This whole forcing of upgrade from older to newer versions is just outrageous. Not only do they shred apart and destroy all the easy and functional attributes of BYOND interface since v.341, they force you to deal with the unorganized, difficult and annoying version of Dream Seeker by forcing you to update.

Sure this may be biased, but with good reason. I see no clear why i should be forced to ditch the more comfortable and simple interface of the older versions to be discomforted by this new blob of an interface.

If they're really going to force people to use the new version. you would think theres an optional download with the same old versions like 341 when the all you needed was in 1 window- but with the improved code and utilities found in 4.0, which are the only good things about it; the new capabilites.

Thats all, i just wanted to vent- since they'll probably never make Dream Seeker comfortably playable again, now that the old versions aren't even allowed to play anymore.

Edit- All in all, this is just going to end up turning the once large gap seperating enjoyment and dread to a small boundry, easily to be swayed in either which way.
I must have missed the part where they force you to update. 0.o

Every game ive tried to join a game, ive been getting:

Dream Seeker is too far out of date. (Get the latest and greatest at byond.com.)

Which games, previously, were playable with any version.
And i noticed no download, or change in the code.

Perhaps these games were upgraded to use the new 4.0 functionality.
In response to Karnlor
That's because games compiled with 4.0 might be using features that older versions can't handle. It saves the problem of people complaining when game x won't work with old client y.

I suppose the FORCING of downloading an update is unfounded, but in a sense- its not. As if i choose to play a game i like, i have to update, and lower the level of my satisfaction by playing through the crippling setup of the newer versions.

I still stand with the argument that the new update is a disgrace on interface design. Eventually newer games will come out which require the update but be held back to an extent by how easy it is to change things, interact, and other such functions found within the Dream Seeker client- torn to shreds and fragments which you have to switch to and from just to get what you want.

A minute bother to time wasted, but when you want to play something you don't want to have to switch back and forth to another window just to change a few things around.
Doubt people are as adamant about the downgrade as i am, but i find it horrible.

I do agree that they could've kept the default interface similar to the older versions for better results, but as far as anything else goes it's definitely an upgrade. I do feel like I was practically forced to use the skins system established in order to tolerate those games without one, but I plan on making a public skin that closely resembles the older versions, hopefully that will make things a little easier.

Just give it time however, pretty soon most recently updated games will have skins of their own to correspond with their games, I mean look at mine for example it definitely is an upgrade.

Downgrading usually removes features and functionality. 4.0 doesn't do any of that.
So everybody whines and complains because BYOND can't do what they want with the interface, and when the new interface features become available they whine and complain because they can't use their old limited interface which they were "comfortable" with.

People are impossible to please.
How is this any different from being "forced" to upgrade your operating system to run applications not built to support older versions :P? You can stick with your old version of BYOND however you're only going to be able to play stuff built for it so you better archive all the old versions of games because that's all you'll be able to play.

Downgrade? More like a Upgrade.
they added skins which allows the game creator to better suit your screen for that games features
they added opengl for maps to allow for scaling
which was a good thing
they removed the onscreen arrows but that can be solved with the numpad anyway so its just making you switch a few keys
I dont see why you have to complain about new features
just because you think that byond is yours to complain about
there are other people playing who do like these things
I have to agree that the default skin shouldn't have been changed, but designing my own skin is fun, because now I can set it up the way I always wanted it to be.

I was testing some of the new features at first on the old skin, and I have to say its really annoying. They should have kept the old interface the same and allowed people to change it if they desired, but the new default is annoying.

How did you get the thing at the top that says Fighters of Legend?

You can please some of the people all of the time, or all of the poeple some of the time, but you can kill all of the people for all of time with enough explosives.

What is annoying about it? We can always tweak the default skin, to a degree.

I don't like how its set up. I liked the fact that in the original if the resolution was high enough, you had the stat panel under the map, and the text on the side. Now, instead, theres (on my resolution at least, 1280x1024) 2 giant black squares that have absolutly no purpose what so ever above and below the map display. On the old interface, the map was at the top, and the Stat panel was below it, and the text information on the right, so there was no useless black space like there is on the new default interface. Plus, to add to it, both the statpanel display and the text box are a lot smaller, so not as much can be seen at once.

We've actually talked quite a bit about ways of making it possible to get the Info control to at least be togglable below the map. The next release may make this more workable, though it can't be automatic because the skin system just isn't equipped to handle that. We'd need some kind of visible checkbox to handle it instead.
