2001 computer, HP, it was a gift. Came with XP on it. Can someone contact me on MSN or AIM, with the freezing this forum use is difficult. Defragging didn't help at all by the way. Taciturn93 on AIM or [email protected] on MSN.

I wouldn't call reinstalling Windows the "easy way out". It's usually a good idea to look for an alternate solution first.
|
Reinstalling Windows is not an option for me. I don't have the disk and I don't want to risk destroying my computer 100% because of a mistake on my part. I don't understand how this could just happen. ! It started once I download a RAM saving program from download.com RAMBooster 2 I believe. I made it "optimize space" about 8 times before the locking up and lagging and glitchy stuff started happening. Oh my god... this is horrible.

Did you do what I suggested in [link]?
In [link], Crispy wrote: > Look at the processes list (Ctrl-Alt-Del, processes tab) and see what is causing all the CPU usage. (Click on the CPU column twice to order the list from highest to lowest usage.) Do it and tell us what the high-CPU-usage programs are. |

Word isn't even on my computer. Like... This is insane. My CPU usage is jumping all around iin task manager. With no programs running except dreamseeker! Why would my CPU Usage be at 100% with 1 progam running and no unknown processes. Someone... please. BTW, AVG detected no viruses on my system. I am being urged to throw this computer out the window.Freezing... delaying, closing programs for no reason. And in IE, majority of the time, clicking a link does nothing... It just make the click noise and doesn't respond. This situation is critical. Throw your comp out the window please record it on video i don't think ive ever seen someone throw one ive seen them explode it :P. |
I checked my processes a million times. The two largest things are my Spyware software and Desktop Firewall. Had thhem on for about a a week and a half and they have never froze my system.

try going to start>run>cmd>chkdsk /f
restart, it should do a chkdsk That might help. Also, are you sure it is a software problem? You would be surprised at what weird things hardware manlfunctions can cause. Especially considering you have an HP, those thing have a history of motherboard problems, at least the ones I have delt with. |
Try removing your spyware/firewall/antivirus
And see if removing any of those fixes the problem. I've noticed cruddy av's (esp. avg) can do hella harm to a good runnin pc:) |
I have ran AVG on over 20 systems of varying types. I have never had a problem with it. Calling it cruddy is just plain wrong. AVG is top notch, and better than most commercial anti-viruses.
It could be something like an anti-virus, but it is very doubtful. The only way it could be that is if: A. Something modified a system file and the anti-virus is trying to repair it, but it messes up some dependencys B. The system is so old that a simple check is freezing it. |
I dunno, my p4 512mb ram system was freezing up like crazy. Finally I realized it was the AV because when I disabled it things worked fine. Switched over to nod32 demo and not a problem. Of course I'm not about to buy an av, so I got clamwin. It doesnt actively scan, but I rarely get a virus anyway, so I just scan suspicious downloads.
