Suicide. Alright. I was having an odd discussion with my emo friend..and he brought up suicide and the only reason he didn't do it was 'cuz he was scared. I thought about it for a minute, and I was thinking to myself. How is it that most people say that suicide is for people who are wimps/weaklings...when most humans are afraid of death? I of course didn't say anything to him, not wanting him to die..o.O But, what do you guys think about that?

You see them as being brave to push past that barrier. Other people see them as being to weak, scared, etc to confront their problems and deal with them.

Actually, you really should have said something. You should have said there's a good reason he's scared of death... because it's not something that he should do.

If you let him talk about suicide without telling him that it's a bad idea, eventually he's going to desensitise himself of it and you're going to be out one friend.

Form an intervention group if you have to, and try to call a suicide hotline to see if they can help you talk him out of it. If the person is far enough gone to mention that the only reason he's not committing suicide is because he's scared, he's eventually not going to be scared any more.

Whoah, we weren't talking ABOUT him killing himself, just the subject itself.

Just saying, if you really do have a friend who really would commit suicide if he wasn't so scared of the idea, then it would be a good idea to take some real action rather than chatting about hypotheticals on the BYOND forums. Give him the ol' care bear stare!

Emo kids don't kill them selves. They would miss out on all the attention it would bring.
Why do you have an emo friend

i am not afraid of death, personally. what you don't understand is that people say suicidal people are "wimps" is because they are, or at least people think they are, "afraid" of life in some cases. this isn't the case with all suicides, obviously, but that would be why people say/think that.
It's for wimps becuase its taking the easy way out. They cant handle the pressures of life, and just...you know kill themselves. People who do that are also very selfish. They dont think about how it may effect other peoples lives. Dieing is easy, but think about the stress the persons family and friends will have to go through... Its just selfish.

I'd suspect that someone depressed to the point of contemplating suicide probably isn't thinking coherently at all. To some people who really get that far low, they REALLY think that dying would be a better outcome for everybody involved. It's easy to forget about little good things you might bring to others when you start to flood yourself with thoughts like "If I were gone then they wouldn't have to waste their time dealing with me anymore."

It becomes a perverted act of selflessness because you become all but totally incapable of seeing yourself being anything other than useless, and think that everybody you know wouldn't deserve the agony of putting up with you, etc. It's not about fixing your own problems; you think you are the problem and killing yourself would solve the problems of other people.

If you think that makes you sound tough, it doesn't. As a matter of fact, it is human nature to be scared of death. If you are not scared of death, there is obviously something wrong with your brain, or the way you think...and you should seek help.

i guess i need to seek help then.

i am not scared of death, i AM scared, however, of becoming a vegetable, or a long, painful preceding(torture, for example) to my death. i am only human, i have fears, but death isn't one of them.

Thats not the situation all the time. Sometimes they just want to escape from life.
In response to Knifo
No, Sarm is right.

That -is- the situation all the time, trust me.

That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Conquering the fear of death does not mean anything is wrong with you, it means you are unafraid of the unknown.

Which...is...not...normal. What part of that did you not get? I did not say it is impossible to be afraid of the unknown, I just said it was not normal, because it isn't.
