I was playing Naruto:Shadow Shinobi by Rykon and I was speaking in Spanish. So i was talking to a friend of mine and we were talking in Spanish over OCC. Then an admin muted my friend for speaking in spanish!!! So i said one thing bad in Spanish. And then all who could speak spanish were saying their share. I was sayin that the admins were being racist. All they were tryin to do was dance around that word. Then the creator was agreeing to the rule that u cant speak in Spanish. Then an individual was said something bad in Spanish and i said lol. Then the admin jailed me and banned me!!!! Is this fair? Banned for speaking spanish!!!
They say that goes for german and russian speaking!! Post your thoughts please.

Yes, actually. In a game that is, to a large degree. English speakers, it is fair to request that all speech be done in English if possible. When you go around speaking in a language almost nobody else can understand(At least in that area) people are going to assume you are speaking in Spanish to say something ill about them or others without them or others understanding.
On top of that, it is not the BYOND staff's job to police game hosts. The best thing you can do is refuse to play on that server/game in protest. Heck, you could run your own server of a chosen game and boot people for speaking English. I'm sure BYOND has enough native and second language Spanish speakers to fill a server of whatever. |
English is the official language of many games, including mine.
We mute being for not speaking in english, mainly because its annoying not to be able to understand things. |
Most BYOND games wont allow it. The reason being that you can't moderate a public conversation if you don't understand the language it's in.
It's also fairly annoying for other players to have the main chat channel filled with what might as well be random gibberish. |

Its not fair your a victim of little admin kids and why in the world would you be playing a stupid naruto game and even worse is that it is a RIP. I wish we could say that about all of them, so we can just annihilate them. Unlucky enough, some games didn't rip enough from the BOTLS source. |

I'd allow it. If people can't understand what's being said then it's no different than talking in /tells. If somebody does speak that language and hears something offensive in that language, then translation can be easily achieved and moderation action can be taken.
In terms of the annoyance factor, just set some clear rules to try to keep it to a minimum. |

on one hand, it would have been better for everyone if game admins atleast asked you nicely to speak english or asked that you take your conversation to a more private area where you wouldn't disturb or confuse others- some people just see other languages as spam, or have some irrational fear that everything you say must be against them in some way.
on the other hand, if the people running the game are so shallow-minded as to kick you out because you can speak another language, then they probably aren't worth dealing with. most likely they are just jealous. things brings a good point: multi-lingual games/communities. BYOND could do some good supporting other languages in it's DS/DM/DD interfaces. and games could become more popular if they support multiple languages (sorta like what forums like phpBB do by providing 'language files' for all the text). they just need to provide areas where people can chat in their own lingo without disturbing others. |
Their game, their rules. If they say don't cuss, son't cuss. If they say French only, speak French. If you don't like it, don't play.

I've found the only minimum possible for the annoyance factor of multiple-language chat is really none at all. It very very quickly becomes a matter of two or more groups of people, one of which that does regard the other as mostly gibberish. It gets distracting, and this is probably worse in games than in a regular chat. In a regular chat it's quite annoying enough. If the host wants to set up a specifically multilingual environment, that's their own business, but otherwise the assumption should be that only one language is preferred in the game, whatever it may be. Every single commercial MMORPG I can think of, without exception, does not tolerate non-English in public channels (Or, in the case of 'localized' servers such as German servers, French servers, Asian servers and the like - Anyone not speaking that localized language).
As Lummox notes, it can be incredibly distracting to gameplay; Because of that, it tends to be common courtesey to speak a language which is mostly regarded as the universal language (Unless the game specifies otherwise) - English. |

In my game if someones was speaking in another language I would tell them to keep it to tell or say, or else I would mute them for a minute or two.
|
If I hear other people speaking in other languages, I will ask them upto a few times to speak English, before I would take any action(if I need to, I will then mute them for a short time, however it Isn't a bannable thing), this is because, how can I run my server propperly, if my mods, and myself can't understand what is spoken.
If 99.99999% of the people speak English on the server, which inludes yourself, (otherwise you wouldn't even be on Byond), the only reason you would be speaking another language, is so noone can understand what you're saying(which if nothing else, is bad educate), inwhich you should either use PMs, or the pager(even tell in an excluded area, would be okay). I personally don't feel the need to post this in my rule banners, because it rarely happens, (and if I say speak english, people pretty much listen) which is why I give a few warnings first. However if the person has it posted in their rules, then they have a right to mute you without a warning as you broke a rule, pretty much written in stone (if it wasn't in the rules, and you got muted/banned with no warning, that clealy is an abuse of power, which it wouldn't even be worth your time to play that game/server "if there are multible servers" anyway). |

what may be more useful, and won't alienate the players that wish to speak their native tongue, is to provide an 'ignore' function for general chat (OOC for example), then you empower the players to decide whether they want to listen to the others or not.
just make sure you provide the non-English speaking folk a way to contact admins for help (a special 'admin' say verb, for example). then everyone is happy! :) |
hey dude, i REALLY agree with all that --> they could have been racist or hate Spanish ppl or w/e. But it goes BYOND that . If you havn't been an admin you wouldnt get this, but admins like to abuse their right. If you were just slightly annoying the admin he would mute you to say "Hey I got power!". I personally do it alot and alot of ppl do it to me. I'm not sying everone is like this --> just pointing out that it could have been alot more than racist

What, if anything, does that have to do with gathering opinions on whether its okay to restrict language in a game? |
Perhaps it wasn't racism, but their insecurity. They don't know what you were saying and they were afraid of it, or thought you were speaking about them. If a person requests that you don't speak spanish over OOC, then don't. It's simple, follow their rules if you wish to play their game. If the rules are too extreme, don't play.

I share your pain. Once I got muted in wiz_chat for speaking British English... it was terrible. :(

Indeed, I never felt a need to put up a rule in my own chat either, because it didn't happen often. Normally I don't feel muting without warning is abuse of power just so much as rude, unless the person should know they're doing something wrong. In the case of speaking a different language, I always say something before banning, because really you never know if someone just stumbled in and didn't have a clue what the dominant language would be. I've always been against 'common sense rules' which are not universal; I mean this in the sense that, I would most likely post a rule about English being the language to speak in a public channel. Maybe because I feel its too annoying to stumble over individual cases. Maybe because I don't feel that common sense applies to most people half the time, anyway. Perhaps I'm too pessimistic ;)

Look the people that admin like that are most likely little kids who are power hungry just get over it and play a game that someone hasn't ripped you will see the difference in the way admins react.
