Punishing the kid wouldn't help the people out in the slightest. So he doesn't get to play on the internet or go around his friends places, does that fix a cars?

Anyway in this case it's not because they're his parents it's because they're all on the same insurance policy. If you and I were on it we would suffer too.

I agree and what is worse is the fact that in a lot of places, they hold the parents responsible for what their children do. Which is ridiculous. If I had a kid and he did what this guy did, not only would he be grounded forever, have any privileges taken away, but I would request they put him in jail for awhile so he can see what it is like.

Yeah, because stripping people of joy is a sure way to make them feel like its worth it to change what they did wrong. </sarcasm>

I seriously can't stand the theory that some parents so lovingly adhere to, where teaching your kid and helping them grow up involves neutering their ability to experience the world around them and inducing fear into them. Fear of doing something because a bad response would occur is adequate when dealing with small children who aren't yet smart enough to understand certain things, but is never a thorough way of dealing with anyone who can actually think for themselves. Making sure your kid understands why what they did was wrong, is a thousand times more effective than telling them it was wrong and just shuffling them off to some place where they can't do anything.

You simply can't do $7,000-10,000 worth of damage (plus messing the axle up in your own car) with something as simple as what you've just described...

You had to have slammed into those cars... This can't possibly have been just a bump from "sliding"... This kind of damage can only be done by full force ramming at a speed higher than your average pulling out from a parking space speed...

I agree completely, but some punishment may be in order. How about a job to pay off the cost to fix the damages?
Why hasn't your license been taken away yet?

Marijuana is certainly not safe. Beyond driving while under the influence of marijuana (which also happens with alcohol, more often, yes, I know), there are also significant links between marijuana use and psychosis, schizophrenia, manic-depressive, etc. Basically, marijuana is linked to a wide variety of mental illnesses. Not good.

I'm still in favour of decriminalising marijuana posession, but only because I think harm prevention is a better approach then prohibition.

You got to be young because you obviously have no sense of responsibility.

I'd own up to being young, but my lack of responsibility precludes it.

(Or in other words, much as I agree with your opinion - it was a bloody stupid thing to do - you should paint with a slightly narrower brush)

is there a defense against parked cars?

Sure there is. I know I've got it somewhere... ah, here we go: My trusty Shield of Protection From Parked Cars +5*. Oh, hey, and here's my Teabag of Immunity to Water... and my Amulet of Protection From Doorknobs +3, I was looking for that. Man, I haven't seen some of this stuff in ages...

*Also known as the Shield of Sobriety. *ahem*

Heh, you have never seen an auto damage appraiser at work. ;-)

I had a guy pull in to close to my truck and scratch the paint along the passenger side. No big deal, I thought. I went into the appraiser.

$800.00

Yup, on a 1994 Ford ranger. He claimed up to 3 body panels might need replacement. I decided I could live with a small scratch, cleaned the other car's paint off and buffed the area. After that, it was hardly even noticeable.

I agree though about the axle comment. There was some serious force involved. And probably other factors....

Its like that 'America is too strict' topic. Except you replace 'strict' with 'retarded.'

In general.

I'm confused as to how you came to the conclusion that Marijuana is less dangerous than Alcohol.

The amount of damage I find easy to believe if he hit two cars, and if he messed up his axle. A simple slide while pulling out would at best cause a scratch or a very very minor impact, and this is really only possible if the roads are supremely icy and you're pulling out way too fast. I mean, we're talking about starting out from a parked condition, because he was obviously near the other parked cars. To cause damage like that you basically have to peel out and then take a very sharp turn, and at that point any adverse road condition would have done the rest by causing the "slide" he described.

He did mention he was in an SUV, which is a pretty bad choice of vehicle for someone who's been in one accident already, let alone two. Most people who drive SUVs--I'd say about 90-95%--have no idea how to properly handle a large vehicle and are hardly much safer (to those around them) in a small one. Multiply bad driving and bad decision-making by alcohol and possibly recreational drugs, and then multiply by the extra size and mass and poor handling of an SUV, and you basically have an accident waiting to happen. If his parents deliberately let him still have access to the SUV at all after two accidents, they're partly culpable here.

Obviously the best choice is to lose his driver's license for a few years, and get into some court-ordered community service. Whether that will teach him anything, I don't know. He's already copped to using fake IDs to drink, which sounds innocuous but is supremely dumb. I don't think he caught any legal trouble for that, so he needs some serious intervention.

I can already tell you take no responsibility for your actions. "The poll hit me out of nowhere!" Comes to mind. You done it, not your car.

On that note, does anyone else suspect this guy is full of it? He posts two extremely controversial topics that you can guess are going to draw a ton of attention, then only replies once?

I don't think he's full of it; I think he's just hoping to get some people to say aw, poor him, that really sucks.

What sucks is that his parents are now uninsurable too. On the bright side, they had a little of this coming.

No as kids they need to learn for every action there is going to be a reaction. Oh, its cool, you smashed your car, don't worry baby everything is going to be alright. No it isn't. And that isn't how the world works.

Even still, if you had 3 panels replaced, it would be the same as if they were completely distroyed.

I had a little old lady in a very large truck ram my backend(We had both just stopped and when we started moving again, she gunned it or something, claimed she never saw me, even after stopping behind me once) and do about $1,500 worth of damage. In this case, it was a large truck hitting a stopped car, so it was about the same situation. I had $1,500 in damage and she had to wipe off her steel bumper with a damn cloth to remove my car from it. Seriously, cars cost a lot to fix, but a simple parking accident won't do that much damage.

I was backing out of work one day and hit another car, I did so little damage that, after cleaning it off, both cars had little more than a small chip in the paint.

Point is, he had to have been doing more than backing out, unless he was backing down a steep icy paved driveway.

The opposite of radical and stupid reactions is not to have no reaction at all. The fact that you somehow managed to draw that conclusion from what I wrote is startling, at best.
