My computer keeps shutting off during start-up, the screen before Windows XP loads. Any suggestion's that isn't buying a new computer? Any help is appreciated.

What brand is it? If it is an HP or Compaq, you probably have a bad motherboard. I have seen this happen several times, the compasitors basicly overload and explode(well, no big boom, but they start leaking). Open your case, looks for stuff that looks like melted stuff spewing out of little cylinders. Oh ya, before you open your case, make sure you arn't voiding your warrenty.

When it shuts down, I have to unplug it, flip on and off a black switch, then wait a minute before plugging it back in and turning it on. There's no message unless it shut off when windows was starting. I haven't tried formatting either.
I can't seem to find the computer's brand. I don't think it has one, I bought it used. |

Try formatting, or maybe your PC just met the ends of its days.

Nesso this problem had happened to me, something on your computer before it starts up, is rejecting something or is causing an error before starting, as shades said reformating your computer would be a good idea.

You'll have to explain. What about formatting?
