I suppose a lot of people have noticed multiple people spamming the forums in the past couple days.....with inappropriate pictures and other just pointless multiple posts. well I think that Byond needs to do something to prevent these little 11 year olds from doing so.
Yeah, this has been noted and the BYOND forum moderators are well aware of this issue, and there is discussion of how these attacks can be prevented and taken care of quicker.
You mean besides delete the posts and ban the players?
Not multiple people; multiple keys. The same twit is doing all of these. Considering Dark Wizard showed up again just a couple of days ago when all this started, it's not really hard to figure out who's behind this.

I mean like doing something to prevent them from spamming i.e. Automatically deleting topics with similar names. Make people wait a certain amount of time before allowing them to post another topic These are just ideas so Im not sure how affective theyd be

So does he have like a vendetta against Byond or something o.O since he made that crappy rsc extractor or whatever.....
In response to Monkeykid0049
Nah. Since he was banned and professed his eternal hatred for BYOND and all that it is. He, of course, adeptly applies doublethink, though, and ignores the fact that he is still obsessed with BYOND.
Welcome to the world wide interwebs, where people are going to do what they want to do and have the ability to become as anonymous as they want to be. BYOND is never going to be able to stop all forms of spam, the only realistic way would be to review every single new BYOND member before they could use the forums and that would become such a hassle that people would stop signing up. What the BYOND staff are doing right now, is about as much as they can do at this moment in time.

Well, there are a few basic security measures we can take to greatly reduce the work in dealing with spammers. We're looking into it.

If you know it's Dark Wizard then couldn't you IP ban him or is that not really possible?

He uses proxy servers to circumvent that. I'm sure if things came down to a matter of subpoena we could eventually track him down, but that'd take a lot of time and money and a longer time for a civic lawsuit to get the money back.

Whatever the case, he might as well make himself eponymous and change his name to Script Kiddie.

But wouldn't it be oh so fun to sue him :| I know I would love to do it.

I'm admittedly ignorant of the whole process, but couldn't you report him to his ISP and (hopefully) get him kicked offline for a while?
In response to Sarm
No we couldn't since he is not doing anything truly illegal.

Making some bestiality porn available to minors isn't illegal? This is supposed to be a family-friendly site.

Edit: Well, porn in general, but I distinctly remember a couple of fishes in one of them too...

I've seen people implament banning systems on websites and IRC that can IP ban a person permenantly, even if they use a proxy server.

Cookies can be used to store a persons IP on their computer secretly, when the person re-visits the site their Ip address can be compared to the one stored in their cookies, if that IP address changes a lot over a short period of time it is likely they are using a proxy server.

Javascript can also be used to send IP addresses to a webserver as Javascript is run client side (meaning it will always send the computers IP address, not the proxy server one they are using). If the two IP addresses are different then they are more than likely using a proxy.
Obviously disabling Javascript would make this method not work, but you could just as easily implament methods to prevent a website from working if the script doesn't return an IP address. Or you could just make the forums require Javascript to be enabled to post, so turning it off means you cannot post.

Those two methods though not 100% fool proof are more than enough to stop most anyone except the very smartest of people. Which I honestly doubt Mr. Spammer is.
It is a lot of hassle to go to just to stop some little kid with no life who seems bent on destroying something people do for a hobby, but it is either make a system to stop him or manually stop him when he attacks.

Who says it has to be truely illegal for his ISP to deny him service?

won't work if the attacker knows this (and many do), and just cleans out his cookies before each attack.

aside from the 'disable javascript' trick, the script would need to access the person's router or modem in order to get the 'true' ip assigned to the internet account, not the users computer (which would have an internal address like 191.168.0.2 or similar). or it could go out to someplace like whatismyip.com, but that may return just the proxy. neither method is foolproof and likely to screw up legitimate posters.

and banning the ip is not the best method either, especially with ISP providers that cycle through a pool of ip-address for it's customers- many DSL providers do this. later on, someone who is not a spammer could lose access to BYOND just because they get assigned the attacker's last known ip address when connecting to the net.

...more than enough to stop most anyone...

except those determined to get in and cause trouble.
HAHAHAHAH LOL IF YOU HATE IT SO MUCH, THEN Y DO IT YOURSEFL?

Because he doesn't have access to the code to the forums. That one really deserves a big "duh".
