King of Slimes' BYOND problems

a message from King of Slimes:

"King of Slimes hasn't been able to access the BYOND website since around December 8th, and he can play games he has in his hard-drive, but no one can join, what can he do to fix the problem? If you wish to inform him, e-mail him at [email protected]"

To add on to it, he can't even ping www.byond.com through his command line. It's acting as though the site doesn't even exist for him.

Edit: I asked him to do an nslookup for the site, and he replied with this.

Except the website IP (as I get it) is 66.33.192.205. I'd tell him to try putting that into the address bar but I get a "site temporarily unavailable" message, so it wouldn't do any good to pass that to him. :/

Could it be something with his ISP banned the site?

Sounds like his computer or his ISP's DNS server is erroneously appending .earthlink.net to the byond.com hostnames.

I told him to try ipconfig /flushdns (since it worked for me once before on a different website) and he was able to visit Byond's site exactly once, before he reverted to "page cannot be displayed" as before. I asked him to try nslookup once more and it's displaying the same earthlink.net addition. Would that rule out his computer being at fault?

Mike's probably right; this is most likely something with the Earthlink server. He should contact his ISP and give them an earful.

Yep, I'm accessing a website I'm not banned form with a proxy, thanks to those who've helped, and keep helping, please!

King of Slimes: In the BYOND pager, hit File -> Preferences. Then goto the "Advanced" tab. Make sure the hub address is set to "66.33.192.206". This will cause the pager to connect properly to BYOND. You should then be able to connect to BYOND games, although you still need a proxy for the site.

Send a mail to [email protected] if you have any problems, and I'll give you a temporary solution by providing a temporary DNS server for you to use in place of Earthlinks'.

And I try to get on a game, and it says "BYOND central can not be accessed." or whatever.

Edit cfg/byond.txt" and make sure that it's not using the second/backup hub address, since this overrides the address you set for some stupid reason.

Kind of shooting in the dark, but try this. Go to Start->Run, and put in

<code>notepad C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts</code>

and add the following lines to the file

<code>66.33.192.206 basic-bongo.dantom.dreamservers.com 66.33.192.205 basic-argon.dantom.dreamservers.com 66.33.192.147 dantom.dreamservers.com 66.33.208.104 dreamservers.com 66.33.192.205 www.byond.com 66.33.192.205 byond.com 66.33.192.205 developer.byond.com 66.33.192.205 games.byond.com 66.33.192.206 members.byond.com</code>

and save it. If DNS servers are the problem then this should fix it, at least for the website.

Directory Name Service. DNS servers look up domain names (like byond.com) and return the IP address associated with it. Sort of like a telephone directory. That's why you can type www.byond.com in your browser rather than having to memorise 66.33.192.205 (its IP address).

Actually, I was under the impression that the hosts file - at least on Windows - is bugged in a way that it does not report information like the name of the virtual host. This wouldn't make websites work, since typing the URL would be the same as typing the IP directly, something which cannot work.
