Tysoke: there's probably like 20 byond members and thats it
Tysoke: everyone else thinks its stupid
Tysoke: cow, you have some of the most stupid ideas
Lord George: there's more than 20 o_O
Tysoke: ok, 30

(Lord George is me btw)

I realize there are way more Members than that, so how many are there? Maybe not as many as there are people who signed that stupid petition (like that ever works), but there's still way way more than 30 x_x

Maybe there should be a small thingie on the members page under "Recent Members" that says the total number.
We're not sure which information we will and won't make public.
In response to Nadrew
oh okay

(btw I meant & not % but oh well)
I myself have donated 25 memberships, so I'm sure it's well over 30.

hmm with around 2000 active players... that gives you a 1 in 80 chance to buy me a subscription

As Nadrew mentioned we haven't decided on how specific we'll get, but I will say that 30 is not in the ballpark for the number of memberships.

Hmmm, even though it was apparently a typo on his part (as his reply below states), the percentage sign in the topic title gives me an idea...

Why not just display the percentage of total users who are members? That's not very specific, and without knowing the exact number of total users, no one can use it to figure out exactly how many memberships have been purchased...

It would simply give a decent idea that a significant portion (I assume) of the users have signed up...

Maybe while you're giving these togglable features like showing non-members where you're at/letting them page you, you could make the site list them all and have it so you can check a box on your "Edit Site" page to stop you from showing up on the list. I just wanted to know about how many there were to make sure I'm not wierd for sending you money :P (but of course you're not going to tell me I'm wierd; because you gained 15 bucks)

I think the main concern is that people will turn around and throw the numbers in their face.
They'll make an estimate with the percentage and claim "well you guys have made at least $1,000, so now you are all rich you can afford to give member features to everyone for free".

Even with just a percentage people will be able to do that.
In response to DarkView
...and they aren't doing that already? >_>
In response to Cowdude
Just look at the list on the Members page, and poke around on some of them to see all of the various keys replying... While you won't get an accurate count this way, you'll still see that there's quite a few...
In response to SuperSaiyanGokuX
well I know there's "quite a few", but about the same % of members post on blogs as members and non members together that post on the forums =/ but oh well

How would you define total users?

Total keys? But people multi-key like crazy.

Total unique IPs? But people share computers and IPs all the time (like using a school computer).

What about someone who created a key 5 months ago and never logged in again?

There is no such thing as a "total users" number, unfortunately.
In response to Deadron
Ahh, you've revealed the fatal flaw in my plan...

Oh well, back to the drawing board...

[Edit] But surely there's some reasonable estimate? Couldn't the total number of online keys be tracked for a while to come up with a close enough average? I know this would never be what you'd call accurate, but since this would be a "general idea" kind of thing, isn't that alright?

Sure there's an estimate, but its accuracy is so low that it can only used for some vague planning at best, and isn't useful for saying "x% of users are members" in any official manner.

Look at it this way:
They have made at least $300

Nope. You've got to take into account that members are paying for things. Blog/Filestorage bandwidth, Pager bandwidth, BYONDscape subscription (at a bulk price), etc.
I think someone posted a breakdown of what your membership payment actually went to and they only make a couple of dollars per member.
That's not to say they aren't getting anywhere with memberships. As far as I can tell it's all going the way they had hoped. I just mean that they haven't quite filled Tom's money bin yet.
