I know this is for more experienced members, But I'd like to join this discussion...

probably games where the person, or people publish their games, but they never follow through, they themselves never get on it...They never fix errors, or anything...mainly just games that look so plain ya just want to kill yourself...You all know what I mean, the games where the icons look like little smudges...and there is no such thing as order...it all just is spam!

That is BYOND's number 1 problem, I believe...That and the n00bs we have...that always always talk funny, and never shut up...

What's URW? Unless I should know, and then in that case I am requesting you to state it for those who don't. :D

Heres my two cents.
One of BYONDs problems is, in the beginning, it was geared towards adults or teens. Now it's geared towards the kids, most people on BYOND are 13-16. BYOND feels like the next myspace, ungh.

What exactly makes it "geared towards kids"? Most of the kids seem pretty clueless about what they're doing here while the older users are the only ones that actually do anything noteworthy.

All of them have a knack for creativity. The difference is who has a valuable skill.
what byond needs is ppl who know how to spell byond ...

but ppl do respond, but they r the sucky noob coders, who no1 wants but all the good coders are working on their own games that are private and take years to release.

if you have a problem with it, you start coding and help all the noob games that want to be the best. You'll get no credibility or experience, but have fun.
If you're to bewildered by learning then grow up some and learn your actions don't rely onsomone else todo it for you.
Fact, oh i'm to young to understand how to code and learn a new language or even somthing that may reproduce the engagement of my goul "to create a game",; Is all there.
I am going to create thisgame yet I don't know how to code.
Hello....it's simple you read day and night train yor mind create somthing that only you could achive because it's your own mind,
Being a creator: Fiction' oh I cant begain to tell you how well this has worked out for me since my last post me and well my coder' have progressed to about 78% of course of course.

Or would you rather post this., Well i'm a 3rd lvl coder now it's been 3 months ince my last post and i'm currently programming better hen any of my friends and am keping udate with new tools and demos that will ensure my stability with BYONDs language. Plus I hav made my Game' might I add it has been the most exciting time for me creating this, and it has everything I would of dreamt it would have. Thank you all for your help.

You're pretty cool kid you did ell your self- relyant and becoming a man sooner then even I would have thought.

Fix'd

Seriously, a few such as lummox work on byond related things, but most don't do much. Not that I mean that as an insult; byond isn't their responsibility.

When was the last time anything good was created on byond? Sure has been a while.
Illusionary Tactical Unit wrote:

Fixed. Sorry, just because rips are quite common on BYOND recently and the majority of recent submissions of games has been rips does not mean that it has been years since a good game has been created.
This too is an irritating BYOND problem: those who criticize as much as they can but not only do not take the time to research what they are criticizing and at that are not actually contributing in any way to solve anything.
Call me hypocritical for saying that, but it is another little BYOND problem.

Somehow I can't help but relate the rip problem to illegal immigrants. You can note the differences all you want, but I look at the similarities. In both scenarios there's a flux of things flowing into the community that the original community hate. But at the same time, as much as the two problems irritate the community, it isn't DESTROYING it. You can just ignore the problem or take steps to get around it.
At the same time, there's a large number of people who criticize illegal immigrants and rips, but don't actually look into the matter before making their commentary. They only hear about it, or have been slightly offended by it.
GrimmJore wrote:

What beyond needs is an program that may help others who are being ignored for an coder.

I didn't take the time to read all of the other responses, but one of the biggest problems is that people are asking for coders and not offering payment for it. A lot of people do not want to program someone else's entire game just so they can be "GM." Why do that when you can program your own game a be owner?

I don't know if I would agree or not when it comes to illegal immigrants(I'm pretty neutral and unknowledgable about the subject despite living in the U.S.) but I'd have to disagree about rips. At this point, it pretty much as really gotten out of hand. Despite there being a anime guild, unpublished is full to the brim with anime still. Admittedly there are a few new games there(most I try if they aren't RPs) but there's a severe lack of them compared to a few years ago.
I know being lazy isn't necessarily solving the problem, but I'd kind of just expect new games to arrive out of no where despite seeing all the "successful" fan games.
As for the unpublished section being full with anime games, is it okay/is as simple as just submitting them to the anime guild? I know I'd be more than happy to get them where they more than likely want to go anyway. But now that I think about it, it wouldn't solve much..It'd just probably be empty of games period rather than full of original games with no fangames in sight.
Perhaps have a ranking system for demos and libraries; you can put up anything you want, whether or not it is competent. I've seen some pretty weak stuff put out that I've spent more effort revising them and eventually giving up and going from scratch with maybe one or two insights.

I think a lot of people put too much faith into the random demos they get (and people post some messed up demos to begin with) and then think they are doing something wrong when they can't get it to work. Then they go to the Code Problems or Developer How-To after being led astray. A lot of people need to start using classes in their demos rather than redefining the same old junk or using hundreds of variables. That's not efficient and a waste of time and resources. And I've seen many poor codes which go on to teach newcomers bad habits (src vs. usr, etc.).

However, there are quite a few awesome demos and libraries which have already been officialized on the Demos/Libraries page, with even more out there (that list should be added to). Some people, such as myself, learn the basics of things by reverse engineering examples; I figured out a lot of the basics by doing so with Kunark's RPG demo which I worked off of; trial and error have been my most valuable tools in programming. "What happens if...?", "How could I do this?", "If this does that, then what happens when I change this around?"

I also think too many people half-arse an idea or make something wasteful and still list it in their published things. Half the entries it seems have been 'in the works' for years with not a hint of activity or even a broken link to the download page. Maybe we should have an annual "Clean Your Byond Portfolio Day" where we get rid of unused entries in the publications thing.

And then there are those who do not even make the attempt to try something, even if it probably won't work; they retreat to the Developer How-to or Code Problems with an idea but they don't realize that its important to at least try and come up with some way of doing it. Even if it isn't the most efficient, it can still be boiled down over time. Then we get the stereotypes of 'n00bs' we typically get when there's an inundation of basic questions.

Another thing is spelling, which coincides with the stereotypes; it seems as though its become more of a statistic than a stereotype. If spelling is weak for you, then there are plug-ins for Firefox without spell checkers, or make the effort to learn that "your"/"you're" and "they're"/"their"/"there" are not interchangeable. It reflects poorly on yourselves and the community; I realize that some people may have English as a second language or just be learning it, but I find this problem to be vastly more prevalent with those who speak English first and just do not care to learn how to spell. And make an effort, ye of little syntax, to make your sentences understandable. Capitalization, punctuation, and paragraphs are important; why would anyone want to plod through your words when they don't have to? Take some time and you'll get better responses.

Another thing is that people don't seem to get along and then we get all this "My game is being hacked" drama. Stop screwing around with people and just be a nice, contributing member of our community. Take the chip off your shoulder, get over yourself or get out; we don't care that you're <s>probably</s> some loser with nothing better to do that steal icons and code, and troll games. Coding takes too much time to spend worrying about this kind of stuff. It really isn't worth it to cause distress.

does not mean that it has been years since a good game has been created.

You went through your whole post without naming one. Not to sound rude or anything, but rambling on doesn't disprove an idea. Give me names of good games please.

are not actually contributing in any way to solve anything.

Didn't you read my post? I thought I made it quite clear that I'm of the opinion that BYOND is no ones responsibility. If people want to work on BYOND, or its problems, it should be voluntary. If someone wants to work
on it good for them. But frankly, I'm replying to a thread, and relating to the topic; no need to expect work from that.

Call me hypocritical for saying that, but it is another little BYOND problem.

I will. You're hypocritical because you complain about my lack of work but I don't see you fixing byond's problems.

-rip rambling-

No one is forced to play rips. If people made more entertaining games (Note that it depends on individual entertainment, why should your views be theirs?) then people would play those games. Really though, BYOND doesn't currently have any games (that are actively hosted) that supply more entertainment than the average Naruto pile of [don't use profanity]. Maybe REO, Castle, a random defenders game, etc. Supply fun for a little while, but who could play these games for long periods of time? Anyways, rips really don't have as much of a fanbase as Naruto GOA/WOTS. If you want to blame games for stealing players from the other, "better" games, why not just blame Anime games in general. All rips really do is clutter up space, and piss off people like you. Personally, I don't enjoy the rips, if I did I'd play them. And just to clarify, the point I'm trying to make is that BYOND games are so [profanity is bad] right now that rips are more appealing than almost every other game to the majority of the BYOND community. If you want to make it better, go ahead, no ones stopping you, nor is anyone making you.
Illusionary Tactical Unit wrote:

The BYOND Anime players came here with the intent of playing a good anime game. One that has good administration, is geared towards their preference (Naruto, DBZ or Bleach at the moment) and doesn't suck.

The players disagree with eachother on what's good and what's bad in this category, so they goto the rips, spreading themselves thinner.

Only because they'll pay for memberships.

I think BYOND's #1 problem is younger members. You don't really see the older members going through all the drama the 13-year-olds do; why not make an age-restriction for publishing games? If nobody under the age of 15 were allowed to publish a game without written parental consent, I believe BYOND would be a happy place indeed.
