Now, first off I want to say if you spend hours at a time in "Gary's Mod" or "SourceForts" on Half-Life 2 this game might suit you well.
There's no goal. You just do whatever the hell you want. The kicker is the game is user-created. Like, the developers made a plot of land and a few spawn points and then let people build whatever they want.
So, the game has an in-game modeler and scripting language. Yeah, sounds confusing? Well it's not really. The modeling is pretty simple and you can just use premade scripts if you don't want to learn the language.
So, any ways. You get crappy online money to use, right? I think you get $50 a week + the $250 you start with. Don't worry, you can make money in-game (I made like $30 for being in a dance club for 10 minutes =P)
You can upload textures, pictures, sounds and crap for your stuff.
Awesome "game." =)

(If you do sign up, please use that banner link - It will use me as a referrer, and I will get some virtual cash for referring you to the World! =] )
If enough people sign up, I would be more than willing to shuffle out the virtual cash to make a virtual "BYOND" group. That way we could have group chats, BYOND titles, etc.
Also, there is no way around having to input Credit Card information - it is used to verify the age of players. If you are under 18, you will need a parent's Credit Card to make an account.
I no longer get anything from signing up using that link, so don't bother :) Still try SecondLife though, it's neat!
