes a good game is determination, originality and uniqueness. But all those factors together and you can create a very good game.

PvP is cool, but it probably is smart to make a "newb" area or do something like they did on MLAAS where you can't be attacked until you do something like deliver a document or attack somebody or something.

May I ask What PVP is?

Also. New Player Killing should be banned from games. People who think they are bad because they killed the new guy are idiots. Then, I have had that to me, and this dude, SLIGHTLY more powerfull than the dude that killed me, challenged my killer. He turned it down.

Also. GMs piss me off. They should have equal rights as everyone else. Well, abusive GMs that is.

PvP=Player versus Player (at least, thats what I think it stands for, correct me if I'm wrong)

Also, GMs (well, the way GM is used on BYOND-it is supposed to be similar to a Dungeon Master on D&D) are needed. Without them, the games would be total chaos. The abusive ones though need to be kicked.
In response to Jamesburrow
Yes, thoes are the ones I hate. They totally destroy games.
But the NON abusive ones are good. I understand How they could put into the game.
I like games that let you make your own maps. Starcraft is awsome because there are like.... a billion different maps to play.

I agree with Sid Meier's contention that a fun game is a game with a series of interesting choices that impact the outcome of the game.

Seems simple, but paying close attention to that concept can help a lot.

Yes, he did do a great job with that. Oh how I love Sid Meiers Games....

A way to do PVP is put in a proc or something that checks the players levels, and if they are more than, oh say 15 levels apart they can't hit eachother or start the battle against eachother if its turnbased.
content, features, and functionality. A great game will have games inside of a game player created. If you give the player the tools to make content himself (such as pvp, trading, diplomacy, etc) then you will have fun.
In response to Jon Snow
Yes..Just about anything you can do yourself like that. Or to yourself.
Such as he said. Diplomacy. I am guessing that means peace. But anyways. It makes it YOUR decision. Anything that I ger to decide, makes the game good for me.
In response to WindShock
Diplomacy means political relations, which could be peace, war, trade embargo etc.
In response to Justin Knight
Well, I knew it had something to do with relations.
Anyways. Its a decision. And that is what I like.
