Is the PSP any good? I'm thinking about getting one.
For the price it is now, if you can get a 1.5 it is definatly worth it. You can do alot with that tiny little machine. As for SONY and games; its ok. There are some pretty epic games comin' up. Like some new Final Fantasy and its online infrastructure is good.
I own a PSP and a DS myself and I must say that I rather play any PSP game than a DS game any day. If you do get a psp make sure you check out the following titles:
*Socom: Fireteam Bravo 2
*Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
*Monster Hunter
*GTA: Vice city stories
*GTA: Liberty city stories
Besides the fact that most users use the PSP for homebrew instead of the actual PSP games, then no. It is a expensive piece of junk. I have had TWO so far, I ended up selling both of them when I couldn't find ANYTHING I wanted to play. And I have had 3 Nintendo DS systems too, I ended up simply not finding anything I wanted to play on either.

When you get down to it, you got two options:

Sony PSP: Shallow, unorginal games with pretty graphics and bad loading times.

Nintendo DS: Unique Orginal Games, with low end graphics (a lot of times, not even 3D!), fantastic loading times.

I would actually suggest you get a GP2X. It is a hand held, multimedia portable that runs on a Linux OS. There are tons of applications, games and emulators for it. What is better then carrying Chrono Trigger or Super Mario Brothers in your hand?

Because it is a open source system and runs with a Linux OS, a lot of the emulators run better on the GP2X then they would on the Sony PSP. The GP2X is actually very close to the same hardware then the Sony PSP, but lacks any real 3D rendering hardware, so you'll be hard pressed to play stuff like PS1 or N64 games.
Thank you for your opinions. I'll look into the GP2X thing. I have a DS, but I very infrequently use it.
The psp is an excellent gaming device, unless you unlike constantly having to update. It's got alot of people saying bad things about it... especially Nintendo fanboys. In any case, its pretty awesome and I don't care what anyone says but I've had some good times with my PSP.
If you do get one, heres a list of games to buy:
Megaman Maverick Hunter X -
A gnarly remake of the first MMX game, and trust me do they overhaul it. The best part is the new vile mode, not just because you get to be the weirdo but because you get around 50 or 60 weapons.

Powerstone Collection -
Everyone who has a Dreamcast loves Powerstone, its kind of hard to get used to on the psp but if you do its a pretty awesome game too.

Monster Hunter Freedom -
Capcom is really a gaming giant, around 5/6ths of my collection of psp games is capcom... about a third of my ps2 games are capcom. Monster Hunter Freedom is a port of the original Monster Hunter. Only they mixed it up with several new monsters and weapons.

Tekken Dark Ressurection -
I've spent many an hour beating the crap out of unsuspecting computer players who are several levels higher than me on this game. Its worth it. Buy it.

Anyways, if you do get one, remember, the psp library of games is pretty huge and there are several games that I don't have that I want to get... Like Ghosts n' Goblins.

Let's just go with this...it isn't. Long story short, it isn't. Handheld systems are pretty much garbage today, and I don't say that from a standpoint of being a fanboy of any particular system/company. I don't know a thing about PSP but I have yet to see any commercials or advertisments for specific PSP games. Really it just means if you get one you'll be disappointed with the number of games you buy with it.

Same goes for DS. Lately, Gameboy too.

I'd have to disagree - I've played quite a few good DS games. In particular, Pokemon Pearl and Kirby Squeak Squad are recent games I played that I've quite enjoyed.

I've decided that handheld gaming in general isn't worth it. I don't travel, so why would I need any of them?

I've also played quite a few good PSP games - Killzone Liberation and that weird game where you are loads of those little blob things are quite good, and you can get, either via a PS3 if you happen to be absolutely loaded, or through just buying the PSP ports, PS1 games like Medieval.
I'd like to get a DS for a few of the games (Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon DS, and of course Mario) but I'd also like a PSP.

The only modern console I don't like is the X-Box 360, but to be honest, I'd rather not buy any new consoles, handheld or otherwise, and buy upgrades for my PC.

I don't travel a lot either but sometimes if you are waiting at the doctors office or something similar to that, it is fun turning on your PSP and then start playing Quake 2 Online with other PC + PSP players.

Yeah, but should you really spend $160 on something you'll use so rarely?

Depends what the person is planning on using their psp for, I use my PSP almost everyday.

As do I. There are quite a few good games for psp, such as my favorite Monster Hunter Freedom and Monster Hunter Freedom 2 which will come out in the fall(I pre-ordered it).
Besides the games though you can watch movies on it, listen to music, hold photos. The good thing about music is when you run out of space you just run out and get a new one.
Someone also mentioned that psp above 1.5 are useless, not true if you really want 3.50 there must still be the link to an EBOOT.PBP file somewhere that could let you update to 3.50 then get Lumines(?) and use the downgrader to take your psp back to 1.5 or if you want to downgrade just for the homebrews the same thing can be used to enable homebrews.

A....new....what? A new PSP? Wait so if you run out of space you just buy ANOTHER PSP? My my, we might as well spring for those iPods/iPhones now if we just want music. Or even better a general MP3 player that doesn't require paying for the songs!

Yeah as said before there aren't enough uses of the PSP to buy it.

PSP takes memory sticks. He means go get another one of those, not a PSP.

A memory stick is what I meant. Who in the right mind would buy a new psp if they ran out of space?
Meh I can't really say; I haven't even seen a PSP comemrcial in ages..0_0 If you're looking for mainly PS2 type games, PSP would be the way to go. As I hear it, they're basically PS2 ports and/or games you'd find on the PS2. As for DS, its the usual Nintendo franchises with plenty other new ones; and its basically the PS2 of the handhelds(number of games wise, not variety). But really if all you want a PSP for is to watch videos and play music, you could just get a DS and a storage device and you can do all that on your DS. Even since I got a cheap one(there are much better ones), I've been using the hell out of my DS. Plenty games to choose from in the DS library, but not enough cash to buy all of them..0_0

I think you are misinformed. The iPod doesn't require you to buy songs, it allows you to do it. I have plenty of songs that I didn't buy from iTunes on mine.

Now see, I have a grudge against Nintendo because my DS microphone broke for absolutely no reason. I don't mean it MIGHT have been no reason, I mean it broke for absolutely no reason at all.
This means I can't play Warioware Touched anymore... not to mention, I can't play Wario: Master of Disguise.
There is no way in HELL I'm going to buy a DS Lite either. I'm wayyy to frigging broke and lazy.
