I have installed a BricoPack by CrystalXP (They have really good software, I dunno why this would happen) called Clear Crystal I believe. Anyway, I really like it, so I don't want to have to uninstall it. It keeps all of the files it's replaced in a backup folder anyway.

Anyway, I need to replace the wininet.dll file in the system32 folder in the WINDOWS folder because I am having problems conencting to Windows Live Messenger since I have installed Clear Crystal. In normal mode, it's always in use.

So, I have to reboot in Safe Mode Windows, but there is another problem. I'm using the GRUB Loader version 1.5 and I don't know how I might be able to boot in Safe Mode Window. The only option is SuSE Linux and SuSE Linux FAILSAFE, but I do see that is has boot options.

So, I'm guessing I need the boot options.
Restart the computer, select windows and press the F8 key right after pressing enter to load windows. This should being up the windows boot options.

Thanks! The F8 button worked. But, now there is another problem. I can't seem to be able to replace it anywhere.

I tried using Linux to replace it, and it didn't work. Safe Mode didn't work. I'm freaking.

Well, if it is a system file(sounds like it is), than windows file protection service will not let you change it. Under linux, if you are using the NTFS file system, then it is probably mounted read only(As writing to NTFS can ruin data).
Chances are, there is an uninstaller for that program that will restore the backups, bypassing the file protection service.
Well, I uninstalled the program. It restored the backups, but get this. That wasn't tyhe problem. The problem lies in the uninstalling of the old Bricopack I had. When I uninstall it, I get errors about wininet.dll.

I know this because uninstalling the Crystal Clear bricokpack didn't work at all. I even renamed the old one in system32 and it replaced the file almost immediately (Windows is great). Doesn't matter though, because I think it replaces the most recent copy you had, which was corrupt for me.

Anyway, it didn't work, I used system restore, uninstalled the older one, and my computer went insane with those wininet.dll alerts whenever I tried to open something that used it. I might've just kept the copy that bricopack gave me, but I'm not taking any chances. I've spent too mcuh time today trying to fix the computer and I'm hardly willing to spend another hour.

How to replace currently locked files with Inuse.exe - WARNING!!! May TOTALLY DESTROY your windows installation. When windows has a file locked, it's usually for a good reason. You could boot into the XP Recovery Console from the XP CD to copy files around, too.

Changing that file will probably break the program you installed. It must've been changed for a reason.

Just to skin the file. As of now, I have my old one installed and when I unzip a file, desktop is not in the list as a directory to unzip the files to. I don't know if this is becasue of a replaced file, but it is really annoying. Typing out directories is not something I love. Sometimes I hit enter too fast and I don't even notice a typo that will have me looking for files for hours.
