I have no past experience with linux, but I am interested in putting it on my older PC and hosting BYOND games, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what vesion would be the best to use?
Puppy Linux. By far.
Because it's an older machine, Puppy linux is amazinly small, yet can still run ANY linux program out there (with easily installers called .pups)

The whole Puppy linux is only like 35MB or something.

Plus, I can help ya out any tim ya need it.
Any, really. I use Fedora a lot, if that helps. It's very easy to install, is free to download, has an easy update manager, can handle RPMS, is fairly small (A workable installation could be as small as 2-3 GB. About 6.5 GB is the maximum).

No, that would be Flame Sage.

It's not the size of the package that count's, it's what's in it. ;)

Seconded for Ubuntu.

Plus, they ship out free installer CDs! Granted, they take about four to six weeks to arrive, but it's still neat!

No duh? I was replying to flame sage. I just hit reply on your post. I've been replying to random posts for years now and I'm not about to change that.

Well, you should. It's people like you who are undermining the threaded structure of this forum. Grrr. -_-

Anyway... I've heard good things about Ubuntu. Never actually tried it though.

the one-thing you yahoos forget is that the poster does not need a GUI interface for hosting BYOND games. he/she needs a simple useable shell-based linux that works on the old computer.

heck you don't even know the details about the machine yet, so hold off on the fanboy rampage until we know things like processor speed/type, amount of ram available, harddisk space, internet connection.

I don't think that the lack of a GUI interface was ever mentioned in this thread by any of us Windows-scum, digi. ;)

no, but all the suggestions of distributions were primarily GUI-based ones. a BYOND hosting server has little need for anything more than a shell, especially on a low-end, or older machine. that was my point.

But in my oppinion, this guy knows a little about linux, it would be better for him to work in a GUI setting at first to setup BYOND, extract folders, and get his hosting files, and setting up a webserver.

Besides, I'm sure it's easy to make a GRUB bootup only to console.

Apology accepted, digi, apology accepted.

If thats the wanna be, Slackware. Just dont set "X" up. I think my Slackware obsession is starting to reach the same level as Gaim's. :(

it is, but again you are adding to much fluff for the setup he needs. if it's the only OS on the machine, you don't need GRUB (or atleast not a noticeable one - can have it boot directly).

Fedora is too simple.

more like fedora relies on too old a package technology. unless RPM suddenly handles dependencies better than debian does.

for an old machine, debian still seems to be the way to go if you are new to Linux. the simplest method my be to install the server-version of ubuntu, and then install the xubuntu desktop (Xfce window manager)- this provides you with an up-to-date debian distro, and a low resource GUI desktop (can run in 64MB i hear).
