PLEASE HELP! Chipset fan failing?!

I just got finished with the Linux LiveCD Knoppix, and I rebooted... all of a sudden I get this error!

Ahh! The chipset fan wasn't spinning!

It was HOT to the touch... The BIOS said its RPMs were at 0.

I turned the PC off, and poked it with a pen. I turned the PC on and it was spinning again!

That errors went away (The "CHA1" error I just disabled because I don't know what that is...)

Did Knoppix do this, or is my new computer breaking already?

If the brand of PC matches the monitor, I wouldn't rule out it just breaking.

Huh? This was built via parts from Newegg and a case from CompUSA, if that's what you mean...

No, the monitor said "e-machine". I figured if you had an emachine, that was your problem. It is possible that you got a bad mobo, these things happen. Also, it could have just been a random qurk.

Oh, ok thanks :D

And the monitor was a gift a couple years ago... replaced the old Packard Bell monitor I used previously.

Seems low to me, mine runs at about 3400 rpm.

Yeah, I think that's low. Mine runs at 3300 RPM, I have my frequency and fans set a bit low too.

It's changing everything at random it seems. Turn off your machine and try clearing the CMOS. That's a shoot in the dark, I think you may have a bad mobo. like Airjoe mentioned.

[Edit] You might also try Asus' webpage to see if they have user forums. I've found alot of my motherboard's issues through that. If you can get into your OS try a BIOS update.[/edit]

Oh I think I found the issue... My motherboard has some goofy "Cool-and-quiet" technology that is supposed to make the fans go slower if the computer is cool and faster if it's getting warm. Ack.

It should be running at least 3000, mine runs at 6000 and my other case fans run at 3000

why do so many people care if their computers are loud? just put on the headphones and you can't tell the difference!

I like mine quiet because they usually sit somewhere near my bed, and I like it quiet when I'm trying to sleep. (The only light any of them give off is from the network card =P).

Because I want to be able to hear what people in the next room are saying to me. Headphones won't help with that.

I was forced to use a 466 mhz G4 for a day or so. Thankfully I went and bought a heatsync, and my friend replaced the cheapo broken fan with a large shiny heatsync! :D

then make sure you get a fan to go with that new shiny heatsink... unless you like cooking eggs on your processor.
