Recently I have found myself very involved, and addicted, to roleplaying on rolepay forums. And by roleplaying, I mean really playing the role. None of this "RPG" stuff where you simply look like another character; really acting and pretending to be another character altogether.
Dungeons and Dragons can do this brilliantly, if the players are roleplaying and not simply rambling around looking for more baddies to kill. So I was thinking: would you play a text-based game, perhaps with a map to illustrate the different areas that people are in, based on proper roleplaying. And if so, would you still be enticed if it were Dragonball based?
Thanks for your time!

If it was nicely done, with a good player base, of course I would. I was always interesting in role playing myself.

I have quite a bit of experience in Game Designing/Programming, though I have been "out of the loop" for a few months now. This will be my first game since a moderately large dry spell. I think I could pull it off quite well. =D

I would be interested in such a game, but not if it was Dragon Ball Z. I've got nothing against it, I'm just not a fan of the series.
You mention playing as someone else, as if that were nessesary to role play. In the role playing games I've been involved with, I generally role play myself; I respond to the situations as I would were I in that situation. |

They just wander around a map killing things/blowing up things/doing the same quests as everyone else. It's not really roleplaying. For example. I'm sure if you were roleplaying a knight, you would react as if you were a knight, not as if you were a 21st Century person in knight's armour. It's hard to explain. Or at least, I find it hard to explain. I don't want someone coming onto the game with only the intention of killing everything, unless they happen to be playing the character of some possesed evil person or something. And even then I don't want them taking it too far. ~Ease~ |

Erm? No? There will be the usual "Say" verbs, Dice Rolling capacities, and "Go to" verbs. You could always "Roleplay" a grunt?

The roleplaying I used to do has been 'dead' for a couple of years at least. It involved people getting together in AIM chatrooms, making a setting, and said people introduce their character and interact with each other. From what I described it sounds boring, but it's not. I don't want to write specific examples because the post would get long and/or confusing.
The game you are suggesting doesn't sound all that innovative. A map to illustrate areas that are being roleplayed in, and people RP in that environment? That sounds to me like some kind of public chatroom with maps that is supposed to enforce roleplaying. RPing essentially depends on people, and it has many forms. I don't think it would work out well. A lot of factors contribute to an RP. As for the Dragonball RPing thing, I would definitely not be enticed to play it. I would probably avoid it. |

I agree, roleplaying and actually playing the role of your character is better than simply running around killing things, gettin gold and stuff, so that why when I'm done with my game I want to encourage people to actually roleplay when they're playing, but also I want to have a whisper verb in the game so that they can talk OOC (out of character) instead of having the OOC chat so that the world can see it...

Even in largely popular RPGs such as EverQuest, most people don't actually roleplay, they just play the game. Games are meant to be played, and that is not a part of the game. RPing in RPGs could almost be defined as an optional thing to do during the game. I think that Gokuss4neo was saying that the whole game would be RPing. |

Maybe make it a regular game yet "force" options that would make him enforce his current role. Like say that u could be good or bad, yet it would all depend on ur choices. If you wanted to be good, you would go on heroic quests. If you wanted to be bad, youd kill random ppl. Yet all this would not be shown in a meter or anything, just a simple indicator that shows what he is.. And also for stats, make them shaped around his personality by putting specific npc "tests" that will mold the character depending on how he or she talks to these people. For example, rage could be an added strength bonus in battle and would change depending on how "hot headed" the person was and berserking would be a side effect.
Example of how it could be determined below... NPC: Psst...you wanna see something ...nice? Choice A: Um...thanks, but no thanks... Choice B: You get near me again and I'll kill you. Choice C: Go away... Choice D: Something nice? How bout you removing your face from my field of view. Choice A would lower the "hot headed" value and possibly increase kindness or sumthing... Choice B would definitely raise "hot headed" value and possilby evilness? Choice C would be a placid no increase sort of thing... Choice D is a sly sarcastic remark so might raise idk... |

The game wouldn't be quite as ... free? as a public chatroom. It would be set in an era/atmosphere (e.g. Dragonball/Medieval/Fantasy) and people would be asked to roleplay in that era. It would basically be more restrictive than a chatroom, but less controlled than a Dungeons and Dragons session. I was trying to go for a happy medium.

I'm not a big fan of roleplaying or of DBZ, so no. =)
A warning, though; if you make a DBZ-themed roleplay, you will most probably attract hordes of DBZers who just want to hit pbags all day, and will complain (loudly and with much spam) when you ban them for not abiding by the rules. (Which you will have to do, because non-enforced RPs don't work.) |

I know he was saying that the whole game would probably be roleplaying... I agree with that I feel that roleplaying in a game adds something to the game that you wouldn't get in other forms of gameplaying.

you might want to look at BYOND Tabletop Gaming - it can support many of the elements discussed here, and provides tools for conversational role-playing.

Not a big fan of dragonball roleplay myself.. infact its often the lil effects n icons that hold my attention.
But in general I find graphics dont turn players into morons, just morons are more likely to stay if it looks nice. Try out a text based system with maps, but consider making a graphical rpg but with a more RP feel. Not all rpgs NEED leveling up to be fun. Always found starting players at a medium level and allowing them to assign xp to stats is a good method of maintaining roleplay. The morons get bored and the RPers can create thier characters without an hour of mindless leveling. |
