For $45 =P
A local community college held an auction today and, after standing the sun for five hours, they finally reached the pile of G4's and G3's. I bid $45 and snagged a G4 for myself. After my recent OSX experiences, I felt that getting a mac that is capable of running OSX for $45 was a deal too good to pass up! Powermac G4 466mhz, 128 MB RAM, 30 GB HDD (?), "Digital Audio" edition (I think).      Now to get OSX -_- ~Kujila | |

Welcome to the dark side. That machine isn't too much older than the one I'm typing on right now (2002 QuickSilver 733 MHz G4).
Before loading OS X on that, you'll really want to bump up the memory. That machine takes PC133, which you can still get in 512 MB for about $79 new. I'm sure you can get some cheaper on ebay. If you're a qualifying student (or know someone who is), you can get OS X straight from Apple for $69 from the education store. Or maybe cheaper on ebay... If you go used, still try to get Tiger, as it will still make that machine sing better than any previous version. But only with the aforementioned memory upgrade! As for the zip drive, I don't think it takes floppies. Macs haven't come with floppy drives in about 7 years, haven't needed them. | |

A guy at the auction also suggested a student discount on Mac OS X... People in an IRC channel also suggested disabling spotlight and dashboard on Tiger to get a little speed boost =) ~Kujila | |

The mac didn't come with a keyboard, a monitor, or a mouse.
I'm currently planning on using a logitech USB mouse, a PS/2 keyboard with a USB converter, and a standard VGA monitor. ~Kujila | |
get with the times Ben- Apple has always supported multi-button mice, and currently offer a two-button mouse of their own (called the Mighty Mouse I believe).
and even if only using a single button mouse, you have access to 'right-button menus' via the CTRL- or ATL- (or was it Apple- ?) keys. really, the world does not need another 'two are better than one' argument because it is simply not true if the OS supports it properly. | |
Sluggish but in my opinion usable. I mean, I often use a Pentium 200 mhz with Windows 2000 installed on it along with Netzero's free dial-up (yes they still offer free internet)... yeah, so my standard of usability is a lot lower than some =)
When I have some extra cash I may grab some more RAM, but for now this will do ^^ Synergy is up and running allowing me to use one mouse/keyboard on both desktops.... awesome stuff. The only thing that got me was that the rotating desktop backgrounds don't display a smooth transition on this mac... I'm assuming because of the RAM. Video (obviously) struggles on it as well. ~Kujila | |
