Well, I'm really frustrated at my computer. I decided to go to best buy and let them look at my computer becuase I was fed up with my Counter-Strike latency being 1000+. It was going slower than it should be(BestBuy computer guy said it). I have no viruses, spyware, adware, ect. I think it may be memory. Here's some specs.
Xp Home Edition
System Model- Dell Dimension 2400
Total Physical Memory- 512.00 MB
Available Physical Memory- 276.37(Was 100somethingRamboosted)
Total Virtual Memory- 2.00GB
Available Virtual Memory- 1.96
RAM-512MB
CPU- Celeron 2.40 GHz
Graphics Card- Radeon 9250 (I bought it)
You can ask for more if you want
Any help?

Personally, I would up the RAM maybe by another 256 MB at least...but also I dislike Celeron(although I currently have the very same processor). I much prefer Pentium 4.
Uh...is your PC staying cool? Heat is the silent killer. Actually, often it isn't all that silent, really. [EDIT] Also, try getting a decent nVidia GeForce graphics card. That's my favorite, and it is an effective card. [/EDIT] Hiead |

3. You bought it from best buy. It's a Dell. You can only buy them direct from Dell. One problem is that out of 512MB of memory, 256MB seems to be all used up. Now that's quite high. There's lots of stuff starting up that probably shouldn't be. |
Yeah, I have been trying to shut off a lot of my starting up stuff. I know that doesn't have to do with the topic, but what is the run command I need to type to open that up. I used to know, but I forgot =P.

Oh, I didn't see that it said dell, he just mentioned best buy.
The guy at best buy wanted you to buy something, he would tell you that your computer will catch on fire if you don't buy "FireGone" by Norton, if you would believe him. |

Sadly I have another problem. I cannot move desktop icons at all. They are not locked and when I open a folder I cannot move them there either. I may be missing a icon config file. Anyone know what the file is called?

2. Old Graphics card, although good enough for games 5+ years old, any powerhour game made in the last 5 years will run poorly on it. I'm not sure about the 5+ years old thing, but I looked up your graphics card and it's not anything to run newer games on. It said something like it was the equivilent of an economy car in the video card world, get get to point A to B, but no real power. A decent graphics card can make up for some processing speed, actually. I bought a GeForce 5200+ 128mb AGP and games run much smoother on my computer. I think 5+ years old games is harsh though, because ATI's site says those can pack up to 256mb of RAM. Games 5 years ago had the minimum requirements of 4mb of RAM for a video card. Now, games have minimum requirements of 64mb or even 128mb of RAM for their video cards. |
Depends on the game, 2000 was not that long ago. Many games where still very graphics heavy. I have a 9800se, it works great. And these days, it costs next to nothing.

5 years is a very long time in computer terms.
http://www.the-underdogs.org/year.php?id=2000 I did a little search on the underdog's website and looked for system requirements on the game's websites. Minimum is 4-8 mb of RAM for the video card. |
